PRESS RELEASE

Daniel Richter

ANTI AWAY

24/09 - 17/11/2010

Private view: 23rd September, Thursday, 6 - 9 pm

Regina gallery is pleased to announce a first solo Moscow exhibition of an internationally reputed artist Daniel Richter. Firstcomers will be glad not only to gain sight of the acclaimed artist’s paintings, but to meet him in person at the opening as well.

Richter stormed into the very midst of things that were taking place in the European art world in the middle of the 90s. His early work is an explosion of emotions and a rave of color. Using powerful and sharp brushstrokes, Daniel Richter creates complex ornaments that astound the viewers with their size and depth combined with the precision and thoroughness of individual details.

In the beginning of 2000s Daniel Richter moved from abstraction to more allegoric - but not less complex - figurative art. He built his artwork on large scale, exuberant, color saturated paintings with a strong social, and sometimes even political, subtext.

Daniel Richter manages to combine different painting styles by using cultural codes from the archives of art history, mass media and contemporary pop culture. The major characteristic of Richter’s artwork is his way of placing familiar images into a completely new, unusual and seemingly inappropriate context, often surreal and sinister. This explains why most of his works create associations with nightmares. They bring onto the viewer the feeling of danger, anxiety, emotional instability and violence. The characters of his works scare and attract at the same time, but it is them who have won the public’s heart – phosphorous skeletons, zombie-masked creatures, lonely rockers and demonic dogs.

Regina gallery provides its visitors with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves into Richter’s irrational world. The exhibition will show his famous works from the beginning of 2000s as well as some completely new paintings which will arrive in Moscow directly from the artist’s studio to be shown for he first time. Richter works in a variety of forms with equal success, from small scale paintings to large scale canvases, but the unique aura of his artwork stays unchanged.

Daniel Richter was born in 1962 in Eutin, Germany. He graduated from the Hamburg College of Fine Arts in Hamburg. His first solo exhibition took place in Contemporary Fine Arts gallery in Berlin. Since then his solo shows take place in the most prestigious museums and galleries around the world: The Saatchi Gallery (London), Tishman & Speyer Properties Messeturm (Frankfurt), Martin Gropius Bau (Berlin) and others. Daniel Richter is a participant of numerous group shows, professor at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste (Vienna), Universität der Künste (Berlin) и Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (Hamburg), creator of numerous theatrical and opera sceneries, prize winner of prestigious awards. Richter’s public and private collections include Centre Pompidou (Paris), Deutsche Bank (Frankfurt), Sammlung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Munich), The Saatchi Gallery (London) and others. Richter currently works and resides in Hamburg and Berlin.

The exhibition runs from 24 September till 17 November.
