Speech Elective Mrs. C. Brown

DEMONSTRATION SPEECH ASSIGNMENT

(How to or process speech with visual aid)

The general purpose of the demonstration speech is to inform. Therefore, it is necessary for you to design your speech so that your audience is motivated to listen. In addition to getting your audience’s attention for this speech, you will also need to create a reason for them to listen and fully satisfy that need once you have created it.

A process speech shows an audience how to do something. Basically, as an audience member we should be able to generally follow the steps you tell us and have at least a strong idea of how to repeat it on our own. You should select as your topic something you know how to do well. You will want to select a topic that is detailed enough to fill the time limit, but not so complex that your audience gets lost or loses interest.

Specific requirements for the presentation are as follows:

1. Speech should be 5 minutes long.

2. You should deliver the speech extemporaneously. You will be allowed to use your outline or note cards. Your speech may not be written out, and the note cards should contain an outline only.

3. Your speech should be well organized (probably chronologically). It should have a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Ideas should be grouped in three to five main points and be clear to your audience.

4. Use a meaningful visual aide to assist your audience in understanding your process. You may NOT use the whiteboard.

5. Focus your speech to create audience interest and involvement. Select a topic which reflects something unique about your interests or abilities. Pick something you know how to do well.

6. Attempt to be creative in some way whether it is how you design your visual aid, or the approach you take to your topic. Sometimes thinking of ways to "have fun" with your topic stimulates creative thoughts.

7. Prepare a typed outline of your speech using the format required.

8. Complete the top of the evaluation form and give it to your instructor before you begin your speech.

Rules for Food Topics:

A. Do not demonstrate how to make something that comes from a box. If it is not a unique, homemade recipe, then don’t do it.

B. You need to take digital pictures and make a PowerPoint slideshow for your speech. Do not include any words.

1. Make sure you include black slides for those moments when you talk about something else.

2. Must have finished product (If this is too difficult, then please choose a non-food topic)

3. Record a video and upload it to Youtube to be viewed in class.

Outline Due Friday November 6th
