JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Oral Health Project Coordinator

REPORTS TO: School Health Director

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Focuses on management of the oral health program; coordinates oral health education and outreach efforts through the Maternal Infant Health Outreach Workers (MIHOW) program; Performs school-based dental exams, cleanings and sealants utilizing portable equipment, provides continuing education trainings for primary care providers and staff; promotes oral health access through the local oral health advisory committee; continues development of the New River Health dental program; guides future funding efforts; works in a manner consistent with NRH mission, goals and standards of conduct and care.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

* Model and promote respectful communication between all internal and external

customers (i.e. patients, co-workers, etc.).

* Maintain strict confidentiality and compliance with HIP AA regulations.

* Dental Program Management:

* Develop, coordinate and manage oral health program to provide optimal dental care.

* Work in conjunction with MIHOW program to coordinate oral health education and

access to pregnant women.

* Provides continuing education training to staff.

* Community outreach program involvement through local oral health advisory committee.

* Lead funding efforts for oral health program.

* Order equipment and supplies.

* Attend staff meetings as scheduled.

* Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

* Dental Hygienist Duties:

* Perform oral prophylaxis.

* Review patient's medical and dental history.

* Examine the teeth and surrounding tissues for evidence of plaque and periodontal disease

ad chart all findings.

* Inspect the mouth and throat for evidence of disease.

* Perform routine x-rays and refer abnormalities to the dentist.

* Prepare the dental hygiene treatment plan and the sequence of appointments needed to

complete treatment.

* Perform deep subgingival scaling, root debridement, and curettage under local anesthesia.

* Polish teeth and apply stannous fluoride.

* Educate patients on the need for daily oral health and fluoride.

* Expose, develop, and process dental radiographs.

* Perform expanded functions as deemed necessary by clinical administrator. • Assist dentist in dental screenings and sealant applications.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Associate's or Bachelor's degree ftom an accredited dental hygiene program; Possession of a current, valid Dental Hygienist certification/license; Skills in community dentistry preferred.

Dentist

Diagnoses and treats diseases, injuries, and malformations of teeth and gums, and related oral structures. Examines patient to determine nature of condition, utilizing x-rays, dental instruments, and other diagnostic procedures. Cleans, fills, extracts, and replaces teeth, using rotary and hand instruments, dental appliances, medications, and surgical implements. Provides preventive dental services to patient, such as applications of fluoride and sealants to teeth, and education in oral and dental hygiene.

Dental Hvaienist

Dental hygienists work along with dentists to provide comprehensive dental care to patients. Their responsibilities include:

* Preparation of dental materials

* Dental charting

* Prevention and management of dental medical emergencies

* Taking and processing x-rays
