Dear Valued Patient,

We are very concerned about the safety and any potential health risks that might be associated with the materials used to restore teeth. Just recently, the Dental Board of California published the Dental Materials Fact Sheet in an effort to inform you of the possible risks involved with dental materials.

The most frequently used materials in dentistry are amalgam and composite resin for fillings. Also, porcelain, gold, nickel and chrome-cobalt are used for crowns.

Dental amalgam filling is composed mainly of mercury (43-54%), silver, tin and copper. Mercury is listed on the Proposition 65 list of known toxins and carcinogens. Small amounts of mercury may be released from fillings over time and can be detected in bodily fluids and expired air. There exists a diversity of scientific opinions regarding the safety of amalgam fillings although there is insufficient research evidence that suggests an increased health risk. Composite resins are the preferred alternative to amalgam. They have a long history of safety and biocompatibility. However, most insurance companies do not cover composite resin filling for posterior teeth.

Other dental materials of significant concern are nickel alloys found in predominantly base metal crowns and bridges (70+% nickel in alloy). Approximately 10% of the female population are alleged to be allergic to nickel. The preferred alternative to base metal (non-precious) crowns are noble and high noble (precious metal) crowns composed predominately of gold. Gold has a long history of biocompatibility and non-reactivity. Recent research also suggests less accumulation of bacteria along crowns with gold margins.

Our main concern is for the health of our patients. Unfortunately, most insurance companies are only concerned with the cost of dental treatment and therefore only cover the least expensive materials. We feel that the extra cost of the better material greatly outweigh the potential long term risks.

Please do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ron Noriesta
