Ski Club

Steamboat, Colorado Ski Trip March 20-27, 2016This trip was planned over the Spring Break for Duval and St. Johns county. Out of a total of 19 skiers & snowboarders, we had 6 “kids”, aged 13 to 20, and several “kids” in their late seventies. It was a great mix of people, ages and backgrounds. We had been scheduled for a 5:30 am departure, but Sports America was able to change us to a direct flight on Southwest, leaving at 9am. Yay! We did have a 3 hour bus ride from Denver to Steamboat, but it passed quickly with a movie and the knowledge that there had just been a foot of powder dumped 2 days before. The views coming into the mountains were incredible and, considering it was the last week in March, everything was amazingly covered in snow! When we arrived, we found out the rental shop was going to be open late, so those who needed rentals headed over and we all met up at the Welcome Party sponsored by Wyndam Resorts. While we enjoyed pizza, veggie, meat and cheese platters, and an assortment of our favorite beverages, a mountain host provided an excellent overview of the mountain and the town. We were spread over 3 condos, including Dulaney and La Casa. The accommodations were wonderful with a short walk or ride to the Gondola. The skiing conditions, as described by many of the participants, were the best they’d ever experienced. The first few days were fairly warm, with typical spring conditions, but by the third day, there was new powder everywhere. It snowed on and off (about 2 feet) the rest of the week, with Denver airport shut down mid-week due to the “blizzard”! Most of the group met up with the Clearwater Ski Club at the Truffled Pig restaurant Monday night. We had a great time and they were such a nice group! There were several other fun happy hours and dining events, at Slopeside Grill, The Laundry, Café Diva and Sally’s condo. Several ventured off of the mountain to Downtown Steamboat Springs, which is full of great restaurants and shops. We had our group dinner at Mahogany Brew Pub & Restaurant on Wednesday night. This was described by some of the participants as the best dining experience in many years of ski club trip dinners. Louise, our Assistant Trip Leader, hit the jackpot in picking this spot. On Thursday several members took a day off and went by bus to the Strawberry Park Hot Springs. It was an incredible place with multiple natural spring rock pools cut into the mountainside. We were extremely proud of our “kids” who swam across the ice cold river, rolled in the snow and swam back, especially 13 year old Ellie! We had a group lunch on Friday at the top of the Gondola. Phil’s extra Stouffers Lasagna was the spark behind our “farewell” Italian dinner on Saturday. Phil, with many helpers, created an Italian meal to be remembered. And everyone got an Easter Basket! We really enjoyed each other and can’t wait to do it again! ................
