MCV4U The Derivatives of y = sin x and y = cos x

The derivatives of trigonometric functions are quite interesting. While the derivations using the limit definition are beyond the scope of this course, the graphs of their derivatives are helpful.

Graphs of y = sin x and y = cos x Derivatives of y = sin x and y = cos x

Derivatives of Sinusoidal Functions: [pic] and [pic] .

Example: Determine the derivative of each function. Note that trigonometric functions are composite functions!

a) [pic] b) [pic] c) [pic]

d) [pic] e) [pic]

Example: Determine the equation of the tangent to the graph of [pic]at [pic].

Assignment:

1. Determine the derivative of each of the following:

a) [pic] b) [pic] c) [pic] d) [pic]

e) [pic] f) [pic] g) [pic] h) [pic]

i) [pic] j) [pic]

2. Determine the equation of the tangent to the graph of [pic]at [pic].
