Chapter members will choose their own projects and the number of projects they are willing to do.? The first component is similar to Collaborative Connections in that chapters record on a new tally sheet the group projects in which they are participating and submit to the Educational Excellence Committee. Hours will be documented based upon the time spent on the project(s) and the number of students/people impacted by the project(s). Secondly, chapters are encouraged to prepare press releases with a photo of their project(s) and distribute them to the local media and to dkgazstate@ for distribution to our state media.? Rationale:?Service to our communities has been a hallmark of DKG members throughout our history. Chapters that work together on group activities energize their members and create a synergy that incorporates collaboration, sharing and a sense of belonging. This State Project has the potential to build stronger chapters and market the value and honor of DKG membership. For more information, contact Saroj Jagernauth, Alpha Iota.?GROUP PROJECT IDEAS & ADDITIONAL NFORMATIONThe following is a compilation of suggestions of projects that were done by many chapters, and researched by members of the Expansion & Renewal Committee. Partner with a specific school and class. You can write one month and the children the following, alternating through the school year. This can be coordinated to tie in with the year’s curriculum as long as someone from your group works on a plan for this with the teacher. It is helpful to have someone collecting the letters and delivering them to the school one month and doing the opposite the following month. Depending on the children’s ages, printing a letter rather than using cursive may be preferred. You may even arrange for an end-of-year classroom visit by your group so the pen pals may meet.Reading Buddies/Friends – Have your group partner with a particular school and grade level to become Reading Buddies or Friends depending on the children’s grade level. With first graders, your group can read to the children. If the children are older, you may want to provide a book one month and return the following month to discuss the book. Notes for a Holiday – Have your group meet to make and write Valentine to children in a hospital. This can be adjusted to some other holidays, too. Tau: Jared Boxes The chapter’s service project is the filling of clear plastic shoe boxes with various items children would enjoy for an extended stay in the hospital, either for surgery, illness or cancer treatments. They are called Jared Boxes, and they go to the Children's Center at Flagstaff Medical Center. The boxes are divided into 3 - 4 groups: infants, 6-9 year olds, 10-12 year olds and young teens and are filled with appropriate items purchased by the members. They spend one meeting filling and sealing the boxes and then one of their members delivers them. This year they provided 50 boxes. Raise & donate funds to a local Red CrossSend care packages to soldiers overseas. Collect clothes/toiletries for abused women. Tutor students after school. Matilda Campbell, a graduate of the program, spoke about the goals, requirements and successes of the program, which was started in1986. Matilda served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and became a coordinator for the program that she credits for her successful life. The chapter also donated needed items to the program.Iota: Decorating back packs :The chapter had a work party and created festive additions to backpacks that were then donated to schools students that could not afford to get their own. Kappa: Bags of LoveEach October the members assemble items needed for children who are being placed into foster care. CPS provided them with a list of necessary items, and they always add some special extras for the children. The first year they actually filled the bags (which we also made out of heavy cloth as some of the children were forced to move with plastic garbage bags) and labeled them with gender and size, but last year they provided all the "ingredients" and the bags so that the DES could just place the items on their shelves and fill the bags as necessary when a child was in need.Lambda: Adopt a School:The chapter has adopted Roberts/Naylor, a K-8 TUSD school. The project is currently in its third year. Some of the things the members have done are teach music to the early grades, assist in the classroom, provide goodies in the teachers’ lounge, raised money for Thanksgiving dinners for school families, gather school supplies and boxes of tissues and provide tax credit money to the school. Last year the chapter donated over seven hundred volunteer hours to the school. Nu: Prospective Member Brunch :The chapter held a brunch for prospective members to learn about Delta Kappa Gamma. Attendees watched a presentation, received a folder of information, were given a DKG mug of school supplies, were entered into a monthly drawing for gift cards and were invited to join the chapter. They had 23 attend and three joined the chapter. Xi: School Volunteering Several chapter members got finger printed to volunteer, they arranged a time with the elementary school they selected, and each volunteer took on one of the many tasks that were available. Volunteers work in the library and with individual students. Rho: Donated Items to a Phoenix K-8 School The chapter had an administrator from Mountain View School to speak about the school and the population it serves. As a result, they collected school supplies for the school. We collect itemsat each meeting and deliver them to the school. So far they have delivered several cases of copy paper, tissues, hand sanitizer, bandages, pencils, socks, underwear and eyeglass repair kits. Omega: SEE Support Supporting Early-career Educators, SEE, is an ongoing project with the chapter. Chapter members, on different occasions, have signed up to bring pencils, markers, stickers, notebooks, books, activities and other schoolsupplies to be given to early career educators. They are either available at meetings where early educators are invited and have the opportunity to choose supplies, or the supplies are given directly to the teachers. The chapter includes information about DKG in the materials with a contact phone number.Alpha Epsilon: Feed My Starving Children One of the projects the chapter has supported for several years is called "Feed My Starving Children," a Christian nonprofit organization. Chapter members (and family members) participated in a packing event in Tempe to prepare nutritionally complete meals for starving, malnourished and hungry people in nearly 70 countries. These dry meals, costing less than a quarter each to make, are later prepared with milk or potable water. The members went to different stations where each person has a specific task, to prepare and package these meals. In 2014, Alpha Epsilon members helped pack 29 cartons, which contained a total of 6,264 meals to feed 17 children for a year. The cost for those meals (which is 100% donor funded) was $1,378.08. Alpha Epsilon is proud to be a part of this program. Alpha Rho: Supplies for Teachers Each year the teachers introduce DKG to the schools’ teachers with bags of teaching supplies. They also provided each principal with a wreath festooned with various classroom items to be given to a teacher in her third year. Alpha Chi: Penny’s Panties The chapter donates new panties and underwear to the elementary and middle school nurses to have on hand should a student have an accident.“Soles For Souls” Groups can collect gently used tennis shoes and donate to Any organization that works with Children – Boys & Girls Club etc.Send greeting cards To soldiers serving overseas/ Veteran’s Hospital or Nursing Homes.Collect unused makeup and perfume To donate to a center for abused women – Eve’s Place, UMOM, etc.Bed-time Bags for foster childrenNew Life Center – stuffed animals, blanket, book, toothbrush, toothpaste, T-shirts, a little activity book.Created: October 2019 ................
