ET31-BD Radio Controlled Clock with Calendar/Time II Option

The unit works on receiving the time radio signal. The time signal is generated by the US Atomic Clock which is located in Colorado. The Atomic Clock is operated by the US Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology. To enhance good reception, avoid placing the unit near television sets, metal surfaces, computers or electric devices as these pieces of equipment will interfere with the reception of the radio signal.

-Display options: normal time with calendar or normal time with time II

-Shows time in hours, minutes, and seconds

-Shows calendar (month, date, day of week) or time II (dual time mode)

-Time II option is useful when frequent time referral to another time zone within the US is needed.

-For normal time and time II option, the running seconds will be synchronized automatically if radio reception is successful.

-Maximum digit height 47mm (approx 2”) with superb contrast

-12/24 HR display format (user selectable)

-Daily alarm

-Mounted on wall or standing on desktop

Battery Replacement

The unit uses 2 AAA batteries (or equivalent), with the battery compartment at the back of the unit. Open the battery cover and insert the batteries by following the polarity marked. Replace both batteries with new ones when the display becomes dim.

The display options

The unit can be set to different display options at the initialization stage. Once the display option is fixed, it should not be changed at a later stage. Otherwise, the unit may display incorrect time or date. Please refer to the next section “initialization of the unit” for more details.

The display options are:

-time and calendar: upper display showing normal time and lower display showing calendar.

-normal time and time II: impressive visual effect is achieved by synchronizing the running seconds of the two displays. Once radio signal reception is successful, the unit will synchronize the seconds automatically.

Usage 1- upper display is set to home time and lower display set to a different time zone within US. It is useful when frequent referrals between the two time zones is needed.

Eg. Regional offices in different time zones within US.

Relatives/friends lived in another area (of different time zone) within US

Usage 2- Standard and military time display with the upper set to AM/PM format and the lower set to 24HR format.

Initialization of the unit

Please select the appropriate time zone before radio reception starts. If the time zones are selected after reception stopped (the radio singal mark will display three solid curves), the time, date, time II will not be changed to the correct time zone and the unit will display incorrect time for your area. Please refer to the appendix for the time zone setting of the various areas of the US.

Setting the time zone of the upper display (the normal time)

To set the time zone of the upper display, place the SET ENABLE switch to “TIME” position. Press the SET button once to enter the Time Zone Selection Mode. The upper LCD will show the tiem zone selected previously (it will show “- 0 HR” if no time zone is selected before). Select the appropriate time zone by pushing the up button. After setting the appropriate time zone, press the SET button give times to end the setting mode.

Setting the time zone of the lower display (calendar/time II)

To set the time zone of the lower display, place the SET ENABLE switch to “TIME II/CAL” position and then place the TIME II/CAL switch to “TIME II” position.

1. If the unit is used for normal time and calendar, set the time zone of the lower display to the same value as the upper display.

2. If the unit is used for normal time and time II, set the time zone of the lower display to another time zone within the US.

3. If the unit is used for standard time and military time, set the time zone of the lower display to the same value as the upper display. Please set the lower display to 24HR display format after reception is completed.

The setting procedures will be the same as setting the upper display. After setting the appropriate time zones, place the SET ENABLE switch to the ‘TIME’ position and choose the display option by:

1. Place the TIME II/CAL switch to “CAL” position, if normal time and calendar display is desired.

IMPORTANT NOTE: AFTER RADIO SIGNAL IS SUCCESSFULLY RECEIVED, THE TIME II/CAL SWITCH CANNOT BE CHANGED TO ALTER THE DISPLAY OPTION. OTHERWISE THE LOWER DISPLAY WILL SHOW INCORRECT TIME / DATE.

Receiving the time radio signal

The unit will search for time radio signals automatically after batteries are installed. The radio signal mark on the right of the upper display will start pulsing to show the receiving status. If time signal is received, synchronization will take 3-10 minutes and the unit will show the received time.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

If the up button is pressed during radio signal reception to set the 12/24 HR display format, hour, minute, second, year, month, date or alarm time (with the exception of time zone setting), radio signal reception will be terminated immediately. To re-start the radio signal reception manually, please press the TEST button once.

Please follow the procedure in the next section to set the 12/24 HR display.

Setting the time and calendar/time II manually

Since the unit works on receiving the time signal, there may be locations where the signal is very weak and cannot be properly received. Under such conditions:

1. radio signal may be decoded improperly and one of the upper or lower displays may not be changing to the correct time/date or,

2. radio signal reception is failed and the radio signal mark will show a triangle with no waves coming off of it. Both displays will not be changed to correct the time/date

Under both conditions, try to rotate the unit or place it in another location to achieve better reception. You may re-start reception manually by pressing the TEST button. If finally, the radio signal cannot be received, normal time and calendar/time II should be set manually.
