I'd like to welcome you to our workshop presentation entitled Mobile Me !

I am Shawn Wright and I am webmaster of the Idaho Training Clearinghouse and I am here this morning with Dr. Cari Murphy - a long time colleague and friend.

Dr. Murphy will jump in and tell you a bit more about her self - her tech interests and our Idaho Training Clearinghouse project and I want to tell you a bit about the Mobile Me workshop and how we became interested in the topic.

First off, I am a tech junkie - I love all things tech pure and simple.

I started in computing in the early 1980's with a TI 994a and graduated

Slide 3

to a Commodore 64

Slide 4

- then to a Commodore Amiga

Slide 5

then PC's - 286- 386-486-

Pentium 1 - Pentium 2 - Pentium 3 - Pentium 4 - Dual Core - Quad core -

Linux , Macs and more.

Are these pictures fond memories or do they strike fear in your hearts ?

It dawned on me that some of you might not be old enough to remember a "286" PC.

Slide 6

[pic]

I had a tablet PC way before tablets were ever considered cool.( circa 2007 - Windows XP tablet )

I was a technology trainer for the U of I for 7 years and trained hundreds of teachers in using technology in teaching - and for the past 8 years I've been the webmaster and an Instructional systems designer for the Idaho Training Clearinghouse.

And now - here I am - mobile me - as mobile in computing and training as one could ever hope to be and I am here to enlighten you and help you grasp some of the many possibilities of using mobile technology as a tool in organizing your life.

Along the way - as I learned about and began to utilize the technologies you'll see and experiment with today - I've had the pleasure of working with a colleague that has shared the enthusiasm of tech potential and possibilities and has herself become a self proclaimed "geek" - and I as mentioned - she is a good friend and I am pleased to be working with her - this is Dr. Cari Murphy and I ‘ll let her tell you a bit more about herself and how she became a Mobileme.

Cari Murphy

I've been with the Idaho Training Clearinghouse and worked with Shawn since 2001. Our project is house at University of Idaho's Center on Disabilities and Human Development (Idaho's UCEDD) and is funded via a contract with the Idaho State Department of Education, Division of Special Education. The ITC, as we call it, is a website designed to link school professionals and parents with special education training opportunities and resources across the state. Please visit our website to find out more.

I've always had liking and fascination with tech gadgets and tools. I enjoy the sophistication of technology and the challenge of learning new tools and integrating them into my life, which is the epitome of pursuing "life long learning" as it's never ending - there's always something new. A testament to that…we gave this presentation to our University employees in March of this year, and now 8 months later changes already occurred with many of the tools.

I am very fortunate to be able to work with Shawn who keeps me on my toes with the latest and greatest in tech tools.

Slide 8

[pic]

One of the tools we'll review toward the end of the presentation is an online board called Wallwisher.  So I would like to start us off with this open concept as a place that you can post comments throughout the presentation.

So, be brave, and go to the URL:

And to get you going, post a list of the mobile device you use (you'll see my post there as an example)

Slide 9

[pic]

A quick introduction to the hardware we are going be talking about today

The presentation itself was developed on a MacBook Pro in PowerPoint.

It could just as easily been developed in the cloud ( more on that later ) on a tablet and shown to you today from the tablet connected to the this portable projector ( interesting to note this could be done all on battery power ) or actually from the projector itself with the PowerPoint having been stored on an SD card.

We will be demonstrating "apps" available on iPads, Android tablets and phones, and we'll access the cloud on a netbook running Linux Ubuntu .

At this time I'd also like to mention Chromebooks - the netbook computers that run the Google OS - and I may have a bit of time at the end of the presentation to show you Google OS in action.

Slide 10

[pic]

Utilizing these mobile devices - we are going to talk about 7 creative ways to enhance your digital lifestyle and hopefully introduce you to some creative technology applications and devices that will leave you excited and wanting to learn more about this fun and ever changing technology field.

We're going to start with the "no-brainer" topic of document creation - I say no brainer because if you use one these devices you are undoubtedly familiar with e-mail , or reading PDF files or Word documents and you might be interested to know that with the right "app"- you can easily create documents on these devices and save and share them with your family, friends, and colleagues.

Speaking of saving and storing documents - we're going to carefully cover the concept of the "cloud" and why it's really beneficial to understand and utilize this technology in the Mobile Me environment .

We'll spend some time learning how to manage time and schedules and how to make cool lists and notes ( Cari and I are both avid fans of list apps ) and we'll talk a bit about organizing digital resources both in the cloud and on the devices as well.

Finally we'll cover how you can access your home or work desktop PC from a mobile device and how you can attend and conduct online meetings right from your tablet or phone.

This discussion will also include collaborative whiteboard apps.

We'll finish the session hearing from you - perhaps you are using an app that you love and can tell us a bit about and we'll try to add to our ever growing list.

As a "bonus" for attending the session - you'll get to see what we are calling "bonus" rounds - a peek at 4 mobile hardware devices you may not be familiar with and are sure to be intrigued by. We'll demonstrate how they can be used in the Mobile Me environment and how you can impress your friends as a techy geek for sure.

Slide 11

[pic]

Right at the introduction - I gave you a brief look at the actual hardware devices we are going to discuss today and we are going to look at some unique apps that run on computers, iPads, Android tablets and maybe most interesting all of the above.

That's right - we'll be showing you apps that run on any or all of the devices and we'll point out how handy this can really be.

Slide 12

[pic]

So- are you excited ?

Already overwhelmed?

No worries - let's have fun exploring these concepts and we'll share with you not only what we know - but how we came to know about it and why. Finally we'll even explain why we use it !

Let's start with document creation and that leads us to what might end up being the most discussed topic of the session - and that would be Windows 8.

Slide 13

[pic]

I am running a fun computer for today's presentation - this is a new MacBook Pro and it has a software application on it called Parallels that allows me to also run a Windows 8 operating system on it. This is very handy of course for testing our websites and online courses for compatibility and accessibility , not to mention that there are certain Windows software applications that simply do not run on a Mac that we use regularly.

When I first booted Windows 8 and saw the new interface that I am sure you've probably heard about - I noticed right away there was a tab that linked right to my SkyDrive.

I thought that was fascinating and I had a pretty good idea why Microsoft would make that tab so obvious - so I clicked it and found out I was right-

Here was a way to get me to continue using Microsoft office tools I had been using for so many years online - I could create and edit and store "docs" right here in my SkyDrive.

AT THIS POINT - demonstrate SkyDrive access via:

Windows 8 Firefox

Mac Safari

iPad Chrome ( editable )

Acer - SkyDrive app and this opens directly into Kingsoft

Linux

Kingsoft Phone

Slide 14

[pic]

This was the old Windows 7 login screen for SkyDrive.

Slide 15

[pic]

This is the new look "tabbed" Metro interface in Windows 8 and I can select a document from a folder and show you several ways to edit and save this document.

It's interesting to think how over the years - I for one - have been very reliant on the Windows operating system - beginning from my earliest adoption of DOS to Windows 3.1 on a 486 - to Win 95 as my OS to train teachers on to Win 98 - a really bad OS in Windows Millennium then a hugely successful adoption of Windows XP - to a not so great Windows Vista - to a widely adopted Windows 7 - the question seems to be - will Windows 8 be adopted and early on the business world is is balking because the OS is pushing its' tablet adoption - that is - the Surface and other tablet makers-

Slide 16

[pic]

Once we are logged into Skydrive - we have options to edit our files and the Word App online editing option is available to us.

This is a nice feature and hopefully one Microsoft will continue to support for free.

If I download a document on my tablet from my Skydrive - I am presented with an interesting option that I would now like to discuss and demo -

I have installed FREE Microsoft editing app on phone and tablet called Kingsoft Office.

As I begin to download a document from my Skydrive - my phone and tablet automatically ask me if I want to edit the document in Kingsoft. If I choose to open - I'll have some nice cloud options available to me in Kingsoft as well.

In this particular demo- I'll choose a file from SkyDrive and save back to Google Drive all thru Kingsoft.

Slide 17

[pic]

In this example we'll upload a document to my Google drive right from my tablet and phone.

We'll also explore an application called Cloud Share that is exclusive to Kingsoft users but might be a very useful tool on a small business team.

Slide 18

[pic]

So to this point we have learned:

About Cloud drives called SkyDrive and Google Drive

Cloud document editing thru Microsoft Word "app"

Document editing thru a FREE office suite editing app called Kingsoft

Access to documents storage and editing is available on across all hardware devices as demonstrated including the Mac OS and Windows 8 , the Android tablet, the Android phone and the iPad.

Slide 19

[pic]

So - I'll bet you'd like to be able to edit a Word document in the cloud using your iPad too !

Yes, you can use the Apple's Pages app for sure - but if you just want to make some quick edits and save right back to the cloud drives Box, Dropbox or Google drive - you are good to go with Cloud On.

Slide 20

[pic]

Dropbox has become a very popular cloud drive and is one I use personally and on the job.

Dropbox apps are readily available on all devices and this makes accessing docs and files very easy.

Let's take a brief look at Dropbox as an app on all devices.

Start with Mac

View on Windows

View on Android tablet

View on iPad

Slide 21

[pic]

Another great cloud drive is

It too has become quite popular - offers a large amount of free storage space and has some nifty apps that will keep you happy in the busy tech cloud.

Let's review live and take a quick look at some of its excellent features.

Slide 22

[pic]

Let's take a quick look at the Amazon Cloud Drive.

You get 5 GB storage here and you can see the app is organized very much like Skydrive with pre-built folders for docs, pics, audio/video files etc.

It's quick and easy to access from any device

Slide 23

[pic]

Let's take a quick look at the Ubuntu One app.

You get 5 GB storage here as well and you can choose which folder(s) you want to sync up.

I chose a folder called Ubuntu stuff and if I save a doc in Ubuntu stuff it will sync itself right to this cloud drive.

Slide 24

[pic]

VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand Portable Scanner

Now available at Amazon for $58.00

Scan to JPG - Convert with OCR - edit away with all document editing apps and store it and share it

Slide 25

[pic]

How handy would it be to take a picture of a document and have it save as a PDF file and then have it be available to you in the cloud ?

Android Handy scanner and iPad scan to PDF accomplish just that .

Slide 26

[pic]

While we are looking at the iPad - there are some neat apps that allow you get busy with docs editing and creating right away -

You can use your camera to create PDF files -

You can hop right into Google Docs from the iPad-

You can speak in some text in a remarkably accurate fashion-

You can use the excellent Pages word processor.

With Google Calendar, it's easy to keep track of life's important events all in one place.

1. Share your schedule

Let your co-workers, family, and friends see your calendar, and view schedules that others have shared with you. When you know when everyone is free or busy, scheduling is a snap.

Show me how

2. Get your calendar on the go

With two-way syncing to your mobile phone's built-in calendar or a mobile version of Google Calendar that's made for the small screen, you can access your calendar while you're away from your desk.

Show me how

3. Never forget another event again

Customizable reminders help you stay on schedule. You can choose to be notified by email or get a text message sent right to your mobile phone.

Show me how

4. Send invitations and track RSVPs

Invite other people to events on your calendar. Guests can RSVP to your events by email or via Google Calendar.

Show me how

5. Sync with your desktop applications

Access your calendar however and whenever you want by syncing events with Microsoft Outlook, Apple iCal and Mozilla Sunbird.

Show me how

6. Work offline

Know where you're supposed to be even when you don't have internet access. With offline access, you can view a read-only version of your calendar no matter where you are.

Slide 43

This is an example of what a Doodle invitation looks like when after you click it and then begin to enter your availability. You can switch between table view (shown) or calendar view. You simply check your availability and click Save.

Slide 46

[pic]

Then with a free account you can create a personalized link that you can provide to others for them to use to request a meeting with you. Because your Doodle account is synced with your personal calendar, others will see when you are available and then only send a request for your free times.

Let's practice. Go to the link shown to access my MeetMe page and send me a request for meeting with me.

[pic]

Google tasks lets you manage your to-do list while you're on the go. You can create lists of things you need to get done and check off tasks as they're completed. Just click and type to add new tasks, set due dates or add notes, and (most satisfyingly) check them off as you're done. Your task list stays up to date no matter how you access it. It's a simple list that's with you everywhere you go.

If you have a supported device, just go to in your phone's web browser to access Tasks.

Slide 49
