Detailed Lesson Plan PreparationElementary EducationName: Megan SwearingenTitle: Phonological Awareness with CVC wordsGrade: Kindergarten Concept/Topic: Phonics/ELATime Needed: 30 minNote: A detailed lesson plan is specific enough for another teacher to read and teach effectively. There should not be any question regarding what to do or how to do it.Backward Design Approach: Where are you going with your students?Identify Desired Results/Learning Outcome/Essential Question/Objective: Students will be able to identify the beginning, middle, and end sounds on a bulletin board puzzle with 70% accuracy.Indiana State Standards: k.RF.3.4Assessment Plan: Informative assessment: It will be done by asking them each sound with the cards during the lesson. Then, we will let them split into centers, where they will be able to work by themselves or together. There will be one teacher per center, so we can observe and assist each student. Meeting the student where they are:Prior Knowledge/Connections (how will you stimulate prior knowledge?): Review sounds that we will use for the assignment, by pulling a letter and asking them what sound does it make. Lesson Introduction/Hook (anticipatory set): We will introduce students with the idea of identifying letters by their sounds. We will also introduce the bulletin board and let them know that we will be playing an interactive game with it. Heart of the Lesson/Learning PlanLesson Development (this is step by step what you are teaching…should be like a recipe): We will start out by presenting different picture cards (cvc words) and then showing them how to identify and point out to the first letter sound. Then, we will talk about the middle sound, and explain that is the sound we hear in between. We will show the same picture card and ask for them to listen carefully to the sounds, and then show them what the middle sound is. For example: We will hold a picture of a van and tell them to listen carefully to my words. I will break down the word like: V-A-N, and then show them the middle sound. Finally, we will talk about the ending sound, explain to them how to be careful with the last sound and to break it down if they want to double check. We will use the same picture card, but this time we will focus on the last sound. After that, we will show them the ending sound.Guided practice (how will the students practice in the classroom to show you they are competent to do the task on their own): -Students will work on a bulletin board. They will be required to put the letters with the images in order. They will have to use their phonic skills by making sure that the word with the image is in order. -Students will work on a phonic mat, where they will have to write the first, middle, and last sound of the word. The teacher will be there to assist them.Specific Questioning : What sound do you hear in the beginning/middle/end of the word? What new words did you learn? Is the any sound you struggled with? Why is it important for you to learn the letter sounds?New Vocabulary: IdentifySoundsCVC wordsConcluding the Lesson/Closure/Debriefing: After we are done with the aforementioned activities, we will call their attention back and ask them to sit back on the table. Then, we will talk about how this is essential for their learning, and how this will help them read for their future lessons. We will also have a small discussion in which we will let the students discuss in pairs what they learned and what their favorite activity was. Finally, we will let a few of them share out loud and finalize it by stating that if they still have struggles with it, to come to us so we can help them deeply.
