8.09 Study Questions

1. Paraphrase the following sentence from the sixth paragraph on page one: “[Economic experts] fear that we are in the midst of not a cyclical downturn but a structural shift, one that poses huge new challenges to the average American job, pressures the average American wage and endangers the average American Dream.” (Consult Guidelines for Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing if you need to review paraphrasing techniques.)

     

2. In the section titled “Going Global” on page one, Zakaria discusses two elements shared by all successful corporations operating in the global economy. Briefly summarize the main points he makes about each of these two elements.

     

3. In the video clip linked on page one of the article, former President Bill Clinton discusses ways that globalization and interdependence differ. Using Clinton’s comments to guide you, explain the difference in these two terms.

     

4. On page two, describe the effect the structure of paragraph three’s opening sentence creates: “And yet something feels different this time.”

     

5. Define the terms “basket-case economies” and “banana republics” that appear in paragraph three, page two, and include the etymology of each term as well. If you need help, consult The Cambridge Dictionary Online and the Online Etymology Dictionary. (Note: The etymology of the first term will be for “basket case”)

     

6. Several paragraphs on page two contain direct and indirect quotes from experts as well as statistics. Quote one sentence containing a direct or indirect quote or a statistic that you think is especially effective, and explain the reason for your choice.

     

7. In the section subtitled “Recapturing the Dream” that begins on page three and continues into page four, Zakaria offers four suggestions for improvement. Write a one sentence summary of each of the four sections; then explain which of the four suggestions you believe would create the most significant improvements. Include specific reasons to support your opinion.

     

8. In paragraph three on page three, Zakaria uses parallel structure as he lists--but does not answer--three questions in a row, and then concludes this paragraph with a question. What effects do the multiple questions and parallel structure create?

     

9. As you read, view the hyperlinked segments entitled “See 10 perfect jobs for the recession” (page two) and “See how the future of work is changing” (page three). Summarize the information you learn from these segments, and discuss how it applies to one or more careers you are considering pursuing in the future.

     

10. Consider the article as a whole and describe Zakaria’s point of view, or his purpose, for writing the article. Include at least one quote from the article that you believe is particularly effective, and explain the reason for your choice.
