Welcome to West Valley Light Opera Association's

First Production of its 42nd Season

If you enjoy the community theater productions you have seen in this theater, tell your friends and pick up the fliers/brochures/cards in the lobby. There are holders on the walls by the side entrance for both West Valley Light Opera and Saratoga Drama Group which contain information on upcoming productions, cards to place your name on their mailing lists and order forms for tickets to their future productions. Please feel free to take them and use them for future reference. It is only through your support that we are able to bring you such "professional" productions at such a reasonable price.

Thank you for your continued support.

We invite you to become a subscriber to our upcoming season with a Special Offer! If you purchased an individual ticket to this production, we offer you the opportunity to turn in your ticket stub for a credit on a subscription for our 2006-2007 season. To take advantage of this offer, obtain a blue Subscription Form from the lobby, complete the form, attach your ticket stub which shows the performance date and assigned seat and remit it with a stamped, self-addressed envelope along with your check or credit card number for the balance of the subscription. A Note from the Director

Elton John and Tim Rice's AIDA begins with the future Pharoah of Egypt telling us "every story is a love story", whether it is "new or ancient ... " and that couldn't be more true in the story that will literally and figuratively unfold on our stage tonight. Based on Verdi's most famous opera, AIDA concerns itself with the forbidden love of a man and a woman but also the love of power, greed, lust, fame and fortune. And that's where AIDA starts.

Transporting us from current day to ancient Egypt, we are told of the fame and fortune Egypt will amass by conquering the world. When enslaved Princess of Nubia, Aida, develops a friendship with the Egyptian Captain that captured her, Radames, all goes awry. Not only are Aida and Radames of different racial backgrounds and stations in life, but their countries are at war. In addition he doesn't even know that he's being groomed to be the next pharaoh.

As with many of the great operas of the last 200+ years, the story concentrates more on the love story than it does on the other major rones it contains. If watched with a scrutinizing eye, I believe AIDA can speak to us on many levels, both political and emotional. A racial divide, a world power vying to dominate, and the leaders of a country struggling to rise to power, are all issues that have plagued our world for centuries. While telling its beautiful love story through Elton John's rock-opera motif the story provides us a glimpse of a repressed people, their beauty and the corruption of a major world power. These are all very realistic tones that we can all relate to and that is how our production comes to you today, with an emphasis on the natural and realistic, so that you have an emotional, vested interest in our characters. And as our story and our set literally unfold toward you, hopefully you will become enveloped by the embracing nature of our production, raise an eyebrow at issues close to home, and yes, even bounce a leg at your seat. After all, it IS Elton John. Enjoy!
