Credit Unions adhere to the 7 Cooperative principles (). Credit Unions have voluntary and open membership, democratic operations and member participation.Appointed leaders of the Credit Union regulatory body (NCUA) should hold fast to these same standards that the Credit Unions themselves abide by. Understanding the unique challenges and needs of a Cooperative business must be a key motivator for our governing leaders.President Obama, select NCUA leaders who share and enforce the Credit Union Cooperative vision.2Headline: 99Body: 798WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:Appoint to the NCUA Board some leaders who really GET that credit unions are NOT the same as banks!A cooperative is born when a community of owners decides, “let’s work together on a common goal.” A regulator that oversees that community should understand what that common goal is, what values that community shares. Since credit unions are cooperatives, anyone running the NCUA should be keenly aware of what it means to be a cooperative, what values drive the organization. And if they are to govern well, they need to share a belief in the advantage of those values. The way credit unions are regulated today, these values are largely ignored. Owners can’t participate, the process isn’t transparent, and there is a decided lack of cooperation of any kind. We believe the NCUA needs leaders that understand what makes credit unions unique, and that 90 million member-owners shouldn’t be ignored.3Headline: 103 or 90Body: 795WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:Member-owned institutions belong to the members. Keep NCUA Board vacancies for Credit Unions, not banks-or-Credit Unions didn’t need bailouts. Keep NCUA Board vacancies for Credit Unions, not banksCredit Unions are built by their members; members who fund and direct their credit unions through elections of leaders, allowing individual interests to align with community needs. There are 7 cooperative principles at the heart of the philosophy. Without NCUA board members who respect and understand these principles; the credit union will soon be just another bank. The White House must adopt a strategic goal that ENSURES the NCUA properly regulates Cooperative Financial Service Organizations. Understanding the implications of a member owned business and their unique regulatory needs is of the utmost importance for a NCUA Board member. We must protect the Credit Union: demand the Obama Administration appoint a NCUA board member that places Cooperative principles above private capital.4Headline: 111Body: 765WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:Appoint a person to the NCUA board who understands, appreciates, and practices the seven cooperative principlesWe want the White House to adopt and announce a strategic goal to ensure that the NCUA is regulated for the unique needs of cooperative financial service organizations (credit unions) and how these goals are different than banks.Credit unions operate under the seven cooperative principles laid out by the International Co-operative Alliance. These principles include:- Voluntary and Open Membership- Democratic Member Control- Members’ Economic Participation- Autonomy and Independence- Education, Training and Information- Cooperation among Cooperatives- Concern for CommunityThe board member(s) appointed by the White House to oversee the NCUA should understand and desire to implement these core principles into all regulations for NCUA insured credit unions.5Headline: 108Body: 734WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:Appoint Credit Union people to the NCUA Board, not Bankers or Bureaucrats who do not understand cooperativesAmericans who do business with credit unions and those who rely on credit unions for their livelihood UNDERSTAND the difference between credit unions and a bank. Credit unions are customer-owned cooperatives, and as such they should not be forced to adhere to the same regulatory practices as private or publicly-traded banks. Cooperative principles drive credit unions, not private capital and profiteering, and we need a National Credit Union Administration Board that understands what it means to be a cooperative financial institution. The NCUA should be the champion of how customer-owned businesses are vital to the local communities they serve. It is vital that their leaders are also ambassadors of the COOPERATIVE MOVEMENT.6Headline: 78Body: 800Note: not sure of the word "invest"WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:Protect the rights of American Citizens to choose to invest with Credit Unions.According to The Federal Credit Union Act of 1934, the appointment of board members for the administration of Credit Unions states that: “the President shall give consideration to individuals who, by virtue of their education, training, or experience relating to a broad range of financial services, financial services regulation, or financial policy, are especially qualified to serve on the Board.”To protect the founding and core principles that Credit Unions hold to be true, the President needs to consider that the appointee to this board has a demonstrable record of upholding these principles that Credit Unions hold above and beyond the accepted practices of the banking industry. For more information on the seven core principals of Credit Unions, please refer to:: 117Body: 799WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:Appoint NCUA Board Members that will embody the spirit of cooperation from which the Credit Union industry originatedCredit unions, in many ways, embody the same principles from which our country was born: “of the people, by the people, for the people.” The industry grew from banks unwilling to serve communities they deemed too difficult to serve. Communities gathered and in the spirit of cooperation formed credit unions to serve each other and to provide the same opportunities that they had previously been denied. Today, credit unions are at risk of losing that identity and the 7 Cooperative Principles that define them. To preserve this spirit of cooperation and the importance of credit unions, we call upon the office of the White House to appoint NCUA Board Members, the presiding federal regulatory agency, that will retain the values of the industry and the Democratic nature from which it was founded.8Headline: 69Body: 798WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:Ensure that credit unions are regulated as cooperatives, not as banksCurrent NCUA regulatory practices treat credit unions in large part as banks, not as the cooperatives they were designed to be. To ensure that the NCUA promotes the cooperative spirit, we ask that the administration require that NCUA Board members have a solid understanding of and a firm belief in the 7 Cooperative Principles () as evidenced by:- Current membership at a credit union - Five or more years’ experience as a credit union member- Three or more years’ experience in a leadership role at a credit union Setting these minimum requirements for future board appointments will preserve the cooperative spirit around which credit unions were designed and through which they have made such a positive impact on local education, housing, job creation, and small business.9Headline: 46Body: 859WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:Appoint NCUA Leaders Who Champion CooperativesCredit unions are cooperatives. They are not-for-profit entities owned by the members they serve. Credit unions embody the seven cooperative principles () with their commitment to democratic operations, member participation, and community focus.Leaders at the NCUA who shape the credit union regulatory environment should be strong advocates of the cooperative model. They should possess a deep understanding of the unique opportunities and challenges facing cooperatives and work diligently to champion cooperative values throughout the industry. Over 90 million Americans have chosen to become part of a credit union. They deserve leadership that stands up for the core values that set credit unions apart from banks and other for-profit firms.President Obama, please select NCUA leaders who embrace the virtues of the cooperative model. ................
