Job Title: Policy and Research Assistant

Full time (35 hours a week) 6 month fixed term contract

?22,000 per annum

Job Purpose: The Policy and Research Assistant (PRA) is responsible for supporting

Peace Direct's research and advocacy work on locally led peacebuilding in conflict-affected and fragile contexts.

Responsible to:

Research Manager, Policy and Research (P&R) Team

Main Responsibilities

1. Administrative and organisational support for research and advocacy projects, events and team activities.

2. Undertake analysis for projects on a range of issues including: civil society sustainability, funding models, the effectiveness of local peacebuilding, and specific UK policies.

3. Support with research up-take, dissemination and communications, including the preparation of presentations and media activities both internally and externally.

4. Support organisational learning and cross-team collaboration.

Key Tasks

Administrative and organisational support for research and advocacy projects, events and team activities

? Help organise workshops and events in various locations (UK and abroad), including logistics and travel arrangements for participants and Peace Direct staff, drafting agendas and preparing workshop materials.

? Help the P&R team to continuously improve its systems, administrative processes and communication with research partners and other Peace Direct departments.

? Work collaboratively to monitor and learn from research work and ensure lessons are captured and disseminated across the organisation and sector at large.

Undertake analysis for projects on a range of issues including: civil society sustainability, funding models, the effectiveness of local peacebuilding, and specific UK policies.

? Facilitate shared learning between two USAID-funded research projects (`Facilitating Financial Sustainability' and `Stopping as Success'), so that they complement and build on each other's experience.

? Conduct desk research into areas of peacebuilding and local civil society under the direction of the Research Manager.

? Produce a wide range of written documents to support the P&R team, including blogs for external and internal publication, framing text for Platform4Dialogue discussions, policy briefs and provide research support as requested.

? Review and provide high quality input for draft reports and research concept notes. ? Contribute to `Peace Dispatch' reports, drawing on both data and narrative reports from

local researchers. ? Provide general support as needed for Peace Direct's ongoing research projects,

such as Local Works, Local Voices for Peace and online consultations through Platform4Dialogue or any policy and advocacy related work.

Support with research up-take, dissemination and communications, including presentations and media activities both internally and externally.

? Liaise and work closely with the Communications team to promote research findings in an accessible way to a variety of audiences.

? Participate in internal presentations to share research internally. ? Help with the preparation of (external) presentations. ? Support the dissemination of research outputs through social media (e.g. Twitter). ? Write blogs for Peace Direct's websites to raise awareness of our work.

Support organisational learning and cross-team collaboration.

? Work with colleagues to promote organisational learning. ? Work closely across departments, such as International Programmes and

Communications, to inform organisation-wide work and help deliver Peace Direct's strategy. ? Work closely with the Policy and Research team to ensure consistency and alignment of work and to strengthen the research and advocacy capacity.

Environment:

? This position is based at Peace Direct's London office ? Occasional travel within the UK, and potential overseas visits on PD's business,

sometimes to rural / difficult locations.

Reporting:

? This position reports to the Research Manager.

Person Specification

Essential:

? Strong analytical skills and attention to detail. ? Proven ability of working to strict deadlines to deliver high-quality output.

? Flexibility to operate effectively with changing priorities and deadlines. ? Degree in a relevant subject (International Relations, Peace & Conflict/Security,

International Development etc) or equivalent experience. ? Fluent in written and spoken English. ? Experience of qualitative research skills. ? Strong writing skills, with experience of writing for different external audiences. ? A good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PPT.

Desirable: ? Post graduate degree in a related field. ? Ability to speak, read and write in French. ? Experience of organising events/logistical management. ? Understanding of policy contexts. ? Experience of field research. ? Quantitative or mixed research methods experience. ? Experience/knowledge of issues related to local civil society and peacebuilding / working with local actors in developing countries.
