Job Description

Classification: Full Time / Exempt ¨C Minimum 40 hours per week. Weekends, evening, and holiday work

may be required.

Location: Riding Unlimited in Ponder, TX

Summary

This position will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of current and future EAAT programs. The

Program Director / Head Riding Instructor is responsible for overseeing current Riding Unlimited

programs to include planning and coordination of riding session calendar; managing the overall health

and welfare of the Riding Unlimited equine herd through a growth and development plan that aligns

with overall program goals and objectives. Quarterly updates of herd health and wellbeing will be

presented to the Board of Directors.

This position demands the capacity to work closely with volunteers, staff, client riders and their

parents/guardians, and the Executive Director to create environments to connect horses and humans to

achieve our 30-year mission of Turning Disabilities Into Possibilities.

Essential Functions

Equine Herd Development

1. Targets equine recruitment to enhance herd specialization for current rider programming

and works with Executive Director in forecasting additional equine needs based on potential

addition of new programming.

2. Manages and actively participates in the equine schooling team with initial training and

routine exercise programs.

3. Manages the acquisition of new equines including intake evaluation to increase chances of

successful transition into our program; maintains proper documentation and regularly

reports to the Executive Director.

4. Works with Executive Director to maintain PATH International Premier Accreditation.

Equine Care

1. Oversees the care for sick or injured horses, including documentation of care given;

supervises emergency care and equine team on call schedule.

2. Supervises all daily care, veterinary and farrier care, alternative therapies (chiropractic,

massage, laser therapy, etc¡­); ensures proper documentation of care is kept.

3. Supervises scheduling f vet, farrier, and alternative therapy appointments.

4. Establishes a dietary plan for equines to include hay, grain, supplements, and necessary

medications and communicating needs to Barn Manager.

5. Performs biweekly herd inspections to ensure health and wellness of equines.

6. Supervises seasonal equine care needs (fly management in summer, blanketing in winter,

etc¡­)

7. Maintains traveling and ranch equine first aid kits per PATH Standards; ensures vet supplies

are stocked.

Equine Administration

1. Responsible for equine team chore schedule and assignments, including scheduling for

vacation and sick time coverage.

2. Responsible for the annual update of emergency plans.

3. Responsible for yearly equine budget; presents to Executive Director.

4. Prepares monthly Board reports, to include any and all pertinent equine updates.

Program Support

1. Manages equine assignments for all classes, including any substitutions needed.

2. Supports instructors in equine selection.

3. Supervises tack fitting for all equines on a regular basis; assess program equipment needs.

Facilities

1. Reports any safety concerns or issues on the property to the Executive Director.

2. Supervises pasture management plan.

3. Supervises after hours site security.

Other

1. Ensures all PATH International standards for equine management and care are being

adhered to by staff and volunteers.

2. Attends meetings as necessary, including staff meetings, strategic planning meetings, senior

leadership meetings, equine team meetings, facilities meetings, and volunteer and equine

meetings.

3. Teaches assigned weekly lessons including all teaching related tasks, up to 10 hours per

week.

4. Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility

1. Responsible for the supervision of the Barn Manager, Trainers, other staff and volunteers.

Ensures they follow established operation and safety protocols.

2. Ensures the performance of subordinates in fulfilling their responsibilities through training,

support, direction, annual performance reviews, disciplinary action, and/or personally

fulfilling their responsibilities when necessary.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the Program Director may be exposed to airborne particles,

moving mechanical parts, and unpredictable equine behaviors. The Program Director is also frequently

exposed to a variety of extreme weather conditions on facility grounds to include wind, rain, hail, snow,

and high heat indexes.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly expected to talk and hear. The

position is also very physically active and requires standing, walking, jogging, bending, kneeling,

stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, lifting over 30 lbs, and climbing. Strong balance is needed as well

as close, distance, peripheral vision and depth perception. Use of hands and fingers is required.

Required Education and Experience

1. Minimum 10 years¡¯ experience in equine training including schooling/training of horses for

optimal fitness, rehabilitation from illness/injury, and adapting training to specific

therapeutic riding needs.

2. Minimum of 1o years¡¯ experience in operating a barn and equine care and health

management.

3. Extensive experience in evaluating lameness and back soreness as it relates to behavior and

physical discomfort.

4. Supervisory and management experience of equine staff and volunteers.

5. PATH TRI or CTRI certification or Advanced Instructor Certification.

6. Government-issued driver¡¯s license.

Preferred Education and Experience

1. Previous experience as a Program Director or Executive Director

2. Experience operating a tractor, utility vehicle, and power tools.

3. Proficiency in hauling horse trailers.
