University of Maine Job Description TITLE: Director of the Portland Gateway OfficeDEPARTMENT: Office of the Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate SchoolDATE:January 2021REPORTS TO: Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate SchoolPurpose: The Director of the University of Maine Portland Gateway Office oversees and manages its operational functions, in support of the Portland Gateway mission to serve as the front door for the university engagement in the Portland area, increasing the reach of the university, and providing a convenient two-way link between the university and the Portland area community. This is a university-wide initiative that establishes a one-stop connection to the university research, education, and outreach. It is overseen by the University of Maine President, guided by a University Steering Committee, and coordinated through the Office of the Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School, to whose head the Director reports. Essential Duties & Responsibilities:Serves as the main point of contact for the Portland Gateway Office, enabling it to function as a one-stop shop for getting connected and engaged with the University of Maine research, education, and outreach programs and services. Directs the day-to-day management and operational functions of the Portland Gateway Office.Represents the university and advances collaborative efforts through engagement with the universities and research institutions, healthcare providers and medical facilities, industry and businesses, K-12 schools and other entities in Portland and its surrounding region.Pursues and facilitates the building of new research, education, and outreach relationships and partnerships, including with industry, academia, and government, in coordination with the pertinent units within the university.Fosters the growth of existing collaborations between the university and institutions in the Portland area.Promotes and seeks research and development opportunities for the university, and assists its research programs, personnel, and resources that have connections with Portland and its surrounding region.Coordinates and facilitates the offering of educational and professional development programs, including graduate and professional certificates and degrees, short courses, workshops and training programs.Coordinates and facilitates outreach and community engagement activities, including student experiential learning, presentations and workshops, and community activities and events. Supports the development and implementation of strategies and plans for the Portland Gateway to reach its full potential.Supports the development, updating, and delivery of the marketing and communications materials for the Portland Gateway.Serves on relevant committees and other entities within and outside the university. Works effectively and cooperatively with the internal and external mits to organizational improvement by identifying opportunities and contributing to their realization.Performs other relevant tasks that may arise.Knowledge & Skill Qualifications:Required: Typically has a Master’s degree and five or more years of experience. Demonstrated administrative experience.Demonstrated success in working with and leading teams.Demonstrated skill and experience in oral, written, and technological communication, and the development and implementation of plans and communication strategies.Ability to travel, normally requiring a driver’s license.Preferred: Ph.D. degree.Experience with research, education, and/or outreach programs and services in academia. Supervisory Responsibility: This position may supervise hourly and professional staff. Work Environment: This position involves regular interaction with members of the university community, including faculty, staff, and administrators, along with a wide portion of the external community, particularly in the Portland area, including officials from universities and research institutions, federal and state agencies, business and industry leaders, and other key decision makers. ?Work Year: This is a fiscal-year position at the level of 0.5 to up to 1.0 FTE.Work Schedule: Normal University of Maine business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Due to the nature of the position, work beyond regular hours (to include evenings and weekends) may be necessary to meet the requirements of the position. Position Type: On-going, full-time, base budgeted.Schedule for Evaluation: In the initial six months of employment and annually thereafter in accordance with the Non-Represented Handbook.Job Family/Salary Grade: 11/08.
