Compass: Why I Am Still Jewish

Sunday, 22 September 2013

Geraldine Doogue invites some brave believers to dinner - Muslim, Jewish and Catholic - to find out what they believe, and why?

Fifty years ago in Australia, God knew best and religion was part of everyday life. Today people of faith are being challenged like never

before; their institutions are under scrutiny and belief is considered by some to be irrelevant.

So, what's in it for those who remain true to their faith? Why remain religious at all? COMPASS finds out over dinner.

Joining Geraldine for dinner are Bram Presser, Timmy Rubin, Mark Baker and Ronni Kahn who talk about how their faith has informed their values,

what makes 'a good Jew', the role of women in Judaism, and the contentious Israeli-Palestinian divide.

series, we travel the globe with presenter Dallas Campbell, visiting the world's largest and most ambitious engineering projects, exploring the

power of human ingenuity and the making of the modern world.

In the second episode, we explore how we can travel further and faster than ever before - and how our desire to shrink the world is inspiring

some of the most extraordinary engineering projects on the planet. We reveal how to move an object the size of Buckingham Palace half way

around the globe and we examine how we have created a permanent home beyond the atmosphere in space, and here on earth.

Sunday, 22 September 2013 New Series

1964-65. Singapore. Political and racial tensions are at fever pitch as the British pull out, and a new nation is about to be born. The lights

of Bugis Street burn bright: bootleg copies of Motown songs boom out from street stalls; the Rolling Stones are in town along with American

sailors fresh from Vietnam. They join British and Australian soldiers checking out the prostitutes and gambling dens en route to their own war

in Borneo.

The sun may have set on the Empire, but British and Australian troops are still in the middle of an intense four-year jungle war in

neighbouring Borneo, while in one year, terrorists will set off more than 29 bombs in Singapore itself. The Cold War is hot in the tropics;

Chinese gangs prosper; and people die as the city is hit by terrorist bombs.

This is the city of Sam Callaghan, Patricia Cheng, the CIA's Conrad Harrison.

Sam Callaghan runs a sporadic import/export business with his Malayan partner Kang, but agrees to help neighbour Patricia Cheng at her

detective agency after her husband is killed while working on a case. Sam is an asset with his contacts in the Chinese and Malay communities,

as well as among US/British ex-pats. But, after a childhood in a POW camp and a chequered career in military intelligence during the Malay

Emergency, he is also carrying a lot of baggage.

Eventually he is effectively working almost full-time at the agency. Sam's contacts from his military days are useful - but they start to drag

him back into a dark world that he would prefer to leave behind.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:

A co-production partnership between ABC TV and HBO Asia with the participation of ScreenWest and Media Development Authority of Singapore. Produced by Great Western Entertainment and Infinite Studios.

Rise Of The Continents: The Americas

Tuesday, 24 September 2013

Across the Earth there are traces of a mysterious land unlike anything seen today - a supercontinent that split apart to create our world. This

is the story of how life, land and time came together to create the extraordinary diversity of the seven continents.

Today, each continent has its own distinctive character, rich with its own resources - and teeming with diverse life forms. But just how did

fossilised whales appear in the Sahara desert and what role did the breakup of the supercontinent play in the evolution of the dinosaurs?

Piecing together clues from across the globe and using cutting edge CGI, Rise of the Continents puts the giant jigsaw puzzle of Pangaea back

together; uncovering the turbulent story of each continent and revealing why each one is unique.

From the bedrock the Empire State Building is built on, to the Spanish empires in South America, the two land masses of North and South America

are linked by geology and history. Today North and South America has some of the most spectacular landscapes on earth. They are the product of

a violent geological past that shaped an equally turbulent human history.

Tractor Monkeys: Fashion

Wednesday, 25 September 2013 New Series

Tractor Monkeys is back and ready to take you on another hilarious ride through our amazing past!

Join host Merrick Watts and team captains Dave O'Neil and Monty Dimond as they go back through time to celebrate Australia at its best and best

forgotten, during the hilarious new season of the comedy quiz show Tractor Monkeys (9 x 30').

With Merrick at the helm, Dave and Monty will heroically lead some of Australia's favourite comedians and entertainers. Stepping up to

reminisce this season are Noeline Brown, Shane Jacobson, Glenn Robbins, Kerri-Anne Kennerley, Marcia Hines, Hannah Gadsby, Denise Scott, Daryl

Braithwaite, Sammy J, Tom Ballard and many more.

New to this season are themed episodes. From fashion, love and family to technology, sport and leisure - and of course TV - Tractor Monkeys is

now much more about the personal stories that the archive gold inspires, as the teams tap into both shared experiences and their own surprising

anecdotes.

It's a chance for Merrick and the teams to reminisce about growing up in Australia, share their teenage secrets and laugh at how much we have

changed - or cringe at how much we haven't. What was the best show bag at the Easter Show? Was your family like the Donahers in Sylvania

Waters? How thick was the shag pile in your panel van? What did you play - Pong or Street Fighter 2?

As well as the stories there will be fast-paced question rounds, physical and interactive games and lots of rich archive footage.

For our audience, there will be the chance to see things from their past or to discover the origins of their popular culture. Because one

person's fond memory is another's squeamish mistake, it is a gentle reminder to Gen Y that they did not invent being cool and a reminder to Gen

X that no one looked good in shoulder pads. There will be plenty of fun at each generation's expense, but in the end there will be something

for everybody sitting on the couch.

Episode 1 - Fashion: Wednesday 25th September at 8pm on ABC1

Guests: Kerri-Anne Kennerley and James Kerley on Dave's team and Mark Trevorrow and Hannah Gadsby on Monty's team.

Immoral mini skirt shock! Go-Go dancers run wild! Even men wearing cologne! There is never a dull moment in fashion.

In our first episode for the season we look at the fashion trends and fads that we have been obsessed with over the last 40 years. We celebrate

moments in Aussie fashion, like Jenny Kee jumpers and Ken Done t-shirts, and jump back into the music videos of the 80s and 90s to revisit our

style icons and what they inspired us to wear, including Dave O'Neil's infatuation with Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon.

Mark tells us about the Aussie long lost teen tribe of Sharpies and their totally original pre-punk look and dance. The audience is surprised

by how much work goes into Kerri-Anne Kennerley's wardrobe, but is unsurprised by how much she knows about sequins. Sixties fashion designer

Mary Quant truly alarms Hannah Gadsby, and James Kerley tells us about his journey from a Bon Jovi lookalike to a mean breakdancer.

Julia Zemiro's Home Delivery

Wednesday, 25 September 2013

Julia Zemiro's Home Delivery is a new series in which the always entertaining Julia Zemiro walks a well-known comedian down memory lane,

uncovering the forces and events that have shaped them and created the person we know today.

Shot completely on location, each journey begins with Julia picking up the guest. From there they travel through time - or on the bus,

whichever is quicker - to the guest's childhood home. Along the way, they discuss life and love, past and future.

At the childhood home, the guest has a moment to consider the directions life has taken, the paths that have been wandered. Then each guest

takes Julia on an adventure. They re-create a journey that resonates with their past. It may be the walk from home to primary school, or the

train trip to high school in town. Julia and her guest will walk with the ghosts, past old hang outs, past scraped knees and first kisses, past

indelible memories. The walk ends at the old school gate.

Julia Zemiro's Home Delivery is intimate, natural and revealing. It shows that our past, our present and our future are all there inside us,

just waiting to come out, waiting to go for a walk.

Catalyst

Drones

The military use of drones or UAVs has brought us into an age of flying robots. There's plenty of optimism about their use for civilian purposes, everything from search-and-rescue to even pizza delivery. But when it comes to where the technology is really at, is there a gap between expectation and reality? Mark Horstman visits the Australian Research Centre for Aerospace Automation in Queensland to find out how they are teaching drones to think for themselves.

Gonorrhoea

In the past decade, rates of sexually transmissible infections (STIs) in Australia have been rising. One such STI is gonorrhoea - it's fast becoming a sexually transmitted superbug, resistant to every antibiotic in stock. Researchers are busily working on new antibiotics to destroy the bug, but if they fail, a global crisis could unfold. Dr Graham Phillips investigates whether a new antibiotic can be discovered before gonorrhoea runs rampant.

Bike rage

With a never ending stream of cars on our roads and traffic congestion out of control, cycling is becoming more and more popular. But with bikes and cars sharing our roads, bike rage is fast becoming the new road rage. An online survey of Queensland cyclists found that over 70 percent reported experiencing harassment in the past 12 months. But why do drivers seem to rage against cyclists? Surveys suggest that drivers view cyclists as ‘the other’ and are quick to judge them based on emotions rather than logic. It turns out that the same psychological mechanisms which drive racism and sexism could also be causing this ire towards cyclists. Simon Pampena experiences the rage.
