Dancing King

Sunday,4 September 2011

One of Britain's most successful producers, the fearless and determined David King, wants to bring Michael Jackson back to the stage, with a Man in the Mirror tribute show.

The huge production could give a selected few talented artists the break of a lifetime.

But when auditions kick off in London, King discovers more wackos than Jackos.

It will be his biggest musical to hit the global stage and the search for the best Michael Jackson will be a tough feat - particularly as there are just four weeks to cast and polish the show before it opens in Monte Carlo.

British and American hopefuls throw themselves into the mix, trying to impress him.

Glastonbury

Sunday,4 September 2011

Imagine if Woodstock, the defining cultural event of the Sixties, had continued to exist over the last three decades. How would it have changed, evolved and adapted to a world which was being completely rewritten around it? How much of the idealism and communality of the original event would have survived?

How much would the inexorable pressures of consumerism and corporate sponsorship have transformed the founding ethos of the event? And what a powerful mirror it would hold up to the extraordinary changes which have taken place in the way we live our lives in the last 30 years.

Of course Woodstock and most of the other music festivals of the era did not survive. Only one did and its name is Glastonbury.

The mirror exists. The contrast between the unchanging spirit which remains at the heart of the UK's Glastonbury Festival and the overwhelming difference in the way we now live our lives, forms the central dynamic of this film.

Of course the festival itself and the individuals behind it have had to adapt and respond to the commercial, political and cultural changes which have taken place around them, but the founding vision of the festival has never been devalued.

Fuelled by the staggering range of music which has appeared at Glastonbury over the years, the film humorously accesses all its areas, inviting the audience to submerge themselves in the spirit, characters and overwhelming sensory experiences of the festival.

Carlos: Part Two

Monday,5 September 2011

From Olivier Assayas, comes a powerful three-part series; an epic portrayal of the notorious revolutionary and terrorist, Ilich Ramírez Sánchez: Carlos the Jackal, starring Édgar Ramírez who earned a Golden Globe® nomination for the role.

In this second episode we follow a detailed account of the operation that remains one of the most spectacular terrorist acts of the period. Leading a group of six militants - leftists from German revolutionary cells and Palestinian militants - Carlos seizes control of the OPEC headquarters, taking ministers and accompanying delegates hostage. He is at the height of his notoriety in the media. However, by finally releasing the ministers at Algiers airport in exchange for a large ransom, he fails the mission that Haddad (Almad Kaabour) had given him.

This marks the end of relations between the two men. From now on, Carlos becomes a mercenary for hire to whichever country offers the most. First Iraq, then Syria. He switches operations to behind the Iron Curtain, moving between Budapest and East Berlin under the protection of the Stasi. He works with the remnants of the revolutionary cells, in particular Johannes Weinrich (Alexander Scheer) and his wife Magdalena Kopp (Nora Von Waldstätten), who soon leaves Weinrich for Carlos.

twentysomething

Tuesday,6 September 2011

Early Saturday morning, housemates Jess (Jess Harris) and Josh (Josh Schmidt) awake dehydrated and disorientated after an impromptu house party, only to discover a real estate agent circling their front garden like a shark, preparing to open their rental house for inspection. Late for work they flee the scene, leaving the post party mess for unassuming Abby (Leah de Niese) to sweet talk their way out of.

This starts a spiral effect for Jess and Josh and by the end of the day they find themselves unemployed, possibly evicted and stuck at a tacky 21st surrounded by family and friends asking the dreaded question, "So what are you up to at the moment?" Neither have an impressive answer. While Josh's more successful older brother Nick (Simon Russell) grills him on his future plans, or lack thereof, Jess has a flirtatious run-in with an old fling, Billy (Hamish Blake), who has recently returned home from travelling overseas.

When Jess and Josh finally discover their eviction notice, they only have two days left until they have to vacate. Deciding to hit rock bottom and go up from there, they pull their whole lives out onto the front lawn, burn what they don't need and sell the rest in a last minute garage sale. Things take an expensive turn when Josh mistakes the 'eviction' party for a 'demolition' party...

Louis Theroux: The Most Hated Family in America

Wednesday,7 September 2011

Louis Theroux is back and he uncovers the inside story of America's most controversial family - the Phelps from the Westboro Baptist Church.

Is there more to this tight knit group than appalling picketing slogans?

Chanting slogans like, 'thank god for dead soldiers' and 'fags die - God laughs', it is easy to comprehend why the Phelps have become the most hated family in America. These eccentrics will stop at nothing to get their message across, picketing any newsworthy event year round - even soldiers’ funerals.

The family, all 71 of them, live on a single block in a wealthy suburb of Topeka, Kansas and Louis moved right in! Louis uncovers the peculiar and intense dynamics of this family with their unwavering moral beliefs. Along the way we meet: Fred, the loving grandfather and husband who leads his grandchildren on ten pickets a day; Shirley, his daughter, who enrages viewers by thanking the Lord for 9/11 and dead soldiers; and Margie, another daughter, who pickets furiously but then weeps about her own sin.

As the Phelps become more vocal their enemies are becoming more violent: 3,000 people rioted against them at a funeral, their car was smashed, one family member was beaten, they received telephone threats, and have even had a bombing at their compound.

For Louis living with these people was tough: “As individuals they are hard to dislike - but as a group they hard to stomach”, he says.

Misfits: Christmas Special

Friday,9 September 2011

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in this particularly irreverent Yuletide episode of Misfits.

Community service is finally over and it's time for our favourite delinquents to settle back into normal life - albeit with superpowers.

Out in the miserable world of work, not much is happening on the estate a week before Christmas until Alisha (Antonia Thomas) spots some graffiti offering 'Cash For Powers'.

At the address advertised Alisha meets Seth (Matthew McNulty), a drug dealer who was also struck in the storm and now has the ability to remove and give powers - for the right price, of course.

Meanwhile, chief misfit Nathan (Robert Sheehan) is looking forward to a dull Christmas as an unconvincing Santa, when he meets a new, very pregnant, girlfriend.

Elsewhere, Seth is now dealing powers instead of dealing drugs and that leads to a whole lot of craziness.

Even the reluctant Simon (Iwan Rheon) is persuaded to trade powers which turns bad when the gang are robbed by a gunman working for 'Jesus', a disillusioned and now crazed priest (Howard Hogg) who bought several special powers from Seth to serve his ministry.

The misfits confront Seth with a view to regaining their special powers or maybe even different powers.

A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg

The plight of an English couple struggling to raise a disabled child is given a darkly humorous treatment in this English comedy.

The film centres on the parents of Jo, nicknamed 'Joe Egg', a mentally challenged invalid subject to violent seizures. The couple attempts to maintain a stoic and occasionally cheerful facade in the face of their daughter's condition, but they find themselves unable to cope with the strain. Faced with the imminent collapse of their marriage, they eventually agree that euthanasia may be the answer to their troubles.

Directed by Peter Medak, A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg stars Alan Bates, Janet Suzman and Peter Bowles.
