all the new Westerners a very warm welcome to you all my name is Zubaz vos and I'm both a contact service officer at the University and a current international student I'd like to let you know that I'd be the master of the of this webinar this afternoon I'd like to begin by addressing the pandemic and acknowledging that we are in extraordinary times right now echoing our pro-vice-chancellor the decisions Western Sydney University has made to keep our students safe have been made on the basis of the best and most expert advice when you have a chance we encourage you to visit the web site on screen to read through the information online about the student support currently available to you not only you'll find the information there but there is also an extensive list of frequently asked questions and answers that have been compiled throughout the pandemic based on real inquiries from our students you may find that you have a question that has already been answered on the website moving on although we are currently learning on online we are fortunate that we have access to state-of-the-art technology along with the staff that are extremely experienced speaking from my own personal student as an antenna international student currently studying online I found experience to be phenomenal I acknowledged that this has been a significant change to our studies in my case especially being customed to face-to-face learning for the past years but the quick responses the flexibility and online classes acted as a great motivation and as an incentive to keep the studies going moreover looking under the bright side of the situation I found this allowed me to have a greater and better work-life steady balance as well you'd be thrilled to know that the portals are the platforms that we use which includes zoom and Blackboard Collaborate our Glade great platforms to interact between students between peers and between your academics as well you I'd like to welcome son Kim from the International student welfare coordinator from the student welfare team she'll go over some of the obligation shelter requirements there are expected as a student of Western Sydney University hi everyone I would also like to extend my very warm welcome and my personal welcome to all of you to westerns in the university and it's been certainly a tough year so far so for you to make it today to start your degree at Western it's a great milestone so congratulations I'm the international student welfare coordinator and I work with many other staff at Western Sydney University to provide support to international students the amazing professional staff services that Linda mentioned earlier one of them is welfare service so we work with international students every single day and we get to know their stories their hopes and fears we also hear lists of struggles as well so hopefully during your stay at Winston's in the university we get to know your side of story your dreams and we get to support your journey we're here to work with you to help you get through your studies when things don't get as planned so it's really important for us to know when you are struggling or when you get support so we can provide adequate support to you in a timely manner so there are so many aspects when it comes to international student support and you can get direct support from other areas of university but if you're not sure about who to talk to welfare service is the team that you can reach out there are some of things you can get assistance from welfare team which is on the slide so we can help you understand university policies and procedures it can get really overwhelming and there's so much information that you have to understand so if you are unsure about what policies and procedures you need to follow please contact wellfest office anytime we can also help you with personal issues guide you with your visa related matters however if you have any specific questions in relation to your visa the best thing to do is to contact Department of Home Affairs directly we can also refer you to other services if it's not something that we can assist you with so please feel free to contact welfare service if you're not sure about who to contact so as an international student on a student visa there are conditions you need to abide by such as studying full-time working limited hours during your study and maintaining your enrolments and good course progression there is also federal law that protects you as an as an overseas students which is called education services for overseas students esource and under the esource Act there is a set of standards that the education providers need to follow to make sure that we provide quality support through international students and that allows you to change your enrolment especially when you're experiencing any compelling or compassionate circumstances that is out of your control if you need to reduce your study load because of any personal medical reasons if you need to take a leave because you're unable to study in in particular session you will need to get an approval from University but it is a possible option as much as we understand that you need to follow a student visa conditions we also understand that life is not always going as you planned sometimes things can happen out of your control so this allows you to make some changes without breaching your student visa conditions so if you need to make any changes in your enrolment during your study welfare officer is the person you need to discuss your circumstances Oh this information is available on our web page so the web page as you can see on the slide you can either search when you go onto our main page search on a quick link put International Student Support or the web address is Western Sydney that edu that I knew all / international student support we put all information that may be relevant to you on this one page so we'll have so many links to different web page within the university or outside University you can get a lot of information from this page we also have this page translated into five different languages other than English as well so I have a look at the web page and understand what we can offer you my services we can offer you but also what other services you can access through the university as well if you need to contact us please call us on this number 1366 8370 or email welfare studies at Western Sydney University our response time is quite quick so we always check our emails if you have any issues that you're struggling with the best thing to do is to contact us as early as possible the sooner you contact us the more support we may be able to provide to you and one of the most common issues that we come across with international student is culture shock it may not seem very obvious at the beginning sometimes culture shock can come in a different shape so students may experience homesickness mild depression anxiety or any other symptoms physical symptoms that can be caused by culture shock there are a lot of support services that are available to help you to settle better in Australia and also at Western Sydney in terms of a study and in terms of a living it's really important for you to do a bit of study and research on your own also reach out to those services and participate in as many activities as possible which will be shared later on about Western life we've got so many activities run online at this at this time so it's important for you to participate to make different to make friends meet different people especially when we're not having that opportunity to meet people in person one of the great ways to meet other students and also to learn about Australian culture is English conversation groups English conversation groups are offered to international students online this time and it's run by our student facilitators it's free to join and it's a great and fun way to practice your English as most of you English is your second language studying in a second language in a foreign country can be very challenging and this program can help you one practice your English practice your presentation skills but also make friendship with people from different cultural background so the information is available on their webpage for /again English conversation and have a look at the information and join the program if you can ok so the next amazing another program that can help The next amazing program that can help you with culture shock?and also?help you settle better in Western Sydney is?MATES?program.?So I will now hand you over to Michelle?Gillard from?MATES?to share more about the program,?but before I go I just wish you all the best for your study and please don't forget to contact welfare services?if you need any assistance as early as possible.?Thank you?Hi everyone,?I’m?Michelle Gillard,?I’m?the?MATES?Program?Coordinator.?I'm?also a student at?Western Sydney?University and?I?just wanted to share with you some of the information about the?MATES?program and the?International?Buddy?Program.?So?our?MATES?program is a mentoring program for new students both;?domestic and international students,?and your mentor is a student who is further along in their degree.?So?they've been at?university?for at least a year and they're there support you.?So?the way that the sessions work?is?they meet with you via zoom and they meet?if you once a week for at least the first eight weeks of university life.?They're there to?have a chat?with.?So?you can ask them any questions and they'll help point you in the right direction. They’ll?also share a bit of their journey so what they experienced as a new student,?which helps to normalize what you may be feeling at this time as well.?So?the mentors are?really fantastic?and make?you feel a little bit more settled into university life.?Knowing that you've got a peer who you can talk?to?so you don't feel sort of any judgment?and?you don't feel that your questions are silly is?really important?part of our program. With our mentors we have both domestic?and international students who are our mentors in our?program?and we have anywhere from 60 to 120 mentors at any given time.?One thing we do find is that our mentees;?the new students,?who join our program give us a lot of feedback about how the mentor made them feel?really comfortable?at university.?So the mentor can talk to you about any struggles that you're having and they'll help to point you to the services that can assist you such as welfare and our disability services,?our student central team so all the services that will help you when you're not sure where to go to will point you in that direction.?But?they'll also talk about the fun stuff,?so they'll make you aware of what's happening online?at the moment?and once we're face-to-face in the face-to-face environment as well.?So?some of the fun events that are happening so that?you can?build those connections with other students.?So MATES?is a mentoring program?and you would get to meet with your mentor once a week for at least the first eight weeks of session and if you want you can actually extend that time so we will be running the program all the way through spring this year.?So?you will get more time with your mentor.?What we'll do now is we'll?actually talk?about the?International?Buddy?Program. It?is a little bit different to?MATES,?so?it?MATES?is?very focused on mentoring.?The International?Buddy?Program;?what we do is we send out information to?you?but you don't have a one-on-one relationship with?the international?buddies. So it's a little bit different to the mentoring so what we do is we run weekly international zoom sessions and what we are doing with those sessions is we're focusing on?things that are really important to you as an international student so we talk about what's happening with?COVID?19 and the impacts that it may have on you?and?traveling.?We also talk about?what's happening?in Western?Life,?we bring in guest speakers so sometimes we'll have the welfare team join us other times we'll have the English conversation groups join us.?We're also joined by careers and careers talks about a whole host of exciting things to do with your career. With?your resume,?your cover letter,?how to find employment,?casual employment,?how to get involved in?internships so the zooms vary every week and they run for an hour each week. We also send weekly emails which have timely information,?so we call it?Just?in?Time?information's?and we send it to you when you really need it so lots of important information comes out in those.?We also use utilize social networks such as Facebook and the Western Life website to interact with you,?so again you can contact us if you have any questions. The question could it be as simple as what's the weather like in Australia,?what do I need to bring to Australia so that I'm comfortable at this time of year or it could be I don't know where I'm going to live?can you point me in the right direction and we'll point into the right people who could assist you with that type of inquiry.?And once we're back on campus?will be running face-to-face events that is a way?of,?but we do fantastic fun of zoom events?at the moment?which gets you involved so thank you.???I will just add so we do have a link on here so you can?actually just?scan that QR code on your phone and that will give you a link to our registration page. We also have the registration address down the bottom if for any reason you can't do that,?feel free to send me a chat so I'm Michelle Gillard in the list.?Make sure to include?your student?number and I'll make sure that we get those links out to you by Monday.?Thank you I'd like to thank Michelle for sharing on all the?facilities available for new students.?Also?I'd like to mention that for all the students out there this session would be available to you,?if anyone's?not available at the current time to attend the live meeting.?Before we go?ahead with the current slide,?I'd like to mention that we will cover a lot of?important information today,?from student services that we have already covered,?the careers and also how to stay safe while you're studying with us.?At the end of the session,?we'll post a link in the zoom chat box to a new session,?which begins at 4 p.m. and we'd be answering your questions and covering information on accepting your offer,?fee payment,?enrolment,?and tutorial?registration.?We can already see there are quite a lot of questions on that coming up on the chats already and we acknowledging them so please stay online we'll be providing the link for the next Q&A session that will happen at 4 o'clock Australian Eastern Standard Time.?That?brings us to?Overseas?Student?Health?Care commonly referred as?OSHC; Overseas?Student?Health?Care is basically your insurance while you're studying as an international student.?Many of you will have your health care cover with Allianz. Or?you might have it with another provider. If in an?instant,?you are with another provider simply refer to your policy or their website for more information. For Allianz?policies here the most important things that you would need to know about the overseas health care,?the first things first?is?how to find your policy number. This is basically your student ID,?let it be 1/8?bla?bla?bla?that will come to the?8-digit?student number + UWS?on?the end.?The next main thing is where to get help. Now Allianz has got a lot of ways to get in touch with them, which are listed on the following slide. Now this includes the on-campus support, which is available at 12 our Western Sydney University campuses. It also includes getting in touch with them via phone along with the phone number provided, feel free to note it down or just take the picture on your phone as well. They've also got a 24-hous helpline for medical assistance, legal, and any sort of interpreting services. If in an event which is not an?emergency,?you can email them at?oshc@.au. More?over quite?like?insurance if you need to make claims for the payments you've made to the doctor or for medications, you can make claims through the number provided in the slide.?After you've gotten enrolled in a course and as an international student?myself,?I felt that securing a career seems to be the next big question mark in your progression. To help you and introduce the support and assistance that is available at Western, I would like to welcome Jackie Simpson from Careers.?Jackie: hi guys I would also like to extend my welcome to you and hope that you have some great things coming up for you while you're here at Western. I just want to talk about some of the ways that we can also help you. I wanted to tell you about some of the things that our program offers to?you. While?you're at Western we really want you to start early in terms of starting to look for your jobs and starting to work on getting your career started. When you first start at an any new place whether it's a new country, a new city, a new school, there's a lot of adjustments that?have to?take place in the first part. That's the same when you are looking for a new job or looking for a job. So what we would really suggest is that?in your?first few months while you're here, you really start to settle in to the life here in Australia and get used to some of the cultural differences when you're going to start applying for jobs.?One of the first things that employers look for, is an affinity with you and they look for people most often people like themselves. So they may not necessarily say that you have to look the same but they look for people who have attitudes very similar to their own client market. If you can get involved in as many opportunities as you can in your first few months while you're here, get involved in student clubs do volunteer work try and?hook?in to?some of the things that are happening on Western life. You will start to become part of the furniture here at Western and you will start to have a good understanding of what the culture is like in Australian workplaces.?That's just a little bit different in the same way that a Japanese culture is slightly different to a New Zealand culture, one workplace culture is slightly different to another. Even the University here our University here at Western you've chosen because of a?particular reason?we have a slightly different culture to say if you had gone to a university in Melbourne.?So?if you can start to get an understanding of how the Australian culture works, that will help you in terms of getting into a job very?quickly.?We can help you with your job seeking and that's what we're here for we can help to get you involved in. We can offer?jobs;?we have a program called career hub. Career hubs is our online job board which has lots and lots of resources about finding your way into work in Australia. We present jobs internships, graduate jobs when you finish, lots of information there where you can go online and you can look for jobs within the university or outside of the university - we're here to help you in that respect.?We?actually don't?have a hotline?at the moment, what we have is something called our world of work sessions which we run every Monday Wednesday and Friday. Those sessions where you can answer ask questions, you could have the Q&A, we have some hand-picked jobs so that we tell people about jobs that would be very suitable for international students but you also have the opportunity to ask questions. Usually it's just a small number so it's not too intimidating and we're there to?give you immediate assistance if?if?that's what you're seeking.??We also have a program that is especially for international students and that's called our Get Real program and you can see the website they're on online. It is westernsydney.edu.au/get real?and that is a place where we've tried to put?all of?the resources to do with them job seeking for international students all in the one place.?So?it tells you about how to find a part-time job, how to connect with employers, maybe you're interested in finding a mentor, we can tell you about mentoring. We've got some employability programs, so sometimes your first interaction with an employer may not be a paid job. Often that's quite good because it's?away?that you can test out your skills, you can find out a little bit about the workplace, you can work in a group and have some support. So?our employability?programs are about getting you in touch with employers in a very easy way working on a project together with other students. We can also assist you with your resumes, with making applications and much?more information but look for the Get Real program when you go on to?Career Hub?and that we can give you some assistance there.??The message from us number one; start early in getting involved, practice speaking to as many people as, you can get involved that is the first step before getting a job. Then the next thing is to make sure you're getting involved in lots of different opportunities, maybe volunteering etc. The other thing is to take opportunities when they come to you, sometimes you might think "oh look I'm not quite ready for that opportunity" the thing is those opportunities don't always come by. We've just had a program that we have just closed yesterday called Interchange and I know students have said I'm not quite ready for it?yet?but the thing is that opportunity doesn't come up again for another 12 months. We've had other programs that just recently global?scope?but that opportunity doesn't come up again for a while. In?fact,?that opportunity does come up again in November so if you see a program called Global Scope go for it that's an opportunity to do this work with other students on some projects with employers. Anyway, take those opportunities when they come.?We wish you all the best and do hop on board they Get Real program do come into career hub which you can access from?the Western app or you can access it from the home page when you look online under students. We hope that we can see you somewhere and wish you all the best while you're here with us at Western.??Thank you for all those informative facts and i can't stress enough on everything that Jackie mentioned. Take hold of the opportunities that will be available to you, don't wait because there is no harm in giving it a try and just applying for it. Go through and make use of the resources available to you through the university and different departments, it's all going to work out very well. This is for prospective students and current students as well, as there will be quite a lot of opportunities that are advertised in the career hub website so feel free to jump on that and have a look for the opportunities that are available to you.??Now for Safety. Safety and security of our students is one of our main priorities. As a Western Sydney University student, it is one of your biggest obligation to be aware of your safety. While you are studying online, either offshore or onshore, you must be aware of the cybersecurity and how to stay safe. Our IT Support team is readily available to you, if you have any questions. There are a lot of great resources on our website that you should take the time to read. You can contact the IT support team via the MyIT Portal. You can see it on the slide as well, it’s available via the Western Sydney Home page.?The best practices to avoid any circumstances where you're vulnerable to a cyberattack are in any cybersecurity issues the student cyber security guard is available for you to read online the main things to remember number one be smart with your devices be sure to log them with a password our fingerprint recognition don't leave your Bluetooth or Wi-Fi running when you're out and also do not access sensitive data when you're on a public Wi-Fi or when you're in the café next is to be sceptical with the emails meaning if you receive an email from an unknown or unusual email address do not open the email do not click on links that you find suspicious the University and other businesses will never ask you for your personal information via an email so do not provide things like passwords your banking details or any sort of personal information to anyone and coming down finally be very secure with the accounts make sure you said very strong passwords with eight or more characters and don't use the same password for different accounts don't write down any password anywhere if you take care while it's online we'll be okay don't forget you can always contact our IT support team for any sort of assistance on our online learning platforms we can't wait to welcome you all back on campus we do acknowledge that many of our attendees today are accessing this webinar offshore when you do return we have a great campus safety and security who do a lot and a lot to keep you safe while you here starting off with they're always on site / either by foot patrols are by a patrolling on a vehicle there are certain emergency points on the campus and phones across our campuses so that in any circumstances if you feel unsafe you have that opportunity you have that resources to contact the security evacuations first aid incident reporting lost property and escorts are all handled by a campus safety and security referrals to New South Wales Police and Western Sydney Student Support Services no smoking or vaping is permitted on any of our campuses no wildlife and snakes are available are permitted on any of our campuses well you have to be very aware of certain misconduct rules that are provided on our website and the campus safety and security keeps out good check on that but keeping all this aside always have fun be safe and be respectful while you're in campus here's some emergency tax that will be useful when you arrive in Sydney and on campus the first one number on screen is the number to call for an on-campus instance in Australia our emergency services is triple zero and you can call this in the event of an emergency both on-campus or off-campus as well in case if you need an ambulance a fire truck or even the police it is the one number for all three services we also recommend you download the emergency app that's highlighted on the slide it's a great app that allows you to share your location easily with emergency services if you're ever in trouble moving on to the next slide at Westin we acknowledge that face to face learning is something that it's widely and most commonly practiced all over the world and this transition can be something of a significant importance to all of our students so just to give you an overview we've got our library liaison Emma Barrington to speak to you about the library resources available to you I would like to help welcome Emma my apologies and when it seems like your microphone is muted there we go can you hear me now yep thank you we have eight physical campus libraries for those who are studying onshore you can attend any of those you can see one behind me here with the books and the furniture computers study spaces but also for those who are studying offshore it's really good to know that a lot of our library resources are actually online so they're available anywhere anytime and online when you need them we have over million digital resources we have online subject guides for your course which you can access via the Western Sydney University website so it's linked at the top we have video and I Sight tools to support your referencing is essential correct referencing is essential at University so you know we can support you with that and you know marks are often allocated for your referencing component so it's really important to make sure you reference correctly and we really encourage students to go beyond Google and to get the edge in their studies using the resources from the library and these include databases journals and articles in your field of study we also have interactive learning apps and modules online tutorials around successful searching using Turn it in which is a program that you submit assignments through so we've got help around using Turnitin we have my library which is an online way that you can see what items you have online which books you have borrowed and you can renew them online and we also have study break which is a way to access popular print books ebooks and audio books online you can also follow us on the social media shown the page with the links to contact the library you can also contact us on our website if what we've got an online chat box you can ask questions anything library related you can be helped with referencing if you're having any issues accessing an online resource please contact us that way even if you're in the library and it's good to remember that in the library we're expected to be considerate of others and mindful of noise levels so if you're studying and noise you hear some noise and it's disturbing you please just let us know straight away and we will deal with it and so yeah you can contact us online 10:00 a.m. to 4:00p.m. Monday to Friday Australian Eastern Standard Time and I can also put the link to the library website in the chat as well thank you for that Emma and for all our future students out there definitely make use of all of these resources as you get into the university these will be very helpful for the long run especially the ones that emma has mentioned starting with getting your reports checked knowing about referencing these are some of the vital parts of your study that you'd need you'd be coming through as you progress so if you need any assistance feel free to reach out to librarians online and once we continue with our on-campus studies as well now we'll be focusing on something a tad bit different that you look into and you'll come across as you complete your enrolment these are V UW s is the Western Sydney University's on online learning platform where you'll find your course information coursework and assessment information and much more it basically acts as a hub for all of the necessary information for the subjects or units you'd be enrolled in starting from the recorded lectures announcements made by
