Sherolyn Rymal, ARE6049, History of Teaching ArtPersonal History of Art Education NarrativeMy first experiences of art education were from my mother, who is also an artist. She taught me how to sew and make crafts and jewelry as she had a business that revolved around seashells as we have lived in Florida all of our lives. I also joined Girl Scouts and earned many “badges”. At age nine, I was able to take formal art lessons at the local community center in Tampa. My older cousin also took lessons with me and her grandmother, Mrs. Self, owned and ran a very progressive private Kindergarten called “Maryland”. When I was about ten years old, I was asked to illustrate the annual circus in pastels as I was learning formal techniques in charcoal and pastels at the time.As I continued to learn more about art, Mrs. Cherne’ influenced me as a mentor and I have many fond memories of learning how to draw with charcoal, oils and acrylics. As I began high school, I transitioned to two very influential art teachers named Miss Gomez and Mrs. Forrester who honed my skills and taught silscreen, India ink, graphite, colored pencils and watercolors. As a result, the teachers entered my pieces in many art contests and I won many contests. As a senior, I was able to work in a high school internship at the Tampa Tribune as a graphic artist. Later in my freshman year at F.S.U., I was able to work on campus at the local newspaper and as a college intern at the St. Pete Times in News Art. My VisCom Professor at F.S.U. ,Mr. McGiness, encouraged me in many mediums and getting workplace experience. After my graduation from Florida State University, I began my art career at a design firm that specialized in natural history for National Wildlife Refuges and Museums. The owner and head artist, Marvin Cook, had great influence on me as I became the main illustrator there. Moving to Orlando was a change, but I was able to continue and flourish as a graphic designer where I began work as a contract graphic designer at Walt Disney World Design and Engineering. My first project was as a graphics team member for the new Mickey’s Birthdayland Pavilion project. I met many influential people there such as the legend, John Hench, an old Art Director for Walt, my first overall Senior Graphics Manager, “Brother” Dave Marquis, Rebecca Fox, my first Lead Designer, and Laura Madewell, my first direct Graphic Design Manager. Laura and I worked together as Job Captains of a large new Pavilion Project at EPCOT which prepared me for more projects and becoming a lead graphic designer in 1996 at Walt Disney Imagineering when W.D.I. took over WDW D&E. I also met Pat Bean, who was the head of the Interior Design Team and later she became my Art Director for the W.D.I. division of the WDW Hotels and Resorts. When I returned in 1996, Mike Kennedy was my assigned Show Design mentor as we worked on many Third Party Cart designs together. When the September 11th W.D.I. layoff happened to me, I was concerned about my future, however, I was fortunate to find teaching my career to high school students at my daughter’s high school in Clermont, Florida as the new Commercial Art teacher. In my tenth year as an educator, my life has been extremely enriched by many Art teachers, Principals, Administrators such as Mary Ley, Samantha Davis, Aurelia Cole, Lucressie McGriff, Sebrina Banks, and Lucressie McGriff. I have found teaching art and digital techniques very rewarding. Some challenging things for me as an art educator have been the classroom discipline, however, this was a learning process and it has become valuable to me that I am able to positively influence our future generation. As I work on my Master’s degree, I share many things with my students and I let them know it is ok to make a mistake. I also show them that I care, even if it is through discipline techniques as we have twenty-two cultures at our school and not everyone gets along so easily. Sharing stories from the workplace helps to prepare them for life. ................
