Accomplishments of

Dr. Michael D. Sevilla

Michael D. Sevilla, Professor of Chemistry, has achieved international recognition for his work on the radiation chemistry of biological molecules. He has also been a versatile and effective teacher and a respected academic leader as Chair of the Chemistry Department and as acting Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Professor Sevilla’s research has been funded ever since he arrived on the Oakland University campus in 1970. His grants from external sources have totaled nearly

$4 million and have supported research that has led to the publication of 140 papers in leading journals and 150 talks at national and international professional conferences. His sterling reputation among his peers is reflected in his selection as chair of the Gordon Research Conference on Radiation Chemistry in 1998 and his election as president of the Radiation Research Society. Many students have developed research and laboratory skills with state-of-the-art instrumentation by becoming part of Professor Sevilla’s extensive funded research.

In order to study the fundamental chemical effects of radiation, Professor Sevilla uses electron spin resonance to evaluate changes in the purine and pyrimidine bases of the DNA molecule. His research is characterized by rigorous quantitative analysis and conceptual coherence. In addition to making important contributions to basic science, his research has implications for the study of diseases that may arise from oxidative damage such as cancer and macular degeneration.

Professor Sevilla’s colleagues express deep admiration for his effective leadership of the Chemistry Department during a period of critical growth and his dedicated service to colleagues and students in addition to his prodigious research undertakings. As a classroom teacher of chemistry at all levels, he is widely admired by students despite maintaining challenging and rigorous standards of excellence.

Professor Sevilla’s accomplishments in research, teaching, and service have established him as an exemplary member of the university community and exceed the benchmark for recognition as a Distinguished Professor.
