126460-10753100The Science Club 2016/2017 |Budhanilkantha School KathmanduMakerspace in Nepali School4918710-44153700Project InnovationProject Innovation is designed to be the foundation; through which students of Budhanilkantha School can take a huge leap in the field of Science and Technology. Through this project, we expect that the innovative ideas of the students can be put into wise use by converting them into effective and efficient projectsIn the present context, the effort of the students is not enough in comparison to other institutions when it comes to science and technology. The students lack the preliminary skills and abilities to try out their interests and curiosities in this field. Furthermore, there is very limited platform for those who are interested. So, through this project we aspire to provide a reliable platform to young innovative minds of Budhanilkantha School so that their talents can be materialized into something creative. In the long term, we believe this project can be passed to successive batches of students. Therefore, the main aim of this project is to establish a Makerspace (a platform where Makers can come and do their projects) where our students can freely try out their experiments, and DIY ( Do it yourself) projects. The following pages will introduce you to the layout of Makerspace and its operation details.4782820-61002300Makerspace in Budhanilkantha SchoolWhen young, everyone is a Maker, and they don’t actually need any organized space to make things. Unscrewing the old electronics, playing with the tools and building up something with locally available materials is a very common thing for young people. Apparently, that creativity and ingenuity gets blunt as they grow. For young students, they don’t have access to the enough resources for their project; there are circumstances when tools aren’t available or they are unaffordable. Other times, students don’t have strong fundamentals to work on their project. What if there was a platform with adequate tools and resources for interested students to build their project where a certain group of students can share the tools? That will also allow the beginners to learn things from others. Moreover, if there is a committee that looks after it, they can also provide formal sessions to the juniors to help them build a strong fundamental enabling the students to build things on their own, This is what a Makerspace is!Makerspace is a platform (usually a space i.e. a room) where anyone can make things through the use of the available materials. With this realization, the Science Club has taken an initiative to establish one of these in our school as well. 4850553-67796900Makerspace, a necessity!Development is a need, and it doesn’t need an explanation. Beautiful things needn’t be complex, the art of giving ordinary materials into a dazzling shape is called creativity, ‘a key component for the birth of any miracle’. A water bottle in the hand of an adult doesn’t seem as beautiful as it seems in a 10-year-old boy’s hand who has transformed it into a water boat. But here is thing, things aren’t limited to a water bottle, there are kids doing projects like “using coins as a battery to light LED”, “potato cells”, “Homemade RC cars” etc. These are the most common projects among the kids. Take a group of students, more than a half of them have done this, not just because the kids were too keen but also because these projects were easy to do and the tools were accessible to almost everyone. But apparently, majority of the students haven’t done any projects complicated than this. Not because they lacked the interest, but because the tools weren’t accessible; not everything is locally available. Moreover, they are expensive to buy for single use. Most of the children leave their project at the half done, because when they encounter a problem and there is barely anyone to guide them through. For whatever be the reason, makers shouldn’t stop making. People don’t need much to make things. Just like a flower that just needs the right environment and it grows so beautiful just on its own, the young minds too just need an atmosphere to work out their curiosity. Once they are given the opportunity, it shouldn’t be surprising to expect the young minds creating wonderful things. Let’s just give them the opportunity. 5054600-50905800Proposed ActivitiesThe establishment of Makerspace is aimed to all group of students so, this will include involvement of students from each class and from every house. These group of interested students will be formed into various committees about which will be discussed in the later pages. Then a time table will be published depending upon the number of interested students. During the allocated time, the students will be guided in the Makerspace as follow.Providing Sessions:Firstly, to establish the basic concepts and to develop required skills, sessions will be provided to junior students of the school. Skills for using tools and conduction of simple experiments will be imparted in these sessions for young students so that they can develop their own experiments later. Along with this, some concepts of programming will also be given to the students through graphical programming tutorial software like Scratch. These sessions will be mostly provided by the senior students and sometimes by the guest from other institutions.Giving supported environment for experimentation:After the sessions, rooms allocated for our activities will be opened in for anyone interested. The room is to be a well?equipped environment for experimentation. It will always be monitored by one of the project developers but the students are allowed to do and experiment any? thing they like. Furthermore, they will be supervised on how their experiment can be improved. There will be no restrictions for trying new things (unless they are truly meaningless) so that students can learn in an environment without fear of failure. The equipment inside the room will also be used in a responsible manner.4919134-64494800Operation of Makerspace1657350202928Science ClubScience Club31285544490400114263744540003663315300355ANNUAL EVENTS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES00ANNUAL EVENTS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES268061234678MAKERSPACE0MAKERSPACEObjectives:To provide a strong platform for transforming the interest of students in the field of Science and Technology into tangible and reliable result. To help organize their ideas into well-designed experiments and its documentation by teaching fundamental approaches to acquire them.To create a unique foundation such that, any idea in the students’ mind can be immediately worked out to quench the curiosity. After its establishment, Makerspace will be the Property of the Budhanilkantha School but will be looked after by the Science Club. For its unpunctuated operation, a ‘Makers’ Committee, Budhanilkantha School’ will be formed and would be run as follows:4715933-47561500Committee Members:All interested members from Science Club.A representative from each house. (All houses will be included irrespective to any basis).Advisory TeamMakers’ committee members of outgoing batches will remain in the Makerspace Advisory team for 2 years from the year of the year of their departure.Mr. K KhulalAny teacher who led Science Club as a coordinator after the establishment of Makerspace, who is no longer a coordinator of the Science Club. The ‘Maker Committee, Budhanilkantha School’ will be led by a ‘Maker Committee Leader’. The leader may be chosen from classes (9-12/A2) [may as well be from outside the Science Club] and will be appointed by the Maker Committee coordinators.Maker Committee Coordinators: Teacher Coordinators of Science Club (Mr. HRT and Mr. TG for the year of 2017)The coordinators will have special right that they may raise any question to the Makers’ committee in case of any doubt or suspect. They will guide as well as supervise the Makers’ Committee. In case of any dis-satisfaction with the Makers’ committee leader, they may as well appoint a new leader for the same year.4682067-50905800The house representatives for the Maker Committee will form a ‘Maker sub-committee’ for their house, which will be a communication medium between the Maker Committee and Maker sub-committee to get any feedbacks as well as to understand the interest of students so that sessions can be designed on the basis of their interest. The new ‘Maker Committee’ will be formed annually.Makers’ Subcommittee:Any student interested in joining the Makerspace in order to participate in the sessions or build their own project can instantly join the Makers’ Subcommittee Team by informing their House Representative. The representative will then inform the changes in membership to the Makers’ Committee. Any interested student can join the Makers’ Subcommittee at any time of their interest.4309110-50905800Regarding the use of MakerspaceDepending upon the number of interested students, the Makers’ committee will schedule time table for providing sessions to the Makers’ subcommittee where the students will be taught about the innovative approach to applied science and will be given time to perform experiments related to the topic. Besides the sessions, any interested student can reach the Makers’ committee to work on the project of their interest using the materials available in the Makerspace. All students must submit detailed information about their project in order to use the Makerspace.A full documentation of any project done in the Makerspace must be submitted to the Makers’ committee. A report of any uncompleted project must also be submitted. Please refer below for further instruction in regard to project documentation. The Makerspace will be opened throughout the year and would be open to students in alternative days or daily basis, except on especial occasions. It will be monitored by at least one member from Makers’ committee. No materials from the Makerspace will be allowed to be taken out of the Makerspace (except on very special occasions with recorded permission from the Makers’ Committee or the session In-charge), the student himself/herself will be responsible for the material being lost or damaged.Since the Makerspace is the property of school and hence the property of students, the students need to be responsible regarding the wise use of the materials, any irresponsible behavior will be punished.4919133-50905800 Project DocumentationAny project made by the students using the resources of Makerspace must be documented and posted in the online blog in the name of the Makerspace. The documentation of the project must include the following details:Name of the project.Name of the students involved in the project.Materials used.Number of working hours spent.Working mechanisms (the student needn’t do any further research for writing working mechanism, he/she may write it to the level of his/her understanding.)Photos (optional)*No students will be subjected to any charges for the use of the Makerspace.4495800-52641500Finance All the finances of the Makerspace will be dealt by the Science Club not by the Makers’ committee. But still Science Club will need to deal with the finances regarding the Makerspace separately, for this purpose a separate bank account will be opened in name of Makerspace. ALL FUNDS OF MAKERSPACE IS THE FUND OF SCIENCE CLUB, BUT no budget from that account can be used for any other purposes (except for MAKERSPACE), not even in critical circumstances. In case of need of any item that has to be bought for the Makerspace, a request has to be made to the science club, then the club will deal with it (using its fund), i.e. buy the materials and post the expenditures. For making all the transactions transparent, an online blog/webpage will be opened in the name of Makerspace, where all the records of the financial transactions must be posted. Any “Wish List”, “The available materials (especially the worthy ones)” will also be posted in the blog so that anyone interested can donate the materials or cash to the Makerspace. Their donations will also be posted in the page. 4613910-53467000BudgetOverviewThis document covers a particular Makerspace module or specialization and includes a description, considerations such as space or utilities, and lists of tools and materials appropriate to be used with the tools.WorkspaceThe working environment of the space creating the foundation for a safe, comfortable and clean working environmentGeneralTools and materials common among and across modules that are useful on a wide range of projectsElectronics and ComputerUsing electricity from the basics of circuit design through more advanced microcontrollers, robotics other electromechanical creations and the hardware and software necessary for modern planning, design and fabrication in computer technology.4783243-44132500Available in the Makerspace now?Hammer ?Tool Set?Scissor?Fevicol?Glue stick?Duct Tapes?Bar Magnets?Soldiering set ?Glue gun?Hacksaw?Stand and clamps?Candles?Wrench?Screwdriver Set?Propellers?Wheels?Arduinos?Raspberry PI ?LCD Screen for R?PI?Arduino Modules?Multimeters?Conducting wires?Crocodile clips?Rheostat?Cells and batteries?LED?Resistor pack?Circuit board?High rpm motors?Low rpm motors?Transistors Set?Laser light?Buzzer?Power pack?Driller?Grinder4978400-61023500FundsBesides the aforementioned materials which we have already collected, we are in need of the following materials/funds for the Makerspace.Workspace?Carpeting- Rs 8,000?Furniture- Rs 10,000-Miscellaneous Rs 5,000Electronics & ComputersItemQty-Desktop Computers- 4Since the Makerspace is an ever-longing project that is aimed to last for many years, it will need a strong fund for its operation. Moreover, Makerspace, being a platform where we would like provide the best possible opportunities to every interested student without charging them any fees, we will need a fund to upgrade and buy different materials throughout the year.Beside the funds for the initial startup, we will also be needing a large fund to support the project for years. For this purpose, we would like to set up a separate fund acting as a strong base to continue the Makerspace going for forever. 4783243-61065800Sustainability FundBeside the funds for the initial startup, we will also be needing a large fund to support the project for years.
