Mathematics Expectations and Procedures

7th Grade Mathematics Expectations

Welcome to math class. I am looking forward to a great year. This year we are going to focus on the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. I want all of my students to be successful in math. I have found that students are successful in my math class when they:

• Come to class prepared. This means they have their supplies (textbook, binder, calculator and pencil).

• Come to class with their homework completed.

• Come to tutorial, before school, or after school for extra help.

• Come to class prepared to participate in class discussion and ask questions.

• Come to class wanting to do their best.

If you follow these simple steps, I expect each one of you to have a very successful year. Supplies

Each block for math class, you will need your math book, binder, loose leaf paper, calculator, pencils, pens, assignment pad and homework.

You should have all of these supplies with you each day when you come to class. THINK AHEAD, because you won't be allowed to return to your locker for forgotten supplies once class has begun.

General Classroom Procedures

Be prepared. Have all needed supplies and completed assignments with you each day.

Arrive to class in a timely manner. Please try to limit your time in the hallways and at your locker. I have a limited amount of time in class so getting to class in a timely manner is important.

Be safe. Keep aisles clear of books and other items so the room can be vacated quickly if needed. Please put your books under your chair.

Think first. Before you say or do anything, ask yourself if it's appropriate. If it isn't, don't do it!

Consider others the same way you want to be considered.

Raise your hand if you want to be recognized.

Use pencil for all of your work.

Do your best. You won't be satisfied if you don't, and I won't accept anything less.

Grades

Your grade will be based on your performance in several different areas: homework, binder checks, quizzes, projects and tests.

Class Preparedness: Students will be awarded points for being prepared for class. This means they have pencils, a calculator, their textbooks, binders and completed homework each time they come to class.

Homework*: Homework is assigned every block and will be due at the beginning of the next block. Because we meet every other day, I HAVE to assign homework on Fridays, but the Friday homework isn’t due until Tuesday. An assignment will be given each day that we meet to be completed outside of class. All homework should be completed in your binder and is always due at the beginning of the next class period. All homework requires work to be shown when necessary. A simple rule to remember is: if you add, subtract, multiply or divide to arrive at an answer, work must be shown. On most days, students will display their work and homework answers on the board for other students to correct their homework. This is why it is important for a student to complete their homework and to show their work. It is the student’s responsibility to complete homework. If a student chooses not to do the daily homework, he/she will see the effect on his/her performance on tests and quizzes. The student’s binder is usually checked on the days of tests and quizzes.

Students are required to take notes during class. The class notes are a useful tool so the students can refer to them to see how work should be shown or they can be used as a study guide. Throughout the year, I will role model for the students how to take notes.

Homework will be graded on the basis of effort and completeness rather than how many are correct on a particular page. On most days, students will display their work and homework answers on the board for other students to correct their homework. Many times a lengthy discussion will take place over certain questions on homework. Homework will be accepted late only because of absence from school. If you forget your binder in your locker, you will be required to come in after school or during tutorial to show me the completed assignment and correct it.

*In previous years, the goal of homework was to have all of the problems completed and this year a slightly different approach will be taken. As a math teacher I value process as well as product, for that reason it helps me with teaching and re-teaching to see where students are struggling. If a student is having difficulty with his/her homework, it is okay to leave a few blanks, but it is asked that he/she ask questions in class the next day on those problems that were left blank. I will share this information with all of the students and I would ask that as parents, you re-emphasize this approach at home. If you have any questions regarding this please feel free to call and I will be glad to discuss this with you.

Binder Checks: The most important part of your homework grade is the binder check. Binder checks are to make sure the students are doing their homework and to keep them organized. Students will be receiving handouts, completing homework, and taking class notes, so it is important to keep all of the papers organized and in one place. Binder checks will be two to three times per chapter and the students will be given a list for the order of the binder. Each time you have a quiz or a test, a binder check will take place. On the day of a quiz or a test you MUST bring your binder to class. If you forget your binder, it will be counted late and points will be deducted. You will NOT be allowed to return to your locker to get your binder.

Quizzes: There are usually one or two quizzes given per chapter. Quizzes are generally announced, but there may be a pop quiz once in awhile. Graded quizzes are returned, usually a few days after they are given. The quizzes are discussed in class and students are expected to see the teacher before or after school for questions and or help pertaining to the quiz. Quizzes are sent home to be signed by the parent and then returned in a timely manner.

Tests: Tests will be given at the completion of each chapter. Because they cover a substantial amount of material, tests will be announced in advance, and the material to be covered in class. Students will be expected to do the assigned reviews and to study for the tests.

Absences

If you are absent from class, be sure to find out all assignments you missed. It is your responsibility to find out what work was missed and make that work up. The student can do the following:

a. Check my webpage on the JP Case website

b. E-mail me at skodidek@frsd.k12.nj.us

c. Have a homework buddy in the class and call the homework buddy.

d. Visit my classroom during tutorial time to get any worksheets or notes that were missed.

If a worksheet is the homework, I will be happy to give it to a friend to bring home. When the student has completed the make –up work, they will need to come in check in the homework. If they do not do this, they will receive zero credit for the homework during their absence. If a student is absent for more than two or three days it is a good idea to come in before school to talk with the teacher. Quizzes and tests missed due to absence will not be completed during class time, but will be made up by appointment with your teacher (generally either before school or during tutorial).

Extra Help

There are several opportunities for you to receive extra help. A student can come in during tutorial. This may not be the best time because it is not a quiet environment. If you wish to come in before school, you must arrange the time with Mrs. Kodidek, I am more than happy to set up a time to work with your child to help them.

Please return the next page to Mrs. Kodidek. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at 908-284-5100 extension 4074 or skodidek@frsd.k12.nj.us.
