• Quotation marks represent spoken words
and titles of minor works
Examples:
Bill said, “Make sure you use quotation marks correctly.”
My favorite song is “Shimmer” performed by Fuel.
USING QUOTITION MARKS WITH OTHER PUNTUATION
• There are six types of punctuation used with quotation marks
1. Commas
2. Periods
Periods and commas always go inside quotation marks
3. Colons
4. Semicolons
Put colons and semicolons outside quotation marks
5. Question marks
6. Exclamation points
Question marks and exclamation point go inside the quotation marks if they apply to the quoted portion, but they go outside if they apply to the entire sentence
THINGS TO REMEMBER
• Do not punctuate indirect quotes
• Use a comma to introduce a direct quotation
• It is possible to use single quotations inside double quotations
• If a quote is separated in a sentence, do not capitalize the first word beginning the second half of the quote
• Do not close the quotation marks until the entire quote is finished. Each sentence does not need opening and closing marks.
