Course Number: ITSE 1356

Course Title: Extensible Markup Language (XML)

Course Description: Introduction of skills and practices related to Extensible Markup Language (XML). Includes Document Type Definition (DTD), well-formed and valid XML documents, XML schemes, and Extensible Style Language (XSL).

Course Credit Hours: 3

Lecture Hours: 2

Lab Hours: 2

Prerequisite: ITSE 1311 or consent of Instructor or Department Chair

Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to do all of the following:

1. List the primary design goals that prompted the World Wide Web consortium to develop extensible markup language (xml).

2. Identify available integrated development environment (ide) applications to generate xml files used in a web development project.

3. Recognize and understand the development from documents to markup and meta-languages.

4. Demonstrate an understanding of the xml document object model (dom).

5. Recognize and understand the anatomy of an xml document.

6. Identify document type definitions (dtd) and how to create and use document type definitions.

7. Recognize and understand the use of cascading style sheets (css) with xml documents.

8. Recognize and understand how to work with namespaces.

9. Describe various methods of binding xml data.

10. Recognize and understand the manipulation of data using xml technology.

11. Recognize and understand the relationship between xml and an xml schema.

12. Define the purpose of extensible markup language with its relationship to content management.

13. Discuss the change from static web development to dynamic web development.

14. Discuss advanced application of xml using other technologies.
