Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for your enquiry about our Correspondence Courses. Calligraphy, Watercolour Painting and Drawing are all fascinating hobbies which can be studied in the comfort of your own home. There are so many applications for your Calligraphic skills - greetings cards, wedding invitations, party invitations, labels, menus, bookmarks, personalised initials, commemorative scrolls, letterheads, logos - an endless list. Watercolour painting is a favourite with everyone and Drawing - the foundation of so many creative pursuits is a fascinating and satisfying skill to learn. So many people think that the ability to draw or paint is something one is born with. If you enrol on any of our courses you will soon discover that this is not the case. If you have the ability to hold a pencil or brush and have reasonable eyesight you can learn to write calligraphically, draw or paint!

All the courses are designed so that they can be studied at the student's own pace. They can be studied by beginners or those with more experience. Each stage of all the courses can be studied as separate units or as a Combined Comprehensive Course.

There is also an option for students to choose a Self Study plan or a Tutor Assessed plan. The former would entail the same amount of work but it would not be eligible for the tutor's assessment and constructive comments. On the Tutor Assessed plan you would receive constant support, encouragement and guidance throughout your study period. This aspect of the course is always commented upon very favourably by students who find it most helpful.* On completion of the Comprehensive Courses a certification of completion Diploma will be sent to you.

Details of options available to you are listed in the following sheets. A brief synopsis of each course is outlined separately to help you decide which would be most suitable for your requirements. Whatever you decide, you will discover that there are so many exciting possibilities which will become apparent to you once you begin to practice these delightful pursuits.

I look forward to enrolling you as a student. If there is anything else you wish to know about the courses, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Jenny Storey

* I have received hundreds of letters written by students since the courses began in 1990, which describe their delight in their new found skills as well as how much they have enjoyed the courses. These testimonials can be viewed by arrangement.

DRAWING FOR PLEASURE CORRESPONDENCE COURSES

CONTENT OF THE COURSES.

* PART ONE:

This consists of eight exclusive copyright lessons and assignments. It is designed for the student who would dearly love to draw but who has never felt able to. It is also very appropriate for the student who has had some experience of drawing but lacks the confidence in their ability to develop their work further. On the Tutor Assessed plan students receive constant support

This part of the course serves as an introduction and deals with equipment and materials necessary (not expensive) as well as introducing the skills necessary to draw with confidence. Each lesson has an illustrated text which incorporates several exercises to practise throughout the lesson. The lessons are structured so that the student begins to 'see' and perceive objects in a completely different way enabling he/she to interpret this perception into a realistic drawing.

The basis of success in all artwork is the ability to draw with confidence and competence. To try to paint in oils, watercolour or acrylics before having developed a competence in drawing, is like trying to run before you can walk! Specific areas are covered such as Materials and Getting Started, Developing a Sketchbook, Developing the Ability to 'see', the Importance of Negative Shapes and Spaces, Pen and Ink work, Perspective, Light and Shade and Tonal values and Scraperboard work. At the end of these lessons you will be ready to progress to more specific areas of drawing and to develop a particular interest of your own.

At the end of each lesson there is an assignment which you will complete and send to the tutor who will assess it carefully and return it with practical comments, guidance and encouragement together with suggestions for improvement in any particular problem areas.

* PART TWO:

This part of the course builds on the skills learned in the previous lessons and extends them further. It is advisable to have studied Part 1 before embarking on this part of the course because of this. Another eight exclusive copyright lessons and assignments will cover specific areas of drawing such as; Flower drawing, Animal drawing, drawing Children, Portraits, Proportion, Figure drawing and Landscapes. The final assignment will be chosen by you and will concentrate on an aspect of work which you have studied and would like to develop further.

This part of the course will encourage students to extend their ability to draw and to experiment with different subject matter. As in the previous lessons, each lesson will have an assignment which will be sent to your tutor who will assess your work and return it with constructive comments. If a particular interest is perceived by the tutor, the student will be encouraged to develop this aspect. There will be considerable emphasis placed on producing finished pieces of work to a high standard.

Each of the sixteen lessons will involve you in practical hands-on experience in the form of exercises or projects and will finish with an assignment which will be forwarded to your personal tutor. These will be returned to you with constructive comments and suggestions which will help you in your study of this fascinating skill. (Please note: if you elect to choose the Self Study option this service will not be available.)

As a teacher and a Further Education lecturer I am aware of the drawbacks of having insufficient time to give everyone enough individual attention. With this Correspondence course you can be certain of your work receiving undivided attention. Each stage of the course is explained in depth within every lesson and this builds on the knowledge previously learned in earlier lessons. If any problems are encountered you may write or telephone at any time during the course. I will always try to help.

YOU MAY SELECT EITHER OR BOTH OF THE COURSES AND THERE IS A FURTHER OPTION OF THE TUTOR ASSESSED PLAN OR SELF STUDY PLAN. PLEASE SEE ENROLMENT FORM FOR DETAILS.

WATERCOLOUR CORRESPONDENCE COURSES

CONTENT OF THE COURSES

PART ONE:

This consists of four exclusive copyright lessons and assignments. I have designed this course for the student who has always wanted to paint in watercolour as well as those who already have experience. This part of the course begins with an introduction which deals with equipment and materials necessary. Practical exercises introduce the concept of colour mixing to obtain clarity and vibrant hues so that your paintings will be full of life and the true beauty of the medium will shine through your work.

Techniques necessary for the application of colour will be explained so that you will be able to experience the true delights of this wonderful medium. Ways to avoid mixing ‘muddy’ colours are considered at length as well as experimenting with different ways of applying paint. Methods to enable you to produce a clean, vital and vibrant painting will be explained in a practical manner.

Painting from life without drawing is encouraged by the use of demonstrated washes so that the student is equipped to progress to interesting compositions. Ideas for working outdoors and/or indoors will provide plenty of inspiration for every student. The weather will not stop you painting!

A series of well structured exercises will form the basis of the lessons each of which culminates in a choice of Assignment. You will complete your assignment and send it to the tutor who will assess it carefully and return it with practical comments, guidance and encouragement together with suggestions for improvement in any particular problem areas. Also any areas which a student particularly wishes to develop will be encouraged.
