We are amazed at the growth they have made academically, socially, and emotionally.Thank you, parents, for helping us to make this a great year at Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary School!Summer Recommendations:Read to your child every day and also have your child read independently each day.Write about experiences (vacations, camps, relatives, etc.). They should use their kindergarten sight words in their writing. It is fun to keep a summer journal of experiences.Practice math skills: addition, subtraction, identifying coins and counting money, creating & identifying patterns, measuring with non-standard & standard units, identifying & describing two-and three-dimensional shapes, & counting objects.Be sure to visit the Hendrick Hudson Free Library for story time.Enjoy family time together, have fun, and be safe!Have a wonderful summer! We look forward to seeing you next year! The Kindergarten TeamFirst GradeWhat a wonderful year in first grade it has been! We have worked hard in all of our subjects and have learned many new things along the way.In Math, we are wrapping up Module 6 by reviewing word problems. Remember to use the RDW process as a strategy to solve. We have also learned the value of a penny, nickel, dime and quarter. Ask us to identify them at home! We reviewed adding and subtracting two digit numbers using number bonds or tens and ones pictures. Please continue to keep up your math skills over the summer to get ready for second grade! In Reader’s Workshop, we are studying the children’s author, Kevin Henkes. We are noticing his writing style and learning about the characters in his books. We are discussing the characters and the problems they come across as well as how they get out of their problem. At the end, we talk about the lesson we learned from the story. In Writer's Workshop, we are wrapping up our Realistic Fiction Unit. We have practiced writing series books and are taking our own characters on adventures through our own writing. We remember to use punctuation and use all we have learned in first grade to spell tricky words. Please encourage your child to write over the summer and not to forget important mechanics such as capitals, stop signs and finger spaces!Within our Economics unit in Social Studies, we are discussing wants and needs. We can now identify the difference between something we want and something we need to survive. We know that adults go to work in order to make money to buy things that their families need.We will have a visit from the Hen Hud Free Library on June 18th and they will talk to us about summer reading. It is important to keep up your reading stamina over the summer so that you are ready for second grade! We will also have a Spelling Bee and Math Bee this month! Good luck to all the participants!Thank you for a fantastic year in first grade! We are sending home some summer work that incorporates reading and math skills. If your child brings this back to a first grade teacher in the fall, we will give them 10 SOAR tickets to start off in second grade! On June 14th, the students spent the day learning all about Native Americans. They attended workshops and activities throughout the day. Our gym was turned into a Native American museum with an authentic setup of a longhouse. Students played Native American games and had stories told to them. In the afternoon they learned about the Native American government and made clay pots as well as sang a traditional Indian song. As the end of the school year draws near, we would like to thank you for all your support and guidance in your child’s education. We know our students worked real hard and we are very proud of each and every one of them.Fifth GradeCongratulations, Class of 2019! All students completed research projects using resources from our database portal. Students will continue to have library classes until the last day of school. During these classes, students will engage in small group challenges and learning opportunities ranging from coding Ozobots to Escape Rooms. There will be no more books circulating until next school year.19335751036955If you come across any books that belong to the B-V Library, please return them! Notices will be sent home to families of students who have lost books. Please plan to replace any books that have gone missing. Of course, mistakes can be made - so if you receive a letter regarding a book your child returned or never checked out, please let me know immediately. Most importantly, keep reading and have a wonderful summer. See you in September!ArtOur students enjoyed a very creative and productive year. They have developed the necessary skills and techniques in drawing, painting, sculpting and craftwork to grow artistically and to successfully master the unique challenges of visual art. We had fun learning about different types of art processes and learned about the significance of art in cultures, in celebration and of community. They have been encouraged to use their imagination and personal expressions that reflect their unique perspective of their world and all while having fun too!?The arts and humanities teach us who we are and what we can be. They are given a choice of three activities and each student gets a vote. This method of empowering the students connects with our district goal of emphasizing social emotional learning. In addition to the Choice days, our older students have enjoyed time outside playing Capture the Footballs on the field and Four Square on our newly painted courts.2243455193865500285751938655004619625194183000Our younger students have been busy playing tagging and fleeing game such as Buffalo Bill Tag outside on the field and Jurassic Park Tag in the gymnasium. Some of our K-2 classes competed in Hula Hut relays where teams had to build hula huts with hula hoops and complete a task as a team. Examples of these tasks included having everyone on the team crawl through it and also working as a team to carry the entire hula hut to the other side of the gym. The final challenge was to fit everyone into the hula hut! Everyone had a load of fun and practiced working together. Each school year goes faster than the last. Wishing all of our B-V families a happy and healthy summer.SpeechThis has been my home for 33 years. I have had the pleasure of working with so many families in the B-V schools. Throughout the year, we have gone into the classrooms to discuss problem-solving and feelings through the Second Step program. This program will continue next year in the fall.?Dr. Heather Wynne, PsychologistMs. Lisa Richmond, Social WorkerResource RoomYour summer days are numbered — in more ways than one! Use these nine tricks to keep your child’s math skills sharp, even when school is out.Math is everywhere — some might even say it’s inescapable. And we’re not just talking about those ubiquitous addition and subtraction worksheets. Math is at the grocery store, in your cupcake recipe, and powering those baseball stats. Summer is a great time to demonstrate how math relates to the real world, so use these ideas to keep your child learning.A Cold OneA lemonade stand is a classic summertime activity for kids, and math is needed to keep it up and running. Younger kids can work on measuring and money-counting by mixing the lemonade and making change for customers. Older kids can be in charge of setting the price by determining the cost per serving and setting a profit margin.Sports SpectatorThe next time you take your child to a baseball game, add in a few math games while you cheer your favorite team. Have your child play umpire and ask her to keep count of each batter’s balls and strikes. Additionally, she can keep track of the outs every inning, and how many innings are left before the game is over. Ask her questions, such as which inning marks the halfway point in the game, and how many runs the losing team needs to catch up. If a player on one of the teams is close to breaking a home run record, have your child figure out how many more home runs he needs to meet and break the record.Kitchen FunIf you’ve got a sous chef on your hands, there is no better place than the kitchen to turn cooking and baking into a math lesson. Give your younger child tasks like sorting ingredients or counting how many eggs you need for a certain recipe. Older kids can work on number recognition and fractions by helping to measure ingredients, turning the oven to the correct temperature (with adult supervision), and dividing up the servings.Countdown to FunPool parties, picnics, and cookouts are summer activities to look forward to. If your child has a fun event coming up, start a countdown. The lesson is two-fold: It’ll improve her time-telling skills, and it’ll help pass the time until the event. For example, if she has a friend’s birthday party coming up in four days, ask her how long that is in days, hours, and minutes. You can even start a countdown for each of these.Neighborhood WalkTake a walk around your neighborhood or a local park, and look for different shapes and patterns in nature. For example, how far apart are the telephone poles from each other in your neighborhood? Are they all the same distance, or do they vary? Is there a pattern? This lesson can also be done with trees, fire hydrants, or flowers in a garden. In addition, ask your child to find a living thing that is a square, rectangle, or circle. With so much to see and find, he’ll never know that you’re working on his geometry skills. Literacy TeamPreventing the Summer Slide!BY SCHOLASTIC PARENTS STAFFMany children forget some of what they've learned or slip out of practice during the summer months. Try these strategies to help your reader improve her reading during the summer and beyond:Six books to summer success: Research shows that reading just SIX books during the summer may keep a struggling reader from regressing. When choosing the six, be sure that they are just right — not too hard and not too easy. Take advantage of your local library. Ask for help selecting books that match your child's age, interests, and abilities. Libraries often run summer reading programs that motivate kids to read. Read something every day: Encourage your child to take advantage of every opportunity to read. Make them throughout the day:Morning: The newspaper — even if it is just the comics or today's weather.Daytime: Schedules, TV guides, magazines, online resources, etc. For example, if your daughter likes the food channel, help her look for a recipe on the network's Website — then cook it together for more reading practice.Evening: End the day by having your child read to you from the book he is currently reading (one of the six books, above). Have him rehearse a paragraph, page, or chapter before reading to you. Rereading will help him be more fluent — read at an appropriate speed, correctly, and with nice expression.3Keep reading aloud: Reading aloud benefits all children and teens, especially those who struggle. One benefit is that you can read books your child can't, so she will build listening comprehension skills with grade-level and above books. This will increase her knowledge and expand her experience with text, so that she will do better when she reads on her own.Math and Spelling BeesSpelling BeesKindergarten Spelling Bee Champions(1st Place – Charles F, 2nd Place – Matthew A.,3rd Place – Samantha B.)1st grade Spelling Bee Champions (1st Place – Felix R., 2nd Place – Gabriel P., 3rd Place – Emme S.)2nd grade Spelling Bee Champions (1st Place – Sebastian C., 2nd Place – Jovani B., 3rd Place – Aiden S.)1593851098553rd grade Spelling Bee Champions(1st Place – Colin F., 2nd Place – Justin C.,3rd Place – Cameron S.)4th grade Spelling Bee Champions(1st Place – Luke C., 2nd Place – Peter W., 3rd Place – Kaitlyn B.)5th grade Spelling Bee Champions(1st Place – Matthew M., 2nd Place - Aaryan S., 3rd Place – Erick L.)4615815756412000Math BeesKindergarten Math Bee Champions(1st Place – Sawyer B., 2nd Place – Matthew A., 3rd Place – Penelope L.)1st grade Math Bee Champions(1st Place – Lucas V., 2nd Place – Dylan R., 3rd Place – Laura N.)53022515303502nd grade Math Bee Champions(1st Place – Gavin F., 2nd Place – Suri T., 3rd Place – Addison S.)485775121285003rd grade Math Bee Champions(1st Place – Evan R., 2nd Place – Jaydin L.,4946651885953rd Place – Phoenix S.)4th grade Math Bee Champions(1st Place – Everett S., 2nd Place – William M., 3rd Place – Lael R.)7023103492505th grade Math Bee Champions5340357048500(1st Place – Alex C., 2nd Place – Kate S., 3rd Place – George K.) ................
