THE PAGEANTPrior to each pageant, a dressing room will be available for contestants to get ready for the pageant. Inside the room will be hairdressers and makeup artists to help with age appropriate styling and makeup, all free of charge. Girls are asked to not use the area before 1 ? hours before their specific pageant to allow those who are competing ahead of them to have plenty of room to get dressed, etc. Hair appointments are not necessary, and will be available for each group during their time before their pageant. There is NO FEE for entering the pageant. Participants are not required, nor expected to spend significant money on their apparel. Judging WILL NOT be on the apparel worn by contestants. Each girl will appear on stage twice as a contestant.PLEASE NOTE: The first category this year will be called “BLACK AND WHITE”. Each girl will appear on stage wearing something black and/or white. It can be anything as long as it is black/white or both! Dressy, casual, pajamas, sport uniform, costume…whatever you choose to wear. Girls will not be judged on the apparel but rather on their personal appearance on stage while wearing their selection. The second appearance on stage will be “DRESSY”, where each girl can wear a dress of their choosing, from Sunday best to formal. During this time on stage, each girl will be asked a question by the emcee. For those that are non-verbal, provisions will be made for them to ‘answer’ in their own unique way. (i.e. they may nod, clap, use an apparatus to help them talk, or even perform a skill of some type.) You will have a place on the application to help us decide the best question or opportunity for each girl. Due to the staging this year, contestants will be expected to appear on stage alone or with the help of our pageant assistants who specialize in working with those who have special needs, as well as their equipment. We ask that no family members go up on stage during the pageant. Participants will be able to meet and become acquainted with our assistants prior to the competition. You will have a place to indicate on your entry form any special help you will need. Please remember that the decisions of the judges are final. They have been carefully selected and instructed on how they are to judge the contest fairly and in relationship to each individuals disability. Remember that all girls will go home with an award (those not winning the Miss Shining Star title are crowned princesses).TALENT COMPETITIONA talent presentation is totally optional for all participants. Those who wish to compete in talent, however, are welcomed to do so. This year’s format will be different than previous years. Preliminaries will be held Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in the ball room. A variety of dresses have been donated to the pageant by various individuals for girls who may need help in securing a dress. The sizes vary and may not be available for everyone, however you are welcomed to come on the designated day to try on dresses if available in your size. Because they are available strictly by what has been donated, not all sizes are represented. Open Doors TN is thrilled to host the Miss Shining Star pageant each year. They go to great lengths to keep the cost minimal, and work all year raising money to provide this opportunity to the girls at no cost. In raising the money for the pageant, Open Doors TN informs all potential contributors that they will be helping to provide this pageant free of cost to the girls. With this in mind, we ask that you refrain from setting up “gofundme” or other types of financial accounts to raise money for the pageant which ask for donations to pay for their participation as this is confusing for our donors and other competitors. More specifically, please do not use the names of Open Doors TN or Miss Shining Star to publically solicit funds from the public for this pageant.
