Food for Tomorrow hosts food collection at Wegmans

Howard County high school students, along with County Councilmember Mary Kay Sigaty’s office, are holding a Feed A Family, Fill a Ford food drive Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Wegmans in Columbia.

The drive is sponsored by Food for Tomorrow, a program of the Community Action Council of Howard County in partnership with Sigaty’s office, Wegmans and Apple Ford. The drive benefits the Howard County Food Bank. Food for Tomorrow is a student-led project run by Jadon Ramsing of Wilde Lake High School, Matt Keimig of Centennial High School and Ben Fisher of Atholton High School. The three are participating in the Howard County Public School System’s Mentorship Program.

The project focuses on community food drives. Since its inception in 2011, Food for Tomorrow has raised more than $22,000 and five tons of food. The goal for the Wegmans event is 2,000 pounds of food. A second drive will take place June 2 from 12-4 p.m. at the Giant Food in Hickory Ridge.

According to a release from Sigaty’s office, specific food items needed at this time of year are meal makers like pasta, pasta sauce, canned tuna or chicken, Tuna Helper, rice and beans, baking supplies like flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt and cooking oil, breakfast food like cereal, peanut butter, jam, granola bars and canned fruit and baby and personal care items like soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, wipes and diapers.
