Chayaipum)Khon Kaen What was your Final Research/Intervention?(Include: what you did, who you talked with, did you have a presentation? data you collected)We collected data on the access to exercise that women 35+ years had in Lawa Lake. We looked at key factors such as time, cost, environment, availability, and culural influences. We also explored administrative knowledge on diabetes, exercise, and the aerobics class schedule. To gain this information we had semi-structured interviews with women in our target group, Head of the HPH, Head of the VHVs, and 2 VHVs. Additionally, we held two focus groups to get more in-depth information on cultural factors. After collecting, analyzing, and interpreting the data, we developed an intervention that addresses some key results: time, cultural factors, and availability. The intervention has one part focused on only VHVs and one part focused on the target group. What were your final outputs(Include: what did you create, how many, whom did you give it to. If you did a presentation, what was it on, what did you say and who attended?)For our intervention, we created a pamphlet with information regarding diabetes, risk factors, some preventative measures, heart rate goals for exercise, and some exercise examples they can do with simple exercise equipment (that we donated to the HPH). We printed 100 pamphlets and passed them out to the VHVs, the women who attended the session, passed them out door-to-door and left the rest in the HPH. The donated equipment includes 3 jump ropes, 3 hula hoops, 3 resistance bands, and 2 sets of dumbbells (1,2,3 kg). The equipment will be kept at the HPH and can be used at the HPH or checked out by the community members to use at home. Along with the equipment, we also created a poster that shows examples of the exercises they can do with the equipment, similar to those found in the pamphlet. We held two sessions on May 8, 2014. One occurred in the morning with the VHVs where we went through the pamphlet, discussing risk factors and preventative factors, as well as heart rate goals for people exercising and some simple exercises with the equipment. In the afternoon we held a similar session with the target group. In both sessions, the attendees could try out the exercises that we were demonstrating and had the opportunity to ask questions. What was your project timeline?(Your basic schedule and timeframes from your final project experience, Ex: logo creation, Saturday the 1st, 3 hrs)DateTime April 25-26, 2014 Data Collection 1- Access to Exercise in Lawa Lake: focus group 1, HPH head interview, community interviews April 27, 20141pmPresentation about results from data collection 1, start to revise research tools, meet with Ajaans about data collection and revisionsApril 28, 2014Research Redesign: Reformat community interview questions, VHV questions, and focus group questionsApril 29-30, 2014Data Collection 2- Access to Exercise in Lawa Lake: focus group 2, 2 VHV interviews, Public health officer interview, community interviews May 1, 20149-12amStart to do data analysis, brainstorm interventions 1:45pmMeeting with Ajaans to discuss data collection 2, results and intervention ideas: pamphlet, poster, small equipment donationMay 2, 201412:30-5pmPresent Intervention Ideas to VHVs in Lawa Lake and get their feedback on intervention proposal May 3, 2014Prepare Draft of Intervention Materials: Pamphlet and Poster on Exercise with simple equipment, heart rate goals, and (pamphlet only) a little about diabetes, risk factors, and preventative factorsMay 4, 2014Feedback on Intervention Materials from Ajaans Meet as a group to revise and prepare final draftsMay 5, 20149:00amFinal Drafts of Intervention Materials for translation emailed; Confirm availability of dumbbells, resistance bands, hula hoops, and jump ropes at Tesco Lotus and Central Plaza 12:00pm Intervention proposal revised and turned it May 6, 2014Go to Tesco/Central to buy equipment; Intervention Run-throughs with AjaansMay 7, 2014Final group meeting to smooth over intervention plans May 8, 2014 Intervention Day Who did you talk/ collaborate with?(Please include names and contact information. Ex: P’Kovit- he can be contacted through Ajaan John and works at CIEE in the small classroom)Ajaan Jen-0828534457Ajaan Ti-0817171798 Ajaan Toon-HPH in Lawa Lake- contacted through Ajaan Ti Community History (If gathered)(If you gathered new community history information on the community that you did not know before you began the final project, please describe it here. If a timeline is a part of your final outputs, please state so here.) What was the outcome of your project?(What did the community say/do/think after you gave them your information/project? Did you finish your project? Where does your project stand now? )They were interested in our results and our intervention. During the intervention the VHVs were actively and participating. They seemed to learn a lot when we talked about the heart rate. They were also very excited when they got try out the equipment. We finished our portion of the project. But there is more to be done in Lawa Lake regarding diabetes and the continuation of exercise equipment usage. What are some lessons learned?(If you could do it over again, what would you do differently? How did you adapt to changing situations and ambiguities? What tips would you tell future student groups?)we learned that things don’t always go as planned. For instance, just because you are supposed get a tour of the community does not mean that you will. Additionally, when you plan on having two translators but actually only have one, you have to adapt and replan. Additionally, the group has to be prepared to have the times of arrival and departure change in an instance, thus having to work even harder to complete our goals. Be prepared for everything and be flexible. Does your project have any gaps? (Are there any holes in your information or places that you see need to be explored more with this project?)As mentioned in the FINAL REPORT, we believe that more focus on VHV training and pracitces with prevention is a must. Additionally, to push for other exercise options in the community. What are some potential next steps with this project/community?(After your presentation, or last visit to the community, where do you see their community now? In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges they are facing?)What are some future projects students could do with this community or network. Did the community/HPH suggest anything? Offer examples of potential next projects, why they are needed, and thoughts on where to go.)WE think that after our intervention, the VHVs are more capable of teaching women at-risk for diabetes to exercise. However, we feel that the training that the VHVs get, would be interesting to explore. As well as what they are teaching and to whom during their routine rounds of the community. We think that these things are necessary because there seems to be a gap in VHV knowledge and community member knowledge, regarding diabetes, risk factors, prevention, and effective exercise for all communities.
