PARTICIPANT INSTRUCTIONS

PROCEDURES

1. The event will be presented to you through your reading of these instructions, including the Performance Indicators and Event Situation. You will have up to 10 minutes to review this information to determine how you will handle the role-play situation and demonstrate the performance indicators of this event. During the preparation period, you may make notes to use during the role-play situation.

2. You will give an ID label to your adult assistant during the preparation time.

3. You will have up to 10 minutes to role-play your situation with a judge (you may have more than one judge).

4. You will be evaluated on how well you meet the performance indicators of this event.

5. Turn in all your notes and event materials when you have completed the role-play.

PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

1. Develop project plan.

2. Recruit new employees.

3. Write promotional messages that appeal to targeted markets.

4. Select advertising media.

5. Demonstrate appropriate creativity.

EVENT SITUATION

You are to assume the role of a management trainee at Somerset Medical Center. While you rotate throughout the various administrative departments, you are currently working in the human resources department under the director (judge). Your task is to develop a plan to recruit nurses and to create a display advertisement for the employment section of the local newspaper to announce several openings in the nursing staff. This is important, as there is a shortage of health care workers in your area. The competition for good nurses is severe, especially among the large hospitals. At this time you plan should deal only with recruiting people from the local area.

The information concerning the positions is found below. Your advertisement should contain all pertinent information, and be eye-catching and easy to read. Your overall plan may or may not include the use of media beyond the newspaper advertisement.

Weekday and Weekend, Part-time available.

Departments: Medical/Surgical, Chemotherapy, Pediatric, Critical Care, Emergency,

OB-GYN

Salary: Highly competitive, RN’s from $38,000

Signing bonus: $500-$1,000

Benefits: Tuition reimbursement, pension/retirement plan, dental/vision care, full health care, four weeks paid vacation, 12 sick days, 10 paid holidays, uniform allowance

Somerset Medical Center is a 340-bed teaching hospital. It is located in a safe suburban area. Staff parking is provided at no cost. Public transportation is available.

The director (judge) has asked to meet with you once you have completed the advertisement and your plan for recruiting nurses. The role-play will take place in the Director’s (judge’s) office. The director (judge) will begin the role-play by asking to hear your plan. Once you have made your presentation and have answered the director’s (judge’s) questions, the Director (judge) will conclude the role-play by stating he/she will consider your plan.

JUDGE ROLE-PLAY CHARACTERIZATION

You are to assume the role of a Director of Human Resource at Somerset Medical Center. 2. How costly will your plan be versus other uses of media?

3. Why have you chosen to include all/exclude some/all of the information provided to you?

Once the management trainee (participant) has made his/her presentation and has answered your questions, you are to conclude the role-play by stating you will consider his/her plan.

You are not to make any comments after the event is over except to thank the participant.

Although you may see other performance indicators being demonstrated by the participants, those listed in the Performance Indicators section are the critical ones you are measuring for this particular event.
