White Academy of Leadership is governed by all regulations of the Duval County School Board, and the DCPS Student Code of Conduct.This handbook does not alter the letter or spirit of Board Policy, but is intended to acquaint Students with the goals, organization, operations, and expectations of EDWARD H WHITE. THE UNIFORM1. ?????The EDWARD H WHITE uniform is an important element in the morale, pride, discipline and effectiveness of our program. It is important for EDWARD H WHITE Students to maintain a high standard of dress and personal appearance. The key elements are neatness, cleanliness, safety and image.2. ?????Wearing your uniform should be a matter of personal pride. Your dress and conduct shall be such as to reflect credit upon your school, your community, and your country. No articles such as pencils, pens, combs, or similar items shall be worn exposed when in uniform.3. ??????Cell phones, headphones, earbuds, and other electronic devices are not part of the uniform. If found in your possession, items will be confiscated. ?Per the Student Code of Conduct, all personal electronic devices should be turned off and put away between 0700 – 1400 hours.B. ????????UNIFORM POLICYStudents MUST be in uniform every day. Students are also expected to be in complete uniform while traveling to and from EDWARD H WHITE. ?Students may not leave or enter the campus in the civilian clothes, unless otherwise directed.C. ???DAILY SERVICE UNIFORM1. ?????Polo Dry-Fit Shirt with an embroidered school logo.9th – Gold10th – Green11th - Gray Polo shirt will be worn tucked into uniform pants and the minimum of the?lower two buttons buttoned.2. ?????Khaki Pants.Pants should be cotton, khaki, and flat front purchased from RC Uniforms and have the RC logo on pants.Belt will go through all belt loops.Pants will be worn properly on the hips.Students are prohibited from wearing any pair of pants not purchased from RC Uniforms. All khaki pants must be properly fitted and must not be too tight or oversized. The hem of the pants should cover the tongue of the shoe/boot. ? 3. ?????Black Canvas Belt.Buckle and tip will be silver, polished, with no dullness.Belt tip will be flush with end of metal buckle.There will be no more than 6 inches of excess belt.Belt buckle will be worn centered on pants button/center seam.4. ?????Closed-Toed Black Uniform Boot or any athletic shoeSolid black sneakers/boots with black laces will be laced through all available eyelets and must be purchased from RC Uniforms.5. ?????Black Crew SocksBlack plain crew socks purchased from RC Unifroms.6. ?????EDWARD H WHITE JacketWinter and cold classrooms – no other outerwear will be permitted.All jackets must be embroidered with the Student’s first initial and last name.If a Student brings an unauthorized jacket to school, it will be confiscated.The EDWARD H WHITE jacket is not a replacement or substitute for a uniform shirt. ?When wearing the jacket, the sleeves should always be down, and the jacket should not be zipped. ?7. ????School IDAt all times during the school day, ID’s are to be worn around the Student’s neck via a lanyard or clipped to clothing.Students will receive a daily uniform grade in their Leadership/NJROTC class. D. ????PURCHASING THE UNIFORM ????? ALL uniform items, will be purchased from RC Uniforms located at 11160 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32246, 904-646-0493, or via the company’s website . RC uniforms is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10am-6pm and will be available for Students to try on uniform items to ensure a proper fit. RC Uniforms is the only approved vendor of EDWARD H WHITE uniforms for the 2018 – 2019 school year.E. ?????OTHER UNIFORM ITEMS/OPTIONALGloves may be worn for warmth during the winter months with any uniform when the Student jacket is worn. Gloves shall not be worn in the classroom, during inspections, or at any other time when not exposed to the elements. Gloves should be black and full-fingered.Undergarments - A plain crew neck white or black undershirt may be worn under the polo shirt. Long sleeve shirts may be worn under the polo shirt during winter only. Students will be permitted to wear their game day jerseys on game days only. F. ???HAIRSTYLES??? Extreme, eccentric, styles or colors are not authorized. ? Permitted: Fades, high and tight, buzz cut, braids, dreads ??Prohibited: Extreme colors for hair/extensions (red, blue, green, etc.). ????????? Students are not permitted to wear bandanas, head bands or any other head coverings.G. ???JEWELRYDental accessories such as gold/silver/platinum teeth/grills are prohibited unless deemed medically necessary by a licensed medical professional and documentation is provided to the school.Both males and females may wear necklaces IF they are not visible while in any uniform.H. ???PERSONAL APPEARANCECosmeticsApplied in good taste and colors blend with natural skin tone. Exaggerated or faddish cosmetics are inappropriate. Lipstick should be conservative. Extreme color lipstick such as blue, yellow, green, or black are prohibited.No articles such as pencils, pens, combs, hair picks, or similar items shall be worn exposed when in uniform.Cell phones/Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs), earbuds/headphones are not part of the Student uniform and must be turned off and put away between 0700 – 1400 hours. If a Student is displaying or wearing any of these items, they will be confiscated.Uniform inspections will be announced everyday via the PA system. Any Student out of dress code will be subject to the school’s uniform and behavior policy. Any Student receiving 12 or more uniform violation points will be subject to dismissal from EDWARD H WHITE. I. ??????BOOK BAGSAll Students may have a book bag to carry their books that is IAW Duval County regulations. Gym bags will be authorized to carry gym clothing, sports clothes, etc., and will be stored away.?III. ??????????CLASSROOM/SCHOOL CONDUCTAPPROPRIATE INTERACTIONSStudents will address all teachers and staff appropriately (Mr., Mrs., or Ms. with the teacher’s last name - for example: “Mr. Smith, Mrs. Jones,” etc.).Responses such as: “yeah”, “huh”, “okay”, “uh huh” or other guttural replies will not be used by Students in response to faculty/staff inquiries. “Yes, sir/ma’am” or “no, sir/ma’am” or a direct informational response are the only replies that will be accepted.When addressing an adult or other Students, you shall not have any items (gum, sunflower seeds, pens) in your mouth.B. ????CHAMPsAll that we do is governed through a specific set of instructions summed up in the acronym, CHAMPs. ?For each activity, transition, ritual, and routine, we specify each of the following conditions:C = Conversation Level 0 = no talking; Level 1 = whisper; Level 2 = conversation; Level 3 = presentationH = HelpThis is the ritual for getting the attention of a teacher or other person in charge.A = ActivityThis is the specific set of directions for completing this particular activity, ritual or routine.M = MovementThis identifies the movement that is allowed during a specific transition or activity.P = ParticipationThis is what a person should see if the activity is being completed correctly.S = SuccessIf all is followed, then we have success!?The following CHAMPs routines will be followed in every classroom with every teacher. ?Other rituals and routines for classroom activities and transitions will be established by the individual teacher.CHAMPs for End of Class RoutineCLevel 1HRaise your hand and wait to be recognized.AAt the end of class, the teacher will signal the Section Leaders with the following command: ?“Section Leaders, Take Charge.” ?At that point, the Section Leaders will lead the inspection of the classroom and advise the teacher that the class is ready for dismissal. ?MStudents will clean up their work area, collect their belongings and stay seated unless directed by the teacher. Students WILL NOT LEAVE the classroom or approach the door, until dismissed by the teacher. The teacher dismisses the class - NOT THE BELL.PStudents will quickly and efficiently prepare for dismissal, while section leaders ensure the class is clean and all instructional materials are accounted for and properly put away. CHAMPs for Cafeteria ConductCLevel 2HRaise your hand and wait to be recognized.AStudents will report directly to the cafeteria. ?No Student is permitted to stop at their locker, another teacher’s classroom, or the bathroom while traveling to or from the cafeteria.All passes to the bathroom will be issued by the administrators on duty in the cafeteria. Upon arrival in the cafeteria, report directly to the serving line with your ID. (If you do not have an ID, you will be directed Counselor’s Corner to purchase an additional ID). ?Lunch lines close 15 minutes after the beginning of the lunch period. NO EXCEPTIONSOnce you have received your lunch, you will report directly to a table and remain seated throughout the remainder of the lunch period. ?You should be seated properly at your table with your feet and legs under the table. ?There is no straddling the bench or sitting with your back to table. The aisle should always be clear of bags.The duty administrator will dismiss the cafeteria by rows. ?You are to remain seated until your row has been called.You must ask permission of the duty administrators to visit Counselor’s Corner.All Students must ensure that the table is cleaned prior to dismissal from the cafeteria. MStudents are to remain seated throughout the entire lunch period unless permission to move has been given by a duty administrator.PStudents are seated properly, eating and conversing at voice level 2.CHAMPs for Hall PassesCLevel 0HRaise your hand and wait to be recognized.AThe hall pass is a vest that will be put on properly prior to leaving the classroom, and worn at all times until the Student returns. Students who fail to follow this protocol will be denied future passes. One Vest = One Hall Pass for one Student. ?No handwritten passes are permitted.Green Vest = Bathroom/Locker Hall PassOrange Vest = Office Hall Pass (Only used if called by that office)A Student will print their name and time of departure on the whiteboard prior to leaving the classroom. ?(Security will be notified after 10 minutes). Students are to report to the closest bathroom indicated on the vest by color. There are no passes to see counselors, other teachers, pay debts, fines, dues, or purchase lockers, parking decals, etc.... ?All personal business will be handled during lunch, or after school in Counselor’s Corner. ?There are no hall passes permitted during the first and last 30 minutes of class. There are no hall passes permitted during 3rd and 7th period. (LUNCH)There are no hall passes permitted to the main office or the school counselor unless the Student has been called by that office. (This is only time you will use the orange vest).MStudent is traveling directly to and from the bathroom/locker or office. PStudent has signed out of the classroom and is wearing the vest properly before leaving the classroom. ?The Student is not wandering the halls, and is traveling directly to and from the classroom in a timely manner. AM Arrival ProceduresCVoice Level: 2HSee the nearest faculty/staff member for assistance.AUpon arriving on campus, Students must report directly to the cafeteria or the auditorium. ?Students are not permitted to remain in the bus loading zone, in front of the school, or the main entrance. Electronic devices must be turned off and put away prior to entering the building. ?This includes but is not limited to: cell phones, iPods, iPads, tablets, MP3 players, headphones, earbuds, or Bluetooth devices. ?None of these devices are to be visible. Students are to report directly to class when dismissed from the cafeteria or the auditorium. Students are not permitted to congregate and socialize.Once a Student enters the classroom, the Student must stay in the classroom.Students are not permitted congregate in front of their classroom.Any Student in the hallway after the bell has rang will report directly to the nearest tardy location.MStudents should either be at their locker, the restroom, or moving towards their classroom. PStudents are walking and talking and the hallways are clear by 7:15.PM Dismissal ProcedureCVoice Level: 2HSee the nearest faculty/staff member for assistance.AOnce dismissed, report directly to one of the following:Walkers: Leave campus immediately.Car Riders: Wait for their ride under the cafeteria overhang. ?There is to be no Student sitting on the curb, outside of the main entrance, or the Mod 1 overhang.Bus Riders: The only Students permitted in the bus loading zone are bus riders. ?Any Student in the bus loading after bus dismissal will face disciplinary consequences as outlined in the Duval County Student Code of Conduct and will be escorted off campus. ?The gates to the bus loading zone will be locked promptly at 2:15.Drivers: Exit the building and leave the campus immediately. ?Student parking lot will be locked promptly at 2:15. Students who fail to follow this protocol will lose on campus parking privileges. ?Students who park in the faculty parking lot will be subject to having their vehicle towed at their expense.After School Activities: Report directly to the cafeteria, sign in, take a seat at your designated table, and remain seated until your coach, sponsor, tutor, or teacher arrives to pick you up. ?This includes all after school activities, sports, tutoring, NJROTC, clubs. ?Any Student who has not reported to the cafeteria by 2:15, will be escorted out of the building and off campus.MStudents are to report directly to the areas identified above. Students are not to be in any unauthorized area. PThe campus is cleared of all Students by 2:15. C. ???SIGNAL FOR ATTENTIONWhen a teacher or administrator needs the attention of a group of Students, the same signal for attention will be used in all instances.Procedure:Teacher or administrator raises his/her right hand and calls for attention: ?“May I have your attention please?”Immediately upon seeing and/or hearing the call for attention, Students stop talking, raise their hand and wait for instructions.This process should take no more than 5 seconds.D. ???DISCIPLINE POLICYStudents will be monitored and counseled through their Leadership Courses and Academic courses regarding personal responsibility and self-discipline. ?Students who act outside of the EDWARD H WHITE Honor Code will be referred to the Dean of Discipline for counseling and next-step interventions.While we expect all Students to abide by the Honor Code, and to rise to the level of the leadership expectations, it may be necessary at times to enforce discipline for lapses in judgment. ?In these cases, we implement a tiered approach to discipline. ?The first level is within the oversight of the classroom teacher. ?All classroom Teachers will follow and document the progressive interventions outlined below. 1. ?????Level 1 Classroom InterventionsVerbal WarningChange Seating / In-class time out.Contact Parent/Guardian (Email/Phone, or Letter)Student/Teacher Conference & Parent ContactParent Teacher ConferenceNOTE: When a Student continues to display chronic misbehavior at the Level 1 level, the Student will be recommended for Level 2 interventions.2. ?????Level 2 InterventionsLevel 2 indicates that a Student has exhausted all Level 1 intervention, and that a higher level of intervention is required. ?Additional assistance may be necessary to correct the behavior. ?Examples might include: a team conference with a parent, referral to the Dean, referral to a school counselor, counseling with the Leadership Instructor, or restorative practices.3. ?????Level 3 InterventionIf a Student’s conduct does not improve, or escalates to more serious offences, more formal interventions will be implemented and will follow the progression of interventions outlined in the Duval County Student Code Conduct. I. ??????????????????MULTI-TIERED SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT (MTSS)A. ???STUDENT REVIEW BOARD (CRB)A Student Review Board (CRB) will meet monthly to review Students who are failing to meet the academic and behavioral expectations of EDWARD H WHITE. The CRB shall review the Student records and develop an individualized plan for success. ?In general, the following criteria will warrant a CRB referral:Has a GPA below 2.0 at the end of the quarter.Has received Level 3 Interventions and shows no signs of improvement.Is tardy and/or accumulated 3 or more unexcused absences during the quarter.The CRB will consist of:Principal / APMagnet CoordinatorDean of StudentsLeadership InstructorSchool CounselorCommunities in Schools RepresentativeCommunity School DirectorLead ESE (if required)Team Teachers (Optional)B. ????POSITIVE BASED INTERVENTIONSAs our Students learn and begin to live up to the Honor Code, we believe that it is important to recognize outstanding and consistent behavior when warranted. ?Therefore, we have established positive interventions to recognize and encourage Students to continue to develop toward their full potential as leaders.1. ?????VIP AwardVIP is our Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support (PBIS) program that tracks and rewards Students who are in compliance with EDWARD H WHITE expectations. ?Teachers and administrators award Students points the Hero software. ?These points will be redeemed monthly, quarterly, and yearly for individual and group rewards. 2. ?????Quarterly AwardsEach quarter, Students will be recognized and awarded for conduct, service and academics through school-based celebrations. ?Students will be recognized for excellence using the following criteria: GPA, amount of behavior referrals, tardies/attendance, community service, and the accumulation of Hero Points. C. ????PROGRESS REPORTS/REPORT CARDSInterim progress reports are issued after the fourth week of each marking period. Report cards are issued at the close of the ninth week of the marking period. These dates are on the school calendar online.D. ???GRADE PORTALIt is the responsibility of the Student to keep his/her parents informed of their academic progress.Parents and Students may view grades on the DCPS Grade Portal. To access the Focus Grade Portal please visit: ?? can access the grade portal using their normal district login and password. ?Parents are given access to Focus through a personal login and password and can view their children’s grades at any time over the course of the school year. Parent portal login information can only be obtained by coming to the Guidance Office with a photo ID to pick up the login information. ?Due to privacy restrictions, parent portal login information cannot be given out over the telephone or by email.E. ???EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Participation in extracurricular activities, as well as school field trips at Edward H White Academy of Leadership is a privilege. Criteria for participation shall include a minimum grade of “C” and acceptable behavior in ALL classes during the grading period. Failure to establish and maintain the aforementioned standards shall render the Student ineligible to participate. Students must be in school, all day, the day of an activity or trip. ?If the activity or trip is on a weekend, the Student must be in school the day before. Parental and teacher permission is required. ?Other athletic requirements, including the effect of suspensions and referrals, can be found on Duval County website at . ?????????????LEADERSHIPA. ???CLASSROOM RESPONSIBILITIESSection Leader: ?Each and every classroom will have an assigned section leader and Assistant Section Leader. The Section Leader will assist the teacher in various tasks as needed or prescribed by the teacher. ?In addition, the Section Leader will conduct the end of class clean-up and inform the teacher when the class is ready for dismissal. ??Section Leader responsibilities include but are not limited to:Breakfast in the Classroom Rituals and RoutinesAssisting with attendance when there is a substituteManaging classroom materials. ?(Ensuring laptops are properly put in carts and are inventoried.)Assistant Section Leader: ?In the event that the Section Leader is absent, the Assistant will take his/her place. In addition, he/she will assist the Section Leader with the duties outlined above. B. ???COMMUNITY SERVICEEach EDWARD H WHITE Student will be required to complete a minimum of 10 hours of community service each year. ??These service hours will be coordinated through the Leadership Courses, ROTC, and Social Studies Department. Research shows that few factors within Students’ and families’ control are more closely associated with academic success than school attendance. Students need to be in the classroom to benefit from the teacher’s instruction, and from interaction and exchange of ideas with peers. Excessive absences and tardiness affect the culture of the classroom, where the faculty seeks to build a community of learners. A Student’s excessive absences or tardiness can lead to incomplete and unsatisfactory work, a reduced capacity to meet curricular standards, and lower course grades.Whenever possible, appointments for Students; i.e., doctor, dentist, etc., should be made after school hours so as to not interrupt the learning process. If appointment is during school hours a doctor’s note is required. ?B. ????EMERGENCY CARDSStudents must have an up-to-date emergency card on file in the Dean’s Office. This information card should be filled in and signed by parents/guardians during the first week of school. In case of an emergency, this may be the only way the staff can reach parents/guardians or the Student’s family physician. It is the parent’s or guardian’s responsibility to forward changes in address or phone number to the Dean’s Office immediately upon changing.C. ???PHONE POLICYStudent cell phones must be turned off (not on silent or vibrate) during the school day. ?Cell phones must not be used for any purpose. Cell phones and other electronic devices are not part of the uniform. If found in your possession between 0700 – 1400 hours, items will be confiscated.D. ???HALL PASSESNo hall passes are given to students the first thirty minutes or the last thirty minutes of class. There are absolutely no hall passes issued during 3rd/7th period. ?Students need to be in their classrooms for instruction and learning. ?Therefore, hall passes should only be given if absolutely necessary. Hall Pass Procedure:· ?????One person per hall pass. Hall passes are either yellow for the bathroom or orange for visits ???to offices. · ???????Orange vests are to only be issued to a Student when they have been summoned to the dean’s office, the school counselor’s office, or the main entrance.· ?????Time is to be marked when a Student leaves the classroom and monitored. ?If a Student is absent for more than 10 minutes, the dean’s office must be alerted.E. ????MEDICAL CARE1. ???? First aid is given in emergencies. ?All Students needing care must wear an orange vest and report directly to the nurse located in Mod 5.2. ???? Medications prescribed by a licensed health care provider may be administered to Students by the nurse under the following conditions:Written request received from parent/guardian for non-prescription medication.Prescription medications brought/sent to school should be in the original container that is properly labeled with the Student’s name; the name of the medication; time; dosage; how it is to be administered; the physician’s name; name of pharmacy and phone number; and a current date of the prescription.All medications must be kept in the nurse's office. The only exceptions to this rule are prescription inhalers for asthmatics and epi-pens for those with severe allergic reactions. In order to carry inhalers or epi-pens, Students must have written permission from their parents/guardians and written permission from their doctors on file in the nurse's office.F. ?????CHRONIC ILLNESSESAny Student who needs to be excused from any physical training (long term) must submit a physician’s statement.2. ???? Any Student who needs frequent bathroom access needs to submit a physician’s statement indicating the timeframe for the pass.G. ???ACCIDENTSAny accident that results in serious injury should be reported to the nurse and to the Main Office and an Incident Report filed. Other accidents or illnesses will be taken care of through the Dean’s Office, as needed. ................
