GA Tech’s CEISMC

and STEM Education

In Cobb County Schools

Through GA Tech’s Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics and Computing (CEISMC), the university’s K-12 education outreach arm, educational groups, schools, corporations, and opinion leaders unite to ensure that K-12 students in Georgia receive the best possible preparation in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology (STEM) as they seek their place in the modern world. CEISMC and its partners are dedicated to igniting the spark that inspires children of all backgrounds to the possibility of STEM careers and to becoming involved and intrigued in the STEM issues of modern life. GA Tech’s K-12 partnerships in Cobb County include:

GIFT (Georgia Intern-Fellowships for Teachers), is a program that provides opportunities for middle and high school science and mathematics teachers to experience first hand the applications of science and mathematics in business and research. An environmental science teacher at South Cobb High School, Alex Alvarez interned for six weeks with The National Park Service under the GIFT program helping the education staff develop curriculum materials that will be used during ranger-led interactive field trips for Cobb County students at Hyde Farms. Hyde Farms, a special place in history and culture is a 132 acre primitive farm that runs along the Chattahoochee River near Morgan Falls Dam. Mr. Alvarez worked for six weeks to develop a teacher packet designed for 2nd and 8th grades students (the targeted audience for Hyde Farms first-year fieldtrip experience). Included in the packet are vocabulary, background information, pre and post visit activities, Georgia Performance Standards relating to topics, and links to other various resources. The packet will be available by mid October on the National Park Service’s website for teachers to download as needed to help prepare for trips to the farm and as supplement to instruction in the classroom. Because of a desire to further his training in water conservation and quality, Alvarez also assisted with water quality testing for the Chattahoochee River during the course of his internship. In support of his plans to start an Advance Placement Environmental Science course next spring, Alvarez photographed testing techniques to share with students in the classroom. Alvarez said, “I took several photos to share the techniques with students as my classroom does not contain the more advanced equipment including probes that cost $7,000 each. I find that opportunities like GIFT allow students, by extension of their teacher, to gain more depth in their research and overall understanding of experimentation”. Alvarez’s mentor, Ranger Marjorie Thomas said “Through Alex’s GIFT internship, he has provided resources and information for the park and now can serve as a bridge between Cobb County schools and our national park lands, enabling students to become future generations of park land users”.

Other Cobb County teachers interning under GIFT this summer included Berkil Alexander- Pebblebrook High School at the GA Tech Microelectronics Research Center National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network Program where he used electrolyte to facilitate electrolysis reaction; Sergio Corvalan – Wheeler High School at the GA Tech Research Institute where he used sound absorption and sound transmission equipment to conduct and analyze the results of aerodynamic and acoustic principles experiments; and Ed Van Haute – Daniels Middle School at the Georgia Power Plant in McDonough where he worked with the plant’s Compliance Specialist on several projects including getting plant employees respirator fit-tested, conducting daily environmental rounds, and performing water analysis on condensate, feed water and boiler samples.

Since its implementation in 1991, GIFT has placed more than 1500 teachers in internships throughout the state. For more information about GIFT, contact

Flood Relief

Over the past weekend, the SC baseball team held a fund raising

tournament and are donating $1000 of the proceeds to help victims of the recent flood. The teams that participated; the South Paulding

Spartans, the Alexander HS Cougars, Fever Baseball, North Georgia

Barons, and the East Cobb Yankees all donated food, clothing, cleaning supplies etc., that were given to the First Baptist Church of Austell to help them out with their flood relief efforts. They have many families living in the church that lost everything in the flood,

including their homes. SC Baseball would like to thank all of the

participating teams and the SC players and parents for making this

tournament a success and especially for helping out the flood victims.
