Adelaide Medical Centre Patient Leaflet Ear wax removal The ideal is to avoid the build-up of ear wax by using e.g. olive oil in each ear once a week. Most pharmacies stock Earol which is an easy to use olive oil spray. Boots also do a saline based ear cleaning spray for use 2/3 times a week (has to be ordered on-line or in store). However, for some people e.g those who wear hearing aids, who swim or have narrow ear canals a build-up of wax may be unavoidable from time to time, causing discomfort /pain and deafness. Do not use cotton buds or anything similar to remove the wax. There are two ways a trained clinician can remove wax provided it has been softened with e.g. olive oil for 5 -10 days before the procedure.Using a water syringe. Increasingly this procedure is not used as it can, even in expert hands, cause damage to the ear or the ear drum Micro-suction. The equipment is expensive to buy and maintain. The Adelaide Practice now provides neither service on grounds of either patient safety or expense. Your optionsAsk your doctor to refer you to a Micro-suction clinic at the Royal Free Hospital or the Royal ENT (ear, nose and throat). Referral generally takes Four weeksGo to an NHS walk-in centre. The nearest is in the Soho Clinic in Frith Street but they only do water syringing. They undertake to triage you within ten minute but warn you may have to wait up to three hours.
