POSITION OBJECTIVE

Assist the Centre Director and Executive Director, Children's Services to provide strong leadership in the development and implementation of integrated early childhood services at Northside and to a team which provides high quality Early Childhood Education and Care to children. Provide ongoing support and assistance in all areas of daily operational requirements and develop positive partnerships and relationships which support families and the community.

The focus of the Assistant Director ? Early Childhood Teacher is on pedagogical excellence and demonstration of expert teaching skills and to provide ongoing support and assistance to the nominated supervisor to ensure compliance with the National Quality Framework at all times.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

All key responsibilities are based on the National Law and Regulations, the Principles, Practices and outcomes detailed in the Early Years Learning Framework and the National Quality Framework. All Educators are expected to have a working knowledge of these documents, which should underpin their pedagogy and together with the Centre philosophy, directly reflect their relationships with children, families and co-educators.

Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and practice reflected by developing innovative programs of curriculum and being responsive to emerging trends and issues within early childhood education, service and the community.

Exercise professional judgement, sound decision making and assessment skills to supervise processes for approving the operation of ECEC services and associated monitoring, compliance and enforcement through the exercise of relevant statutory delegations and in accordance with relevant legislation, policies and procedures.

Undertake all responsibilities associated with being a certified supervisor under the Education and Care Services National Regulations 2012.

Provide educational leadership within the Centre and contribute to the professional growth of others that directly links to their work plans and the Quality Improvement Plan at the Centre.

Share information with families relating to educational programs through parent information evenings, curriculum nights, open days, newsletter articles, Centre tours and interviews.

Guide and support educators to build capability, provide curriculum direction and ensure children achieve the outcomes of the approved learning framework including: - accurately and meaningfully documenting children's experiences and discuss how this information can be used to extend the children's learning - employing a diverse range of teaching strategies including intentional teaching and reflective practice in daily activities.

Build trusting professional relationships with the educators through successful monitoring, mentoring and support.

Assist the Centre Director and Executive Director in matters relating to leadership, pedagogical leadership, management and support within Children's Services at Northside with the ability to act as Centre Director in periods of absence.

Promote health, wellbeing and encouraging educational environment for children in the Centre.

Support educators to understand the National Quality Framework and incorporate in practice along with the philosophy, policies and procedures of the organization through the provision of professional learning opportunities and mentoring.

Work collaboratively with other teams across Northside Community Service and other early childhood professionals/agencies in the community including: - ACT Children's Policy and Regulation Unit (CPRU) - Early Childhood Centres - Maternal and Child Health Nurses - Early Intervention specialists - Schools and preschools.

Work with the community to strengthen ties between agencies and services, including links to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and CALD communities.

Demonstrate strong leadership skills and work according to Australian laws and regulations, keeping up to date with developments in the Early Childhood sector.

KEY PERFORMANCE MEASURES (KPMS)

Key performance measures as identified in the individual work plan Adherence to the National Quality Framework and Standards as listed below.

QA1 Educational program and Practice (As per preschool teacher PD) Lead educators to plan, implement, assess and review a high quality and diverse educational program based on the EYLF with references to the NQS, considering developmental needs, interests and abilities of all children attending the services Lead educators to actively support every child to participate in the program and ensure the program promotes children's agency choices and influence Guide educators to deliver effective and valuable documentation of children's learning in accordance with the Centre philosophy, the Quality Improvement Plan and the EYLF outcomes.

Conduct regular audits to ensure staff and children effectively utilise health and hygiene practices including meeting all regulations relating to food safety and preparation, medical management plans, risk management plans, policies and procedures

Conduct regular audits to ensure children have access to nutritious food and fresh drinking water Conduct regular audits and provide examples of how physical exercise can be implemented in the service.

QA5 Relationships with children Develop and sustain strong and respectful relationships with all children Provide professional development and guidance on managing challenging behavior so as to adhere to the UN convention of the rights of children Work with educators to develop a clear picture of the child as a learner and the rights of the child so as to create optimal relationships with children.

QA6 Collaborative partnerships with families and communities Establish, develop and maintain links across all Centres and the organisation as appropriate. Establish and maintain links with local networks, resource agencies, government authorities, local schools and other relevant organisations.

QA7 Leadership and service management Ensure all practices are in accordance with the NQS and reflect the philosophy, policies and procedures of the service Lead and promote the understanding of the NQF, NQS and EYLF at Harrison Develop, maintain and support respectful, supportive, collaborative and responsible relationships with staff across all Centres Develop and sustain positive relationships with the CPRU

KEY COMPETENCIES (SELECTION CRITERIA)

1. High level knowledge of the National Quality Framework and Standards, the service philosophy of Education and Care with the National Early Years Learning Framework and committed to the implementation of these processes. Working knowledge of all statutory requirements, licensing and legislation relating to the provision of Children's Services.

2. Proven leadership and coordination skills, including the demonstrated ability to successfully supervise team members in order to achieve quality client and organisational outcomes within time and cost limitations.

3. Highly motivated and committed individual with an ability to work independently and in a team environment.

4. Well-developed written and oral communication and interpersonal skills to ensure the smooth running of the service and healthy team environment.

5. Demonstrated ability to analyse complex ECEC practice issues and to effectively contribute to the development of and supervise the implementation of strategies to address these issues, including supporting best practice through demonstrated application of a knowledge of early childhood development, pedagogy and learning frameworks to enable continuous quality improvement.

6. Demonstrated ability to provide ongoing support to the Nominated Supervisor in all areas of administrative procedures, curriculum development, family and community liaison and staff professional development.

7. Effective problem solving and negotiation skills.

8. Demonstrated experience in guiding the activities of employees engaged in the implementation and evaluation of developmentally appropriate programs.

9. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain culturally appropriate relationships with a diverse range of services providers, internal and external stakeholders by encouraging and recognizing the value of such diversity.

10. A sound understanding of Work Health and Safety legislation and its implication to ensure a safe and healthy work environment in Children's Services

RELATIONSHIPS / INTERFACES WITH OTHER FUNCTIONS / PEOPLE (E.G. REPORTING LINES)

Children, Families and Educators Centre Director, Harrison Early Childhood Centre and the Executive Director, Children's Services will

provide broad guidance regarding all other portfolios, and assistance in workload management and planning Centre Directors, staff, students and volunteers Internal and external stakeholders including clients, families, government and childhood agencies

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS

Degree qualified in Early Childhood Teaching approved by ACECQA A current Working with Vulnerable People (ACT) card First aid training as prescribed in the Education and Care Services National Law Act 2010 Asthma and Anaphylaxis Management training Food Safety, Handling and Hygiene training (as applicable)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

? An individual Work Plan including key performance measures will be developed upon commencement of employment. The initial performance criteria will be reviewed on an ongoing basis in the context of assessing achievement of strategic directions, key results and program outputs.
