Why?__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________The United States has a “checkered past” when it comes to the relationships between the different groups of people living in the country. One of these relationships was the one between the men of the U.S. government and the Native Americans. The 100 year long struggle over land between these two forces became known as the Indian Wars and we can still see the effects of these events today. -142240936625US ArmyUS ArmyWhat were the Indian Wars?__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________-2862471237367Social Scientists believe that the first Native Americans walked to North America from Asia in search of food using the Siberian Land Bridge pictured here. Would you walk to Asia if there was no food left in America?_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________The colonists that came to North America from Europe were not the first humans to live on the continent of North America. There have been people living in America since before the Ice Age. When the colonists from England arrived in the 1600s, they called these people Native Americans or American Indians. The colonists believed that the American Indians were uncivilized because they lived in tribes and had no large cities or central governments. The colonists believed that they were better than the Indians and that they could treat them however they wanted. Were the American colonists the first people to come to North America? Who was here first?__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________After the Revolutionary War the U.S. Government became responsible for negotiating with the Native Americans. Most government officials still believed that the Natives were savages and that it was alright to take their land away for American settlers to live on and farm. So beginning in the early 1800s, the government began forcing entire tribes of Native Americans to leave the land they were living on along the East Coast and move to reservations (land set aside by the government for Natives to live on). 2981739165072The government expected the Native Americans to move from their homes to the dark spots on the map. The Cherokee Tribe of Florida refused to leave the land that they had lived on for thousands of years and fought back when settlers came to build farms on it. In 1834, President Andrew Jackson sent the U.S. Army to Florida and threatened to kill the Cherokee unless they moved. The Cherokee people were forced to walk from Florida all the way to Oklahoma in the middle of winter. Hundreds of Cherokee died along the way and the route they took became known as the Trail of Tears. What did Andrew Jackson do to the people of the Cherokee Tribe? This time the Natives were ready for them. The Lakota Tribe of Montana armed themselves with guns and fought with the United States army for 3 years in the Indian Wars. In June of 1876 a huge force of Lakota warriors ambushed (attacked by surprise) a U.S. Army force under the command of George Custer and killed them all. Custer had the top of his head sliced off and sewing needles shoved into his ears by the angry Indians. What happened when the U.S. Army tried to force the Lakota Tribe off their land?____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________-278765580390001908175580390Even though they had been defeated at the Battle of Little Bighorn the US Army was still a powerful military force. Soldiers riding on horses chased the remaining Indians across the Great Plains and shot them when they caught them. Do you think it was fair for the government to use the army to enforce its laws? Why or why not?__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________When the newspapers began reporting on the battle it horrified the people living all over the country. Many Americans demanded that the government put an end to the Indian Wars. The U.S. Army spent the next 14 years hunting down the Lakota Tribe until none remained. What did the American people start demanding when they heard about what happened to Custer?____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________The event that brought the Indian Wars to an end at last wasn’t a battle at all; it was a massacre (the large-scale killing of unarmed people). In December of 1890 the army cornered a force of 500 Lakota Indians near Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota. When they tried to take the guns of the Lakota, shots were fired into the air by mistake and the entire army opened fire into the helpless Indians. 200 Lakota Indians were killed in what became known as the Massacre at Wounded Knee. The last great Native American leader, Sitting Bull was killed in the massacre. With no leader and faced with the growing strength of the U.S. Army, the remaining tribes of Indians surrendered and the Indian Wars came to an end.
