Newbury: Collins Education Associates LLC.Summary of the Article or Resource: In the book Twelve Assignments Every Middle School Student Should Write, author Gary Chadwell charges readers that writing is the most important skill to be successful at high-stakes tests. Students need to be fluent writers because there are so many implications. This skill should not fall to English teacher alone. All content area teachers should be teaching and reviewing the writing process in class. That way, students will feel comfortable responding when it comes time to be assessed. In this book, Chadwell introduces us to elements of great writing. Each is an integral part of a successful piece of literature. Of all these, putting information into a summary is of upmost importance. This skill is not necessarily easy. Possibly because it takes several skills – vocabulary, paraphrasing, categorizing, finding main ideas and details. Chadwell gives the reader several strategies to use in order to find pertinent information. In fact, this book is filled with techniques to use in order to help students be successful. Evaluation of the Article or Resource: Mr. Chadwell has written several books on education. In this one, he offers a roadmap to teaching writing. His experiences are documented in this text and are very readable. The fact that he aims directly at middle school writers helps me immensely as a middle school ELA teacher. Also, the foreword is written by publisher John Collins. This says a lot because Collins Educational Associates LLC is well known and prints books (etc.) that are used in many of America’s classrooms. Reflection of the Article or Resource:I plan to use this book in my classroom next year. There are several ideas and writing prompts that I want to try. I feel that Mr. Chadwell has given adequate information when it comes to the ‘why’, especially when talking about summary writing (which is what I spend most of my time on in class). Being able to pull apart information from a passage and relaying the information is a life skill that is difficult for some students. The process needs to be worked on, strategies implemented, and they need to be able to perform in all content areas. ................
