Community Grant Highlight

Paddy McNeil loves music and wanted to share that with others. With support from the WRWC, local businesses and several community partners, Paddy brought the Pasadena Music & Friends Group to life. The goal was to provide a guitar camp to area residents: learn 10 chords and 4 songs in a fun, friendly group setting. That goal was certainly met and surpassed!

"Thank-you for this opportunity. I really enjoy playing the guitar and

more especially having likeminded people to play along with.

I have met many new people, have learned music and enhanced

my skills; a win-win!! - PR

The three guitar leaders, Alvin, Jerry and Paddy, were community residents that came to share their knowledge and skills with others. The 39 participants ranged in age from 20 to 90. Starting in July, guitar camp was planned as a two-hour session once a week for six weeks. This soon became two sessions per week (an afternoon and an evening) and sessions are longer; participants show up early to socialize and stay longer to continue practicing, playing together and having a fun social gathering.

The group has been a great success! They continue to meet regularly and hopefully some of the students will transition to instructors for newcomers; everyone is welcomed, any time! An accordion group has started with a leader, Cal, and four students. There are intentions to play in public sometime soon. As Paddy says to everyone, "when you are home alone playing and singing, you are the best musician in the house!"

"As a senior this group has given me a chance to fulfill a lifelong dream, to learn guitar and gain confidence in myself. The other benefit is meeting people who have the same interest in music. The support of the instructors and members of the group is very special to me. I am very thankful for the Music & Friends Group" - MS

School Grant Highlight

With financial support from The Western Regional Wellness Coalition's School Grant Program, Stephenville Primary School embarked on its project to create a Travelling Library for Social Emotional Learning. The travelling library, consists of themed bins of resources for social emotional learning. Housed on a mobile cart, the collection of resources is travelling throughout the school to be used in different grades and classes. Teachers use the resources, which usually consists of books and paired activities, in their classroom to address a variety of social issues such as bullying, mindfulness, being a good friend and dealing with your feelings to name a few. Eventually parents will also be able to avail of the resources for home use. This project will infuse the school with social emotional learning materials that will continue to grow and expand as new resources are identified and acquired by the school. The Travelling Library for Social Emotional Learning will have a positive impact on the students as they use the messages from these resources to build healthy relationships, positive mental and emotional health.

Following Canada's Food Guide is a fantastic way to get the nutrients you need from a variety of healthy foods. But healthy eating is about more than just the foods you eat. To spread the word, Dietitians of Canada is encouraging everyone to think about how they eat with this year's Nutrition Month theme "More Than Food."

To go beyond food, try being mindful of your eating habits. Mindful eating means taking your time when eating so you can pay attention to what, why and how much you are eating. Paying attention to what you are eating can help you stay in tune with your hunger and fullness cues, which helps you eat the amount of food your body needs. This includes eating when you feel hungry, stopping when you feel full, and enjoying each bite!

Practice Mindful Eating ? Limit distractions, sit down, and eat meals with people you care about. ? Engage your five senses. Think about how different foods look, sound, smell, feel and of course,

taste! ? Check in with yourself. Stop and think about why you are eating. Are you hungry? Bored? Stressed? ? Notice how your body feels and how your hunger changes throughout the meal. Eat until your body

feels satisfied. ? Take your time to eat. It can take your body some time to tell your brain that you're full. Get children and family members involved too! Celebrate this year's theme by including them in meal preparation and planning, eating together, talking about how food tastes and smells, and asking them about how their bodies are feeling before, during and after eating. Check out Canada's food guide for more information about how healthy eating is more than food!
