1836 Hawkins Co. Tax List



Hello to all my fellow Hawkins county researchers. I thought some of you might like a description of the various civil districts of the county, as they are described on the 1836 tax list. I do not know if or when the various boundaries changed over the years.

Civil District 1: Beginning at the top of Clinch mountain at Flat Gap thence with the road by George Wolfe's to John Green's, to the west thence along the path to Duck Creek near Aenas Matthew's old place, thence down the creek to the mouth, thence down Clinch River to the Grainger county line. Election to be held at Wm Walker's. (I do not know what election this refers to).

Civil District 6: Beginning on the north bank of Holston river opposite the mouth of the Laurel Branch below Thomas Morrison's running with the road that leads from said Morrison's to Doctor Walkers to where said road crosses Ellis's branch then up said branch crossing the stage road a little west of said Ellis's house thence up the branch to Campbell Smith's then along the road that leads from said Smith's to the east of Robert Henseley's then with said road to Cooper's mill creek then up said creek to the fork below Cooper's mill then up the west fork of said creek to John Forgey's mill then with the path that leads from Forgey's mill across the Stanley valley Knobs to intersect the Virginia line below Henry Larkin's and Henry Darter's then east with the Virginia line to the north fork then down the north fork to the mouth then across the river Holston and with the Sullivan county line to the top of the river mountain then along the top of said mountain to the head of the Laurel Branch and down said branch crossing the river to the beginning.

Civil District 7: Beginning on the river opposite the mouth of the Laurel Branch then down the river to the mouth of Renfroes Creek then up said creek to the fork then up the west fork to the Carter's valley road between James Amis's and Bartram Galbreaths then up the creek by John Mocks then crossing the Stanley valley knobs with the path between Benoni Coldwells and Walter's and running with the line that divides the land of Coldwell and Walters to the Virginia line and Clinch mountain east of John Deckard then with the Virginia line east to the corner of District No. 6 and with that line to the beginning.

Coldwelll's then up said creek leaving Coldwells house on the east thence following a path leading from the said Coldwells to where William Vernon formerly lived and thence up the Green county line on the top of Bays mountain and then with said county line westwardly to the corner of District No. 14 at Days gap then with the road leaving John West, James Long and John Dodson on the east then running by the two widow Mooneys to Robertsons creek at Aaron Mooneys and thence down said creek to the beginning.
