Description:Students will master fundamental economic concepts, applying the tools (graphs, statistics, equations) from other subject areas to the understanding of operations and institutions of economic systems. Studied in a historic context are the basic economic principles of micro- and macroeconomics, international economics, comparative economic systems, measurement, and methods.?Course OutlineWhat is economics?? ? ? ?vocabulary? ? ? ?economic laws? ? ? ?graphsFinancial literacy Online 10 lessonsHow do economist think & 6 Economic PrinciplesPrinciple number 1: People respond to incentives.Principle number 2: There is no such thing as a free lunch.Principle number 3: No thing is just one thing; there are always at least 2 sides to every interaction.Principle number 4: The law of unanticipated influences.Principle 5: The law of unintended consequences.Principle number 6: No one is, and no one ever can be, in complete control. The Economist’s Tool Kit—3 Core Concepts? ?Rationality? ?Marginal Analysis? ?OptimizationRequired Text and Materials:-Prentice Hall’s?Economics?textbook-Internet Access for economic research and monitoring student progress through class website:? - An account to save research account- Report cover for Life Plan-Non-cell phone calculatorGrading? The course will assess the student’s to ability to progress in the articulation, demonstration and comprehension of course subject matter.?Grading for this course will be:Class work ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?30%????Exams? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?20%Financial Literacy? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 10%Investment Instruction? ? ? ? ? ?10 %Life Plan? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 10%Community Service (12 hours) 10%Attendance 10% (policies described in detail on website)Makeup Work Policy:?Students with excused absences will be provide full credit for assignments missed if submitted 5 working days from the date of return from that excused absence.?Arrangements for makeup work outside of the stated policy?must be requested by the parent/guardian of the student with an acceptable rationale and makeup schedule.?Attendance? This class is a graduation requirement attendance is critical to a student's success in this class and in life. I am very critical of tardies and unexcused absences, they not only impact the student but the entire community in lost financial resources. 40 points will be subtracted from the student's attendance grade for every unexcused absence and 20 points for very tardy. Also, the student's citizenship will be negatively impacted with poor attendance. ?Students with attendance grades of D or below will not be allowed to apply extra credit points or authorized to attend school or field trip opportunities.? If you are receiving an "F" grade in attendance you cannot apply "Greenies" credit to your grade??Rules/Class Etiquette?Make sure identification is clear in all communications.?Begin with a salutation (“Hi, Jason!”) and end with your signature (“Hannah Kay, Economics Per.1”).Review what you wrote and try to interpret it objectively.?When we speak face to face and are misunderstood, we have an on-the-spot opportunity to rephrase our words. In writing, we must strive twice as hard to be understood, as we do not have the benefit of modifying or elaborating in real time. All caps (“I’M SHOUTING”) and exclamation points (“Give me a break!!!”) can be misinterpreted as intense anger or humor without the appropriate context. If you wouldn’t say it face to face, don’t say it online.?When you’re working online, you’re safe behind a screen, but that’s no excuse to be ill-mannered or say things you would never say in public.Don’t assume everyone understands where you’re coming from.?Sarcasm and wit is often the spice of in-person conversation, but in online discussion, it can not only lose its edge, it can bite! In your high school classroom, all students were the same age, came from similar backgrounds and lived in the same area. In contrast, your online classroom is made up of people of all ages and cultures who have varied backgrounds, lifestyles and geographic locations. With this in mind, review what you wrote before contributing to the conversation and ask yourself, “Will?everyone?get the joke?”Don’t spam.?Please don’t take advantage of your connection with the other students in your online classroom to forward emails and links regarding your political/spiritual beliefs or to sell your services.Use emoticons.?In casual chatroom settings, emoticons can help convey feelings that may otherwise get lost in translation, including humor, exasperation, exhaustion and even confusion.Respect others’ privacy.?Don’t give out another student’s personal email address without permission.Remember, if it’s on the internet, it’s everywhere.?Don’t share personal information about yourself in a public online forum, especially something that could put your safety or security at risk.Follow the rules.?Just as your online college posts guidelines related to?academic integrity and student expectations, online forums also have rules of conduct. Make a point to read them every time, as they can vary from class to class.Forgive and forget.?If you’re offended by something another student says online, keep in mind that you may have misunderstood their intentions. Give them the benefit of the doubt.?Economics Major Project Guidelines?Students as individuals/ groups will be assigned projects requiring planning, research, design, production and presentations. These projects promote the practical application of material taught and the application of critical thinking skills, multiple instruction strategies such as library research, use of technology, student communication skills and the experience of working in groups. The projects are:?A personal savings and investment project?A comprehensive Life Plan for evidence of financial literacy?Tutoring Sessions?Holding a student and/or a class for tutoring is an opportunity for a student to improve their performance?by:??Assigning students with unexcused absences and tardies to keep pace with materials they have missedStudents with grades below a “C”?Entire classes whose class averages are below 70% on all or any benchmark examsDisruptive BehaviorIndependent Study?Students will be provided the opportunity to add additional points to their grade through independent study projects that will be offered Mr. Elias.?These projects will consist of assignments that focus on the economics of entrepreneurship.?Independent?Teacher Website course offers both students and parents the opportunity to actively participate in the instruction.??Students will be given a number of sources and exercises to supplement their instruction.??Parents will be provided a valuable tool to review the type of instruction offered their child, monitor their progress and communicate with the instructor through email on any concerns or suggestions they may offer on increasing the quality of their child’s education.??Students will also be alerted through email on critical assignment dates or performance notices.?·? ? ? ? ?A parent or guardian must email their acknowledgement of this syllabus to receive credit(relias@)?
