| |Involving the Business partners in planning/streamlining the system of dry waste collection approaches |

| |Outputs |

| |Extensive data base format and experiment results at ward level (this could be extrapolated at the city level) with input options from AI |

| |implementation |

| |Menu of solutions/options for MSWM using AI in specific ward and city contexts based on geographical characteristics, economic feasibility, |

| |ecological efficiency and socially acceptable based solutions |

| |What does success look like after 12 months of funded research? |

| |Strategies and a full-fledged plan of AI application options for the City and implemented AI in Ward 168 Bengaluru, with experimentation |

| |Strategies and approaches for improve governance of AI application in disposal and treatment in London contexts |

| |How will your solution reach the marketplace? |

| |Given that the study addresses concerns at a micro level and understanding at a macro level, we will document the need gap across the levels |

| |during survey and discussions. Given that the business partners are part of the group, we will pursue ‘waste not as waste but as a misplaced |

| |resource’. |

|12. |What is ‘technological’ about your proposed solution and why |Explore Options HH Collection |

| |might this be appropriate to the challenge areas? |Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tagged. Staff to scan RFID tag through |

| |1000 character limit |scanners |

| | |Routing through smart card |

| | |Linkages with waste collector’s phone |

| | |Secondary data updated onto central server using IoT |

| | |App based interactive interface linked with mobile for raising complaints. |

| | |Bulk generators - bins with sensors indicating level of filled waste connected to |

| | |central server and GPS enabled auto tipper/compactors. |

| | |Data analysis of segregated waste collection programmed with AI. |

| | |Explore options Waste Collection-Tippers/ Compactors |

| | |Waste collector vehicles tracked and monitored using GPS with real time access to |

| | |citizens |

| | |Strategic location route planning real time |

| | |Area identification of transport vehicles using sensors |

| | |Appropriate for addressing challenges |

| | |Real time tracking |

| | |Trip reports no of bins, time of clearance, distance |

| | |AI adaption for efficiency in MSW Governance |

| | |Minimized contact with waste for sanitation workers, complaint reduction, better |

| | |resource planning and decision making. |

| | |Economic feasibility eliminating unnecessary expenses. |

| | |Live data display of waste generated wardwise |

|13. |Is your proposed solution a response to the impacts of |The proposed solution will look an effort towards containment of the pandemic. |

| |COVID-19, or an effort to contain the pandemic? If so, please |The pandemic has proven that the health risks to society at large, people in |

| |explain. |cities, sanitation workers and to people in contact at household level is huge, |

| |1000 character limit |more so in India. Besides, the economic and health costs are immense. It is |

| | |high time we use intelligent solutions to handle the jobs that involves the lower |

| | |rung of employment and avoid occupational hazards. Handling and Managing waste |

| | |will change with the intervention of the AI. This study will work towards |

| | |improving the segregation, collection and transportation efficiency in this study |

| | |at specific locations (Ward 168 in Bangalore, India and in London and experimented|

| | |at the ward level. The next level of disposal and treatment of waste management |

| | |will be discussed at large through a review of case studies and best practices. |

| | |However, the study will aim at exploring the AI solutions given that we have the |

| | |business and NGO partners in the team. Finally, the aim will be to suggest on |

| | |closing the loop of handling waste management effectively through application of |

| | |IoT and AI. |

|14. |Does your proposed solution contribute to combatting climate |SWM and Climate Change are directly linked. GHGs are the most apparent way to |

| |change or promoting a greener planet? If so, please explain. |indicate that the local SWM has a global environmental footprint. Besides, there |

| |1000 character limit |are several other indicators that imply the link between local actions and global |

| | |impacts in the context of improved SWM. GHG effects and their management play a |

| | |crucial role for improved SWM. To ensure that there are more sustainable |

| | |initiatives and less GHG effects, every stage/level of SWM needs attention. Need |

| | |to link between different local practices and technologies to meet local contexts |

| | |will be most important intervention. There is scope to adopt to low-carbon |

| | |technologies to mitigate climate change effects. Studies have indicated risk |

| | |allocation matrix and procurement process design to promte private sector in |

| | |adopting low-carbon technologies and AI by providing guidelines for structuring |

| | |PPP projects in SWM governance which will be explored by experimentation. |

|15. |How is your proposal relevant to the development challenges of|Waste management is a great challenge in majority of urban cities in India. As per|

| |India? |one estimation, by 2030, 40% of Indians will be urban residents. In addition to |

| |1000 character limit |this, there will also be more than 5,000 small urban towns (50,000-100,000 persons|

| | |each) and more than 50,000 developed rural towns (5,000-10,000 persons each) with |

| | |similar income profiles. The figure also indicates the propensity of varied |

| | |challenges that urban India is going to face in the coming years. Among other kind|

| | |of sustainable development challenges, the one that growing urban India will pose |

| | |is a matter of attention of policymakers. Within that waste management of the |

| | |urban space has already raised alarm and any attempt to address the same gain |

| | |additional importance as it is directly linked to almost all SDG of United Nation.|

| | |In this pursuit, there is a need of the hour to focus more towards working |

| | |together with government, business, civil society, and AI for better and |

| | |sustainable tomorrow. |

|16. |What consideration have you made of gender in developing your |Gender disparity in occupational strata is very much evident in India. |

| |concept? Could your project address gender inequality or |Specifically, the highly skilled/semi-skilled jobs are dominated by men and |

| |other kinds of inequality? |unskilled jobs are female centric. The situation is no exception in the case of |

| |1000 character limit |waste management in India in general and Karnataka in particular. In fact, earlier|

| | |studies have shown that the Waste management practices often reinforce gender |

| | |inequalities, however, if key initiatives are taken at appropriate level, they do |

| | |have the potential to enhance equality and women’s empowerment, beside attending |

| | |the other objectives of SDG. In fact, from sustainable point of view, there exists|

| | |differences in the way waste being looked/treated across gender. Given this, the |

| | |present study will address women workers across the segregation, collection and |

| | |transportation levels of SWM. |

| |Notes: |

| |Please be kindly reminded of the primary criteria: relevance to the environmental and/or C19 agenda. See boxes 13 and 14. |

| |Except box 5, all boxes require mandatory response. |

| |In the interests of fairness, proposals that exceed the character limits will not be considered. |
