MON AUG 28th History of the Uses of Native Plants (part II)

Native plants have been used for centuries for many purposes, and a

number of our non-native species were deliberately introduced

because of their usefulness. Learn more about some of the plants

that now grace our roadsides, fields, and woodlands in this

presentation by Amanda Smith, Supt. of Natural Resources &

Education, Hamilton Co. Parks & Recreation.

MON SEP 25th Invasive Plants and other Threats to our

Native Flora and Pollinators

STATE INPAWS “GROW NATIVE” INITIATIVE

~ a retail incentive program that rewards local businesses for selling native plants and not selling invasives!

“The sad reality is that most invasive plant species are horticultural escapes from landscaping.” The sale of such plants in the nursery trade works against healthy ecosystems. By eliminating a diverse mix of native plants, invasives harm pollinators & other wildlife as well as increase erosion & sedimentation in waterways. The “Grow Native” initiative is a free voluntary program that starts the conversation with plant sellers about invasive plants in horticulture. Businesses that sell native plants can be a “Basic” member, while those who agree not to sell invasive plants can become “Invasive-Free” members. Plant shopping? Find participating seller: .

This info is based on Ellen Jacquart’s article in INPAWS JOURNAL (summer 2017). Ellen is Invasive Plant Education leader for INPAWS. For more info contact Ellen: 812-876-9645, invasives@

Local Monarch Conservationist Reni Winter-Evans will teach about the migration, and demonstrate how she and thousands of

other citizen scientists raise monarchs indoors and then tag the migrating generation to help researchers track the fall and spring

migrations. Eggs being laid now will be part of that migration. Help tag and release migrating monarch butterflies. Reni will also

give tips on how to establish monarch reproduction habitat.
