Job description and employee specification templateJob title:Head of CultureLocation: The Wilson Art Gallery and MuseumReports to: Chief Executive Officer Working hours:Up to 40 per week Job number:TBCSalary grade:Grade K ?45,774 -?51,956Manages:Cultural Producers, Creative Producer, Assistant Producer, Learning and Participation Team LeadersPurpose:We are looking for an experienced and creative individual to lead a step change in our public programming offer; someone who can inspire, engage, stimulate and motivate people to visit the trust’s venues and participate in its cultural programme.As a member of the trust’s Executive Management Team this role will lead, advise on and deliver strategic (and operational) cultural activities to ensure that the trust is the lead provider of culture and go to destinations for cultural experience and activities in Cheltenham. This role includes the exciting opportunity to shape The Wilson’s profile when it reopens following its refurbishment.The role will focus on:Developing and implementing a cultural strategy that builds on the trust’s current cultural programme and showcases the heritage and contemporary venues to visitors. The strategy will include a key focus on The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum that is currently undergoing major refurbishment to create a new community art and exhibition gallery, a community arts café and artist studios to ensure that The Wilson when it reopens in spring 2022 increases its visitor numbers and the diversity of visitors and maximises on the opportunities that the Minster redevelopment to the rear of the venue creates.You will be expected to lead and drive forward the cultural strategy and deliver the culture team’s business plan. You will lead the team responsible for collections management including internationally significant Arts and Crafts Movement collection, fine art and Edward Wilson collections and Museum Accreditation process.?You will increase visitor numbers and improve the visitor experience through the programming of exhibitions and redisplay of the collections in the art galleries and museum, as well as other cultural events and activities.You will be commercially aware, recognising sustainability as a result of increased footfall and spend per head that has been developed through working on learning programmes, exhibitions, events, workshops, live programming or digital programming. We are looking for someone with a broad skillset.In this role you will manage a team responsible for the development of the curatorial briefs and production of an Edward Wilson exhibition and the programme of community engagement; particularly with local creatives and national funding bodies.You will develop strong relationships with key stakeholders including the Arts Council and other funding bodies to ensure that the trust attracts funding from all possible sources and moves towards NPO status. Other key stakeholder management will include Cheltenham Borough Council, Cheltenham Festivals and the Friends of The WilsonYou will assist Cheltenham Borough Council as the owner of the collections to develop a solution for storing the town’s historic collectionsKey duties and responsibilities: Responsible for leading and managing the culture team and associates that act in a volunteer role to support the culture strategyRaising the profile of The Wilson and the trust’s culture programme locally, regionally and nationally within arts and culture and the local community and business sectors. Seeking funding opportunities and writing applications for appropriate grant funding to support cultural activities and events Recognising commercial and income generation opportunities and formulating viable P&Ls and business cases for cultural activities, events and exhibitions.Working with the trust’s communications lead to ensure all communication channels are used to promote and engage audiencesPrepare and present reports, as required, for the CEO, Executive Team and the Culture and Communities Committee and Board.Manage approved budgetsUndertake risk management in line with the Trust’s policy.To comply and implement the health, safety and welfare policy and all other Trust policies and procedures.To ensure that the Trust’s equal opportunities policies are followed.
