If you intend to drop the class, it is your own responsibility to file a drop card with the registrar’s office by the drop deadline. I will not sign any drop-petitions unless you have documented proof that you can no longer physically take the class.

(A scientific calculator or graphing calculator is required. However, no programmable graphing calculators, such as TI-89 or TI-92, are allowed.)

Prerequisite:

Math 104 or Math 104E or Math 110 with a grade of C or better, or equivalent. One hour per week concurrent enrollment in the Math Activity Center (MAC.)

Math Activities Center (MAC, Room 1525):

You are required to concurrently enroll in the MAC, and spend a total of 16 hours there during the semester. If you complete less than 16 hours you will earn the same fraction of the MAC grade as the fraction of the 16 hours you complete. A good use of your MAC time would be doing your computer lab (Minitab) assignments, working in a study group on the class material, and/or seeking help from instructors/tutors there.

Classroom Regulations:

Absolutely no noise is tolerated in class except when you are asking me questions or answering my questions or being directed to do group discussions. In particular, no cell phones, beepers or other electronic devices are allowed to operate in class.

You are encouraged to ask me any questions at any time during the class. You are expected to participate actively in classroom activities. Failing to do the latter counts as one absence. Being late to the class for more than five minutes or leaving the class early, without valid reasons, counts as half an absence.

Homework Assignments:

Homework will be assigned daily, and you will be expected to complete it by the beginning of the next class; it will, however, not be collected.

Computer Lab (Minitab) Assignments:

Minitab assignments will be assigned periodically and will be collected on the due dates. Your lowest Minitab score will be dropped.

Quizzes:

Quizzes will be given every Thursday to cover the material from previous classes. No make-up quizzes will be given. Your lowest four quiz scores will be dropped.

My grading is very strict and picky. I do not assign grades based on the correctness of your final answer. Instead, your grade will solely depend on how well you justify each answer by computations and/or explanations, and whether you present it legitimately. If you are unsure what is considered legitimate, follow the work of my examples in class. When you answer a “yes/no” question, or when you are asked to interpret or explain your answers, you need to use complete sentences. If you don’t know what a complete sentence is, take English 1.

Tests:

There will be three 75-minute tests (on Thu, 2/22, Tue, 4/3, Thu, 5/10). In general, no make-up tests will be given. Please plan to take every test as scheduled. If you for any reason miss a test, you will need to talk to me before the next class meeting to discuss possible arrangements.

If your lowest test score is lower than the final exam score, that test score will be replaced by the final exam score.

Final Exam:

A two-hour comprehensive final exam will be given on Tuesday, 5/22, 8-10am. There will be absolutely no make-up for the final.

Total: 100%

You will receive a grade for this course according to the following guideline:

A 90-100% B 80-89%

C 70-79% D 55-69%

F 0-54%

Course Description:

Math 11 is an introduction to elementary probability and statistics, including basic rules of probability, probability distributions, descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, estimation, correlation and regression analysis, and an introduction to analysis of variance.

Academic Regulation:

You are expected to attend classes regularly. If you are absent more than twice during the semester, you may be dropped. If you miss a class, you are solely responsible in finding out what I do in the class and what material I pass out to the class. You can do so by asking either me or a fellow student. Refer to the Solano Community College Catalog for other academic regulations.
