Office Hours: Wednesdays 3:30-4:30pm

Textbook: Elementary Statistics: A Step by Step Approach, by Allan G. Bluman

Prerequisite: MATH 1101 or 2105 or 2221

COURSE TOPICS: An introduction to probability and statistics. Topics include descriptive statistics, sampling, basic probability, the Normal probability distribution, and hypothesis testing.

ATTENDANCE: Attendance will be taken daily. Each student is allowed three unexcused absences without penalty, but beginning with the 4th unexcused absence, one percentage point will be deducted from the overall course grade per absence. If a student misses seven or more total class periods (whether excused or unexcused), the instructor reserves the right to withdraw the student from the course due to the amount of missed material.

Every two late arrivals count as one unexcused absence.

Failure to attend all class meetings may result in the student receiving a grade which is less than he/she is capable of earning, due to missing material presented in the classroom. Additionally, each student is responsible for the missed material in class, whether excused or unexcused.

TESTING AND GRADING:

1. Quizzes will be given throughout the semester. Also, you will be asked to regularly turn in homework assignments. These assignments will be collected at the beginning of class – no late homework assignments will be accepted (even by the end of the class period).

2. Final averages will be computed by the following table:

| |Points |Dates |

|Quiz/Homework |150 | |

|Exam 1 |100 |Monday, March 1 |

|Exam 2 |100 |Monday, March 29 |

|Exam 3 |100 |Monday, May 3 |

|Final Exam |200 |Friday, May 7, 8-11am |

|Total |650 | |

3. I will use the following +/- grading scale:

|A+ |98-100 |B+ |87-89 |C+ |77-79 |D+ |67-69 |

|A |93-97 |B |83-86 |C |73-76 |D |60-66 |

|A- |90-92 |B- |80-82 |C- |70-72 |F |< 60 |

Grades will not necessarily be rounded – i.e., an 89.5 is NOT the same as a 90. Attendance, students’ willingness to seek help, and class participation will all factor into the instructor’s decision of rounding final grades for each student.

MAKE-UP EXAMS: If you miss an exam for an excused reason, a conference with the instructor is necessary to determine an appropriate course of action – the instructor may give a make-up exam (before the regular exam is given), or the final may replace the missed test grade. If you miss a test for an unexcused reason, you will receive a zero for that grade.

HONOR CODE: Students are expected to abide by the LaGrange College Honor Code. All quizzes and tests for this class are to be done without the assistance of books, notes, or other people. However, students are encouraged to study with classmates. On each exam, you will sign your name to a statement indicating that you have neither given nor received any aid on the exam. Failure to do so will not relieve the student from being bound by the Honor Code. Violations will be turned over to the Honor Council for further action as specified in the Student Handbook.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES:

1. Drop/add ends on Friday, February 5, and the last day to withdraw with an automatic ‘W’ is Wednesday, March 17. No withdraws will be given after this point unless there are extreme circumstances.

2. No class during Spring Break (April 5-9) or the inauguration day of the new president (April 16).

3. You are strongly encouraged to ask questions or to come during office hours for help if you do not understand something. Appointments are welcome.

4. I am very reachable by e-mail, and will respond to any questions within a reasonable amount of time. Please do not hesitate to e-mail me with any questions you have throughout the semester.

5. The use of cell phones – even as calculators – is prohibited. If you are caught texting in class, you will be asked to leave.

6. The instructor reserves the right to make changes to the syllabus if necessary.
