The Elements and Principles of Design

The Elements and Principles of Design - All activities will be done in your EN

View and record a brief description of each Element and Principle from the posters at the stations around the room. Then, prepare a visual representation of each element and principle. See examples on my office door. 2 elements and/or principles per page. BE CAREFUL NOT TO GLUE PAGES TOGETHER OR BLEED THROUGH WITH MARKERS!!

I - ELEMENTS OF DESIGN ACTIVITIES

1. Line: Make a chart using at least 3 different tools: a pencil, pen, marker, crayon, colored pencil. Vary the lines to show thick, thin, curved, angular, broken, hatching, diagonal, and parallel. Draw at least 10 lines.

2. Form: Because our EN is flat we will sketch a 2D object and give it form by shading. Sketch an object such as a ball, vase with a flower, a box etc... Choose a light source and add shading to create the illusion of form.

3. Shape: Prepare a collage using geometric and organic shapes from the colored paper provided. You can use a glue stick if you want, or tape. Geometric shapes are figures such as a square, rectangle, circle, etc. Organic shapes do not have a specified shape.

4. Color: Prepare a color wheel using colored pencils. Look at the internet for colors.

5. Value: Prepare a value scale using a colored pencil. You must sketch 5 squares about 4 x 4 grids each. Scale must be ONE color. Dark to light or light to dark!

6. Texture: Make different textures by rubbing a pencil, crayon, or a colored pencil over different objects. This is simulated texture.

7. Space: Cutting out shapes from magazines of people, animals, flowers, buildings etc… of different sizes. Make a collage that indicates space by placing the smaller objects towards the back and overlap the larger images as you work your way towards the bottom of the page.

II - PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN ACTIVITIES

View and record notes on the principles of design from the posters and the PowerPoint from the Poland server. Then, create a visual representation of the 7 principles. Be creative!

2 must be hand drawn

3 must be cut and pasted from colored paper

2 must be printed from online resources

Assignment is due at the end of the period on Thursday. Have fun!
