2016-2017 Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) Agreement

The curricula for the Honors and Advanced Placement courses at Elgin High School are designed to provide students with a rigorous and challenging educational experience. In fact, the AP curriculum allows students to potentially earn college credit while still in high school. Students will work at a pace that exceeds that of the regular education curriculum, and students may be required to complete work prior to the start of the school year. When summer work is required, student can expect to be tested on the work after 10 days of school. Due to the demands placed upon the students in these courses, they will receive a weighted grade on our four point scale if they achieve either an A (5.0) or B (4.0) during each semester. Students enrolled in these courses will receive an enriched education that will better prepare them for the demands of post-secondary education. Students enrolled in AP classes are expected to take the corresponding AP exam when offered in the spring.

It is imperative that all students and parents place serious consideration into the decision to enroll in honors and advanced placement courses. Elgin High School creates its class sections based upon student choice; therefore, if a student drops an AP or Honors course there may not be space available for them at the other levels or in other classes. Once a student has enrolled in an Honors or Advanced Placement course, he/she will not be permitted to drop or change levels without a consequence to their grade until the completion of the first semester. If a student does drop the Honors or AP class completely anytime during the semester (including the first 10 days of school), the student drops the class with an “E”, unless an error was made on the part of EHS in the placement of the student then no grade consequence will occur. If the student is receiving a PE exemption to take any Honors or AP class(es) and Honors or AP class is dropped then the student will be automatically enrolled in PE.
