The Headlines:

• President Kiir heads to Washington to attend the US Africa summit.

• Appointed Chief Administrator for Greater Pibor David Yau Yau to embark on peace.

• AU to assess the impact of the ongoing conflict on children in South Sudan

Investment in South Sudan will dominate President Salva Kiir’s visit to Washington.

The President left for Washington this morning to attend the US Africa summit on the Invitation of US president Barrack Obama.

Ateny Wek Ateny, the President’s Spokesperson on Wednesday confirmed that President Salva Kiir would lead a delegation to market South Sudan to potential investors.

Ateny Wek Ateny: “He will be appealing to those who think that South Sudan is in war and so they can’t come to invest in South Sudan … that everything on the ground is going on well and therefore would like to extend his invitation to them to return to South Sudan – those who were here before and left because of this unnecessary war and those who are willing to come.”

Trade and investment issues are expected to dominate the summit between President Barack Obama and about 50 African leaders.

A day after he was officially appointed Chief Administrator for Greater Pibor Area, David Yau Yau tells Radio Miraya that peace and stability remain a key priority for his administration.

David Yau Yau says a team will travel to Greater Pibor soon to raise awareness about peace.

David Yau Yau: “We are going to go down and preach over to the locals that this is time for peace and we need to stay in harmony with the neighbouring communities and we can move from there to the other just as simple as that. The top priority that we are going to handle is to stabilize the insecurity within the administrative area and that will be disseminated along our neigbouring community that will allow us to move to the next phase which is the developmental part.”

On Wednesday President Salva Kiir Mayardit appointed the Leader of South Sudan Democratic Movement Cobra Faction David Yau Yau as the Chief Administrative for Greater Pibor Area.

The Presidential decree read on South Sudan Radio also names seven counties for Greater Pibor Administrative Area.

The seven counties are Pibor, Pochala North, Pochala South, Boma, Likwangole, Pertet and Gumuruk.

The African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) will next week conduct an assessment of the situation of children affected by the country's ongoing conflict.

The committee will assess the impact of armed conflict and decide on resource gaps for prevention and response for the children affected by the conflict.

A press statement issued by the African Union states this assessment is intended to advocate for improved protection and response to children affected by the armed conflict in South Sudan.

The visit expected between 3 and 9 August is part of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child mandate to promote and protect the rights of children.

Jonglei State Governor, John Kong Nyuon has reiterated calls for peace and support for war widows and orphans.

Addressing citizens who turned up for the Martyrs day celebrations in Boma yesterday, Governor Kong advised the citizens to shun tribalism and instead unite for peace.

John Kong Nyuon: “I take this opportunity to appeal top our national government to continue and double its efforts in supporting these groups in these hard times. I call upon our youths in Jonglei state in towns, rural areas, or in the diaspora to shun tribalism, stereotyping and embrace peace and reconciliation for greater prosperity.”

Internally displaced women taking shelter at the UNMISS protection of civilian site in Jonglei state say they don’t feel safe and secure to move to the markets.

The women revealed this during a dialogue with the UNMISS state coordinator for Jonglei State, Hazel De Wet.

The state coordinator explains what the women told him.

Hazel De Wet: “The women were saying that they wanted to go to the market in Bor and thus far they have not been feeling safe and secure to move out of the POC site, so I think there is definitely movement and there is room and UNDP is currently here on a second visit bringing different communities together in Bor around the issue of peace and reconciliation.”

Latest reports indicate a total of 22 suspected cholera cases including seven deaths have been reported in Ikotos County.

A cholera treatment shelter has been established to treat cases by the local population.

The latest cholera situation report issued by WHO says the Boma Chief has contacted Isohe Mission hospital team to provide medical care, hygiene promotion, case identification and case referral to the Cholera Treatment Center in the hospital.

In a related development a team from the Health Ministry and MSF Belgium is expected in Boma and Mewun later today to assess the situation.

In foreign news, the government of Liberia has announced that it is closing down all schools across the country to stop the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.

The BBC quotes Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf saying some communities would be placed under quarantine as well, said.

Non-essential government workers have been asked to go home for 20 days and the army has been deployed to enforce the measures.

Latest figures from the United Nations have put the death toll from Ebola at 672.

In sports, Mukongo United Football club won the Martyrs Day tournament trophy, for the first time in the club’s existence.

Mukongo emerged victors yesterday after beating Taharir FC by two goals to one.

Hundreds of spectators including the State Minister of Youth and Sports watched what has been described as a fascinating match played yesterday at Yambio Freedom Square.
