FIRST HOLY COMMUNICANTS: Please welcome children from St Joseph’s Withnell who will make their First Holy Communion with us, while their church is still closed due to H&S reasons.

Many congratulations to our Yr 5 children who have made their First Holy Communion in recent weekends. 29 children and their families received the most precious gift of The Lord Himself. Each child received a beautiful certificate and Cross on Monday 12th October at a tea party in the school. The cohort also had a group photograph taken. I think the children really enjoyed their tea party. Thank you to Mr Smyth our Headteacher and all the school staff for everything that you do.

OCTOBER IS THE MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY: Please pray the rosary in your homes, at work or in the church. We ask Our Blessed Lady to protect our parish and priest, our school with the children and staff. We pray for our housebound, the sick and those who care for them in hospitals, care and nursing homes and hospices.

KNITTED HEARTS: We have been asked for more knitted hearts as the patient numbers with COVID – 19 related illnesses and other illnesses rise in the local hospitals. As you know, we ask that you knit the hearts in pairs so one is kept by the poorly patient and one is given to the family. These hearts are very much appreciated and those of you who knit these hearts are doing a great work of mercy and in a sense you are being the good Samaritan by your kindness and generosity of your time. Thank you so much.

XXIX SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

18th OCTOBER 2020

The Pharisees went away to work out between them how to trap Jesus in what he said. And they sent their disciples to him, together with the Herodians, to say, ‘Master, we know that you are an honest man and teach the way of God in an honest way, and that you are not afraid of anyone, because a man’s rank means nothing to you. Tell us your opinion, then. Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?’ But Jesus was aware of their malice and replied, ‘You hypocrites! Why do you set this trap for me? Let me see the money you pay the tax with.’ They handed him a denarius, and he said, ‘Whose head is this? Whose name?’ ‘Caesar’s’ they replied. He then said to them, ‘Very well, give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar – and to God what belongs to God.’ Matthew 22:15-21

Originally this was to be the weekend of our Synod 2020 event, but the COVID-19 pandemic means this will now take place in June 2021. We will hear from our parish Synod Representatives during the Sunday Masses over this weekend.

The summary proposals on the four Synod Themes will be published which you will find on the Synod Website. Over the coming weeks our local Synod Members will be inviting your responses to these proposals as we continue to discern the Church God is calling us to be. Please visit the website, read the summary proposals, and prayerfully reflect on them. synod2020.co.uk

LANCASHIRE IS IN TIER 3 STATUS. Chorley has seen a 30% increase of reported COVID cases since last week. Those of you who are in advanced age, have a longstanding illness or are receiving cancer treatments and who wish to stay at home and shield during the next few weeks, would be wise to do so. Sunday Mass attendance is still not compulsory. You may wish to come to Mass during the week when we do not have high numbers for attendance. Keep safe.

WRAP UP WARM: It is much colder in recent days. Please wrap up warm for church. The doors must remain open to provide the necessary ventilation requirement during the pandemic.

PLEASE MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING OF 2 METERS

HANDS - FACE - SPACE

Health and Safety warning: It is most important that you do not gather outside the church for chats. Do not put yourselves at risk of COVID infection.

Please remember to sanitize your shopping trollies, baskets and petrol pumps.

QUOTATIONS OF ST JOHN PAUL II

The future starts today, not tomorrow.

Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought.

Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song.

Science can purify religion from error and superstition. Religion can purify science from idolatry and false absolutes.

Social justice cannot be attained by violence. Violence kills what it intends to create.

I have a sweet tooth for song and music. This is my Polish sin.

Stupidity is also a gift of God, but one mustn't misuse it.

Love is never defeated, and I could add, the history of Ireland proves it.

As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the whole world in which we live.

Do not be afraid. God is with us all.
