HSA- GarlandLesson PlanUnit: 3.8A WeatherDate: 1/4/16 – 1/15/16TEKS: 3.8A Observe, measure, record, and compare day-to-day weather changes that include air temperature, wind direction, and precipitation.ELPS: 1A, 1E , 2C,3DE Lesson Objectives:I can- observe, measure, record, and compare day-to-day weather changes in different locations at the same time that include air temperature, wind direction, and precipitation.Lesson Structure:Time45 min. X 2Building Background KnowledgeDifferentiation (ESL, GT, Sped)Materials:Printed MaterialEngage student handout PDF (per student)Station cards PDF (per class)ReusableThermometers (per student)2 rain gauges (per class)Graduated cylinder (per class)Tape (per class)Straws (per student)Scissors (per class)Goggles (per student)Timer (per class)ConsumableWater (per class) Crepe paper, 6-inch strip (per student)PreparationSet up 2 of each station:(2) Station 1 Thermometers(2) Station 2 Rain Gauges(2) Station 3 Wind SocksCut 6-inch strips of crepe paper for each student (for Wind Sock Station)Print station cards.Print student handout. When working with liquids, students should wear safety goggles.Engage: Students will be introduced to the weather stations used in the lesson.(3 minutes per station inside and outside.)Station 1 Thermometers 1. Students read student instruction page.2. Each student gets a thermometer3. Students measure the temperature of the air. Record results. 4. Students measure the temperature of their hand. Record results.5. Students measure the temperature of a cup of ice water. Record results.Station 2 Rain Gauges1. Students read student instruction page. 2. Students discuss what they notice about the rain gauge. What is it measuring in? What number is at the bottom? What number is at the top?3. Have students take turns slowly pouring in water and reading the water levels.Station 3 Wind Sock1. Students read student instruction page.2. Each student gets a straw, a piece of crepe paper, and a piece of tape.3. Students construct their wind sock by attaching the crepe paper to the end of their straw with the tape.4. Using the chart on your table (showing wind speeds), practice using your breath to make your wind sock resemble each level. As a class, go outside and use the tools to collect weather information about the day.ELPS StrategySentence STEMsBeginner/Intermediate:A thermometer measures _______.A windsock measures ____.A rain gauge measures _______.Advanced/Advanced High:They may use the same sentence stems as above to practice if needed.A thermometer measures _______and it is important because ____.A windsock measures ____and it is important because ____.A rain gauge measures ____and it is important _______.Lead students to understanding with the following questions:What is something new or interesting you noticed/learned at the stations? What science tool is used to measure temperature? What science tool is used to measure wind direction? What science tool is used to collect and measure precipitation? What is the science of weather called?Time45 min. X 4Main Content (Modeling)Differentiation (ESL, GT, Sped)Explain: STEMScopediaStudents will read over STEMScopedia to gather more information about weather. Students will use their reading strategies to define vocabulary and summarize the reading in their notebooks.Vocabulary: rain gauge, wind sock, thermometer, weather, precipitation. Explore: Students will observe and record temperature, rainfall, and wind patterns of their area and compare it to the weather in other locations. See Student Guide and Student Journal handouts.Pull lower level readers to read along with teacher.Draw clouds around vocabulary words on master copy to help students find and define.Provide a graphic organizer to help students summarize.Time45 min. X 2Conclusion ( Re-Teach)Differentiation (ESL, GT, Sped)Elaborate: Reading Science “ To Surf or Not to Surf”Evaluate: TEKS aligned multiple choice testExtended time for assignment completion.Oral administration of test.Resources: STEMScopes onlineHigher Order Questions: What observations and comparisons can we make about day to day weather conditions? What tools can we use to gather weather information? How can we record weather data?Assesssment: Completion/Effort in Interactive Science Notebook, Reading Science Homework, TEKS aligned multiple choice testKey Concepts: 1. Weather conditions can vary and change from day to day.2. We can use tools such as rain gauges, wind socks, and thermometers to gather weather information.3. We can use charts, tables, and graphs for recording and comparing weather data. ................
